Team:#25 Lamar AD: Chas in Cinti Head Coach: Denis Sterner (8 Rec, 18 Sct, 96 Off, 78 Def) Recruiter: John Thoma (32 Rec) Scout: Rudolph Schrader (33 Sct) Assistant: Alex Ramirez (22 Off, 38 Def) Team Budget: $215,960 AD Expectations: Play in the NCAA tournament. Key Returning Players: PG Chad Thielen, SG Matthew Swett, SG Chris Albers, PF Charles Kelly, PF Engel Bauer, SF Stephen Sifuentes Key Incoming Players: PG James Olson, SG Phil Baum, SF Andrew Messinger Prestige: 19 (+5) Outlook:Last season was good, but had to be considered a disappointment after acquiring a 2nd skill. However, there's every reason to think they're ready for a major breakthrough this season. They return all 5 starters and several backups from last year's squad. They also had by far the best FOFC recruiting class, with SG Phil Baum someone to watch. Because of this, they open the season as the #25 ranked team in the country. Code:

Team: Prairie View A&M AD: rjolley Head Coach: Lamar Tetrault (65 Rec, 42 Sct, 47 Off, 26 Def) Recruiter: Michael Levinson (33 Rec) Scout: Norbert Starkey (33 Sct) Assistant: Chris Soto (32 Off, 29 Def) Team Budget: 163, 312 AD Expectations: Finish with at least a .500 conference record Key Returning Players: PG Neal Williams, PG Rolland Donne, C Ronald Graybill, PG Gil Reichard Key Incoming Players: C Gerald Martinez Prestige: 7 (+5) Outlook: The Panthers improve all of their key players in last year's improved squad. That's the good sign. The bad is that they had a terrible recruiting season and only add Martinez, who does play solid defense, but not much else. My guess is a similar, maybe slightly better, result as last season. Code:

Definitely a better start than last season and it's Merle Tibbets leading the way with a terrific beginning to the season (20.1 ppg). William Pace has returned in time for conference play. Code:

Ducourouble continues to excel (17.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg) and Markus has filled in nicely for former star player Jones. The extra rebounding is evident immediately, but the Owls are only 7-6 because of their defense, which gives up 75.8 ppg. Code:

A team that may have finally turned the corner. Look no further than their massive upset win over then #7 Duke. The offense has been much better so far. If they continue this trend, they should roll through the conference, but a loss at the end of the month to Gardner Webb is concerning. Code:

The team I expected to excel this season is having a solid start. The three losses have cost them their top 25 ranking, but they are still #13 in the mid-major top 25. They opened conference play with two nice wins. Code:

Another slow start for the Panthers, but they do open conference play with a win. Graybill, Williams, and Doane all have more than 12 ppg. Code:

Merle Tibbets continue to play great and William Pace returns to his former self to lead Hartford to one of the best offenses in the nation at 77.8 ppg. Unfortunately, their defense is horrendous, giving up 80.5 ppg. This leads to very inconsistent and streaky play. They do manage two close games at the end of the month to secure an above .500 conference record for the first time. Code:

The Owls rolled through conference play behind the efforts of Markus, Ducourouble, and Sims. Their only conference loss this season is a game where they took 20 more shots than their opponent, but just couldn't get them to go down. Again, a weak schedule means they will not make the NCAA tourney unless they get the automatic bid from the conference tourney. Code:

I wish I had better news to report for the Vikings. Unfortunately, they took a step back this season and next season doesn't look much better. They'll lose 2 of their 3 best players and have no good young players to fill in, unless there's a randomly great recruiting class coming in. Code:

The Bucs hit a low point in mid-January loss at Longwood, which dropped them to 3-5 in the conference. However, the team that beat Duke finally starts showing up again and they finish the regular season with 9 wins in 11 games. They are averaging 8 points more per game than last season, which is making a huge difference. Code:

Opening up as the #25 team in the country, Lamar hasn't quite played up to that potential, but they've had a solid season behind a deep bench. Adjusted for 30 minutes, they have 9 guys averaging double digit points. This shows promise for the future. Lamar is on the bubble for the tourney, but towards the bottom of the bubble, so will probably need an automatic bid to make the NCAA tourney. Code:

Another team that took a step back this season. The Panthers were 11-7 in conference play last year, but suffered a lack of depth due to a terrible recruiting class. Code:

1st Round: (3) Hartford vs. (6) New Hampshire A double double by Douglas Hudson leads the Hawks back from a 5 pt halftime deficit into a fairly easy 2nd half win. UNH was held to .339 shooting. Code:
Semifinals: (3) Hartford vs. (7) Stony Brook Hartford gets lucky in facing the #7 seed in the 2nd round, but can't take advantage of it due to very poor defensive play. They make Stony Brook's PG Kenneth Markus look like a star with 27 points. Stony Brook also went to the line 40 times to Hartford's 10. Code:

(1) Kennesaw State vs. (8) USC Upstate The Owls cruise behind 28 pts from Ducourouble. They are going to miss him next year. Code:
Semifinals: (1) Kennesaw State vs. (5) Stetson The only team to beat Kennesaw State in conference this season and they play them tough once again. Ducourouble (2 pts!) and Sims are limited due to foul trouble and it is tied 45-45 with 13 minutes left. However, the Owls get a lift from PF Ronald Bowen, who hit 5 3 pointers to key a 43-19 run the rest of the way. Code:
Conference Championship: (1) Kennesaw State vs. (3) North Florida A huge rebounding edge and some surprising defensive play (limiting UNF to .381 from the field) helped the Owls overcome some sloppy offensive play. Kennesaw State wins another conference title and is headed back to the dance! Code:

2nd Round: (4) Charleston Southern vs. (5) Winthrop The Bucs race to a 17 point halftime lead and never look back. Gooch and Trueblood lead the way by combining for 29 points. Code:
Semifinals: (4) Charleston Southern vs. (1) Radford The Bucs shoot .524 from the field (including 10-16 from range) and force 26 turnovers as they once again build a big early lead and coast to victory. Looking very impressive in beating the #1 seed. Code:
Conference Championship: (4) Charleston Southern vs. (6) UNC Asheville Overcoming a terrible night from the free throw line, the Bucs defense forces 25 turnovers, making it hard for UNC Asheville to mount any kind of 2nd half comeback. The Bucs run away with this one and take the conference championship with a dominating series of performances. They are heading to the dance! Code:

Semifinals: (1) Lamar vs. (5) Sam Houston State Sam Houston State just can't keep up with Lamar's quickness. Thielen's 20 pts help lead Lamar to a 22 pt halftime lead and there was no looking back. Code:
Conference Championship: (1) Lamar vs. (2) Northwestern State Lamar has a miserable shooting night, both from the field (.383) and from the FT line (.538). Northwestern State takes advantage to build a 37-22 halftime lead. Lamar is able to make it a 6 pt game with 9:10 remaining, but can't score on three straight possessions. Northwestern State ends the drought with a backbreaking 3 pointer and runs away with it. Code:

1st Round: (7) Prairie View A&M vs. (10) Alabama A&M The Panthers were down by 7 at the half, but PG Neal Williams hit 5 3-pointers to help lead a great comeback. Prairie View played solid defense, holding their opponents to .354 from the field. Code:
2nd Round: (7) Prairie View A&M vs. (2) Grambling State Neal Williams hits 5 3 pointers for the 2nd consecutive game and the Panthers D is once again solid as they just absolutely destroy Grambling State. Without a doubt, the best win yet for Prairie View. Code:
Semifinals: (7) Prairie View A&M vs. (6) Southern Ronald Graybill has a huge game in this one, with 17 pts and 13 rebounds. The Panthers lead most of the way, but Southern fights back. 1st Round: (13) Kennesaw State vs. (4) Mississippi Ole Miss used a high pressure defense to take an early lead and withstand an early 2nd half rally by the Owls. Kennesaw State's lack of quality big men was apparent here, as Ryall and Tippett combined for only 2 pts. Code:

The most amazing stat of this game is that Lamar went to the line 53 times. 5 different Cal players fouled out of the game. Team: Kennesaw State AD: law90026 Head Coach: Jefferson Mizell (7 Rec, 18 Sct, 80 Off, 95 Def) Recruiter: Andrea Baker (39 Rec) Scout: Noe Wardlaw (32 Sct) Assistant: Carmelo Cusick (38 Off, 41 Def) Team Budget: $223,408 AD Expectations: Play in the NCAA Tournament Key Returning Players: SF Joe Sims, SG Erick Greenwald, PG Brian McCaslin, C Arthur Ryall Key Incoming Players: SF Woodrow Mulcahy, PG Kelvin Bradbury Prestige: 24 (+8) Outlook: The Owls had another great season with their 2nd NCAA tourney berth, but they also lost a ton of talent in Ducourouble and Markus, both of whom averaged more than 16 ppg last season. It'll be up to 4 year starter Sims and Sophomore Greenwald to fill the gap. The Owls also lost their entire coaching staff, as Charles Sandy departed for St. Joseph's. New coach Mizell is a terrible recruiter, but a terrific gameday coach. Code:

Team: Portland State AD: Young Drachma Head Coach: Hilton Starks (21 Rec, 40 Sct, 68 Off, 51 Def) - Job is in jeopardy Recruiter: Barton Kerrigan (33 Rec) Scout: Chris Burris (33 Sct) Assistant: James Manchester (27 Off, 34 Def) Team Budget: $160,000 AD Expectations: Finish with at least a .500 conference record (Board is getting impatient) Key Returning Players:PG Antione Mauney Key Incoming Players: C Jonathan Wilson, SF Brian Ammerman, SG Andrew Crook (JUCO), SG Terrence Todd Prestige: 4 (+0) Outlook: Portland State had a terrible season and lost their best player. They desperately needed a good recruiting class. And it looks like they got it. The 4 newcomers should be able to contribute right away. Hilton Starks is on the chopping block and will almost certainly be fired if they don't hit .500 in conference. Code:

Team: Charleston Southern AD: Breeze Head Coach: Richard Blakeny (100 Rec, 21 Sct, 37 Off, 22 Def) Recruiter: Rod Berry (33 Rec) Scout: Thomas Cruz (34 Sct) Assistant: Willard Sabo (33 Off, 28 Def) Team Budget: $180,375 AD Expectations: Finish with at least a .500 conference record. Key Returning Players: PF Walker Tuggle, PG Alphonse Hayes, SF Karl Mertz Key Incoming Players: PG Kenneth White Prestige: 14 (+10) Outlook: The Bucs had a dream season and look to build on that. They did lose their best player in PG Scott Gooch and their only new addition is a walk-on, but the addition of Post Defense will make them an even more formidable defensive presence. I just wouldn't want to actually watch any of their games. Code:

Team:#6 Lamar AD: Chas in Cinti Head Coach: Denis Sterner (9 Rec, 21 Sct, 100 Off, 90 Def) Recruiter: John Thoma (39 Rec) Scout: Rudolph Schrader (40 Sct) Assistant: Alex Ramirez (26 Off, 46 Def) Team Budget: $233,246 AD Expectations: Win the conference championship. Key Returning Players: PG Chad Thielen, SG Phil Baum, SG Matthew Swett, SG Chris Albers, PF Engel Bauer, SF Stephen Sifuentes Key Incoming Players: PG Barry Borg, C Andrew Goldsberry, SF Nazario Andres, PF Odis Phelan Prestige: 26 (+7) Outlook: Lamar narrowly missed the NCAA tourney last season, but made the most of it by winning the NIT. They return almost everyone from last year's squad, plus add a group of solid Freshmen, so good that I'm not even sure yet who will be picked as the starting 5. They begin the year as the #6 team in the country and are primed to be the 1st team to win a tourney game. But they have to play up to their potential, which they failed to do last year. Code:

Team: Prairie View A&M AD: rjolley Head Coach: Lamar Tetrault (65 Rec, 42 Sct, 47 Off, 26 Def) Recruiter: Michael Levinson (33 Rec) Scout: Norbert Starkey (33 Sct) Assistant: Chris Soto (32 Off, 29 Def) Team Budget: 165,760 AD Expectations: Finish with at least a .500 conference record Key Returning Players: PG Neal Williams, PG Rolland Donne, C Ronald Graybill, PG Gil Reichard Key Incoming Players: PG Jeffrey Keith, SG Rodrick Wray, SF Herman Freitas Prestige: 7 (+5) Outlook: The Panthers made a nice run in the conference tourney last season and return all 5 starters from that squad. They grabbed a few decent young players, but have a noticeable hole at PF. Code:

The Hawks have played inconsistently so far, but they did end December on a 4 game winning streak, including their 1st two conference games. Merle Tibbets is having another great season with 17.8ppg Code:

The Owls definitely miss the presence of Ducourouble and Markus, but the young guys have played well and they don't have any particularly bad losses yet. They should still clean up in conference play. Code:

So far in this dynasty, the Vikings have failed to win more than 1 game before January. Starks should be polishing his resume. Code:

Despite the rather odd loss to UNC Wilmington to begin the year, the addition of Post Defense has paid off for the Bucs. They are allowing an insanely low 42 ppg and the offense is doing just enough to get by. Code:
