FOFC - Manager Update
I continue to read and discover that my assumptions on starting pitchers was correct, Maddux tonight and Martinez tomorrow. Of course the Late 20s could change that, they have other arms they can go to like Smoltz, Eckersly, and Glavine, but I'm guessing they stick with their guns. What to do about tonight's game? I need to check with Howser to see how Treacy did at third during infield practice, I missed that yesterday. I was on a conference call with the team owner. |

FOFC - Manager Update
I arrrive at the ballpark, head into my office. On my way, I stick my head into Howser's office and say, "Dick, come by my office in a minute, I got something to ask you." "I'll be by in 5 minues." "That'd be great, it'll give me time to dress out." I head to my office and start putting on my uniform. I'm almost completely dressed out when Howser walks in. "What's up Benton?" he asks. As I tie my shoes I say, "I asked Treacy to take balls at third last night, how'd he do?" Howser rolls his eyes, "Well he survived." "That good?" I ask as I begin looking around for my hat. "It wasn't pretty. I don't think he fielded anything cleanly. He's probably pretty black and blue this morning." "So playing him at third isn't a good idea?" "I wouldnt' recommend it unless we have the plague or something and he's all you got left." I look up from my search and give him a quizical look. "OK he's better than that, but as long as Palmer and Fouts are healthy, even if they aren't hitting you have to play one of them. If you put Treacy over their he could kill us defensively." I nod, "That's what I wanted to know. I'm sorry to hear that, that would have given me a spot where Treacy could have stolen some at bats." Still looking around, "Have you seen my hat?" "I saw one on the table outside your office, did you leave it there last night?" "I thought I left it on my desk," I say as I head that way. I look at the hat and sure enough it's mine. I put it on and say, "So who should we play at 3rd tonight?" "I don't know. It's pretty much a toss up." I start scratching my head, "I was thinking of giving Palmer another start, but Fouts can bat left against the right handed pitcher...." I stop talking. Howser looks at me funny. "You ok," he querries? I take my hat off, and smell the inside of it, I rub my head and feel a slighty greasy substance. "I think I know why my hat was out here.," I say as I quickly duck back into my office and head for my private bathroom. Howser walks behind me starting to laugh, guessing at what just transpired. As he walks through my office door, he looks back down into the lockerroom and sees several relief pitchers high-fiving and laughing. He walks into the bathroom and sees me attempting to wash my forehead off with soap. "Got something in your hat?" he asks with a huge smirk. "Guess some of the guys are bored." I laugh, "I guess so, now get out, My head is on fire and I'm going to have to get in a shower to get all this mess off." Last edited by Breeze : 10-28-2005 at 12:03 PM. |

I arrived at the park early today just to take some extra BP. I think my swing feels really good right now, but as I peak at the lineup card I notice I'm on the bench again. I really don't mind all that much since we are winning. I think I need to go buy some more seat cushions since the splinters on the bench can be a pain to remove from my ass.

Wow, a ton of webgems to help me through the game. Thanks.
On the other hand, too many hits and too many walks for Mighty to be satisfied. May need to an off day stint on the side with the pitching coach to tune it up a bit, skip.

Nice continued surge to start the season boys.
8-0 in one run ball games shows we're doing the little things right to come out on top. Course, 8 one run games in the first 13 games of the season means we should start trying to win by more or our beloved skipper might not make it to the All-Star break |

FOFC - MANAGER UPDATE
I wake up and pack my suitcase. We are heading on the road for our first road trip. It's only a short one, but it will be interesting to see how we perform away from our comfort zone. This schedule is ridiculous, starting out with a 14 game home stand. I think we pay for it in July, where we are away from home almost the entire month (will need to pack extra underwear for that trip). I head to the stadium and I'm one of the first ones there. I load my bags in the team bus and get on board. I start reading a book that I brought along for the trip. Half way through the second chapter, Sal flops down next to me. "Hey Skip," he starts off. "Lou Scribe pulled me aside last night after the game. He would like to do a piece on our teams fast start and great pitching." "OK," I respond. "You supposed to handle it?" "I already gave him some information, but he wants some comments from you." "So when am I supposed to speak with him?" "He says he'll grab you while we are on the road." "Odds are we'll stink it up while we are out here and all the works he's done so far will become irrelavent." I smirk. Sal laughs, then he gets up and heads to his seat. "Hey Sal," I get his attention once more, "You and your guys are doing a fantastic job." "Thanks, but it's easy to do when you have tallent to work with. What's the old saying, You're only as good as your tools." He smiles. Last edited by Breeze : 11-01-2005 at 07:11 AM. |

FOFC - Manager Update
I've already gotten so accustomed to my morning routine that I failed to notice the cover story on the Sports page today. I didn't notice it dealt with my team until I closed it after reading the synopsis of last nights games. I look at the picture on the cover. It's a great shot of Babson throwing a pitch with Maglie in the backgroun on the top step of the dug out watching. There are inset pictures of Mighty and Nielsen as well. |

SPORTS Blistering by Lou Scribe The late Spring sunshine has been hot, and there are several red, sunburned faces around the Dynasty League lockerrooms to prove it. However, nothing is as hot as the FOFC All Stars and more specifically their pitching. The FOFC All Stars, proved durning the spring with a 12 and 8 record that they would be able to compete with the games greatest players ever, but there were still some reservations from the fans, players, and even the manager. "I feel like our pitching is good enough to let us compete, but Spring training is just that - training. The stats we accumulated are thrown out and we start from scratch. We'll have to see how we do when the lights come on." Manager Benton Breeze commented at his press conference following the last Spring game. So far (with the lights on) so good. How's a 14 and 1 record sound? Pretty good right? Well that's only part of the story, and it doesn't truly capture the teams dominating pitching. If I were to tell you that the FOFCers have a team batting average of .269, which places them in the middle of the pack, have 15 home runs which is also middle of the pack, and have managed to score only 62 runs, the only teams that have scored less are the 6 and 9 Caribbeans, the 4 and 9 Post- Americans, and the 3 and 11 Japanese teams, you would probably guess the All Stars are around a .500 team. Let's get a little more specific about the teams offense...Pflaggstettler is the only full time player hitting over .300, but he is way over that number currently sitting at .453. The Catcher platoon of Bullock and Hays are hitting a combine .333 with Bullock getting the most at bats so far and carrying an impressive .375 average. The rest of the regulars are under .300 and Gunner who isn't even a full-time starter leads the team in home runs with 3. To give you a bit of comparison, Jimmy Foxx leads the league in homeruns with 9 and it takes 5 to get on the short list leaderboard. Pflaggstettlers 12 RBI lead the team, but that won't put him on the list of league leaders either. Despite the rather vanilla offensive statistics the team has a 2.5 game lead in the National League. How is that possible you ask? ...it's the pitching stupid. "We've really done well pitching," says team pitching coach Sal Maglie. "Coming into the season we really preached to our guys to pitch to spots, but to challenge hitters. We knew free passes would kill us. In this league you can't be giving teams baserunners, and so far so good." The FOFCers have only issued 40 walks, second lowest in the league to the Old Timers. With the low number of walks and the great pitching the FOFCers are only allowing just over 1 baserunner an inning. The teams ERA is 2.43, almost an entire run better than the next closest team the Pre-Nationals who are at 3.35. The biggest reason the All Stars have a low ERA - try the top 3 pitchers in the rotation - Babson, Nielsen and Mighty. All 3 are in the top 7 lowest ERAs in all of baseball. The league leader is Cannonball Dick Redding at 1.44, but Mighty is second (1.57), Nielsen is 4th (1.85) and Babson is 7th (2.03). The two right handers at the end of the games Kronside and Sammy Knowles have combined to go 14 scoreless innings, striking out 14 and walking only 4. "We've been doing so good that pitchers like Rodney and Fozborg are getting very little work, and these guys are good enough to start for team in this league," Maglie points out. "Our 5th starter is 2 and 0 with a 3.21 ERA and he's goine 7 innings in both games. Not bad." All that is great, but it still doesn't give you the full affect of how dominating the FOFC pitchers have been. Let's try throwing out a few more numbers - 9 and 0 in 1 run games 1 and 0 in extra innings In the 15 games played - 7 times they have held opponents to 0 or 1 run. In 9 of the 15 games opponents have been held to 2 or less. Now is the pitching coach Maglie smiling - absolutlely. "We have a 2.43 ERA and that is awesome in any league, but we've done it against hitters with last names of Ruth, Gehrig, Gibson, Charleston, DiMaggio, Cobb, Speaker...I could go on and on and on. I'm extremely proud of my staff." What about the Manager Benton Breeze - "We've pitched well and gotten timely hitting, and I'm thrilled by our 14 and 1 start, but the numbers as impressive as they appear are hidding some very unsettling facts." Benton explains, "We are 9 and 0 in 1 runs games, that means we are 1 bad pitch, or misplayed ball away from losing those games. We've played 14 of our 15 games at home, and that is a huge advantage. Our park isn't as cavernous as the Dead Ballers, Old Timers or the Centurions, but it's designed to help our pitchers, and they've benefitted from that. We have also benefited from being healthy this season. Have you seen some of the names on the Injury Report. Wow." And of course we get his typical response for this time of year... "It's early and there is a bunch of baseball still to be played. I just hope we can continue to play this way." Last edited by Breeze : 11-02-2005 at 09:29 AM. |

Obviously I was upset by the media not touting me enough. Those kind of distractions can be killer.

FOFC - TEAM UPDATE
Heading back into the dugout I mumble in a joking manner, "Damn writers jinxing our pitchers." Howser got the joke and smirked, but Sal took me seriously, "At least we still won." "No thanks to your "Blistering" pitchers," chirps Bob Hazzle. "Well it's about time your players starting pulling their weight," Sal barks back. Howser cuts in before I can to calm things, "Now, now, we need to stop speaking to each other this way or we'll scare the children." After a pause he continues, "We won, that's all that matters. Sal that won't be the last time your pitchers have a bad outing, and Bob, get over the article. It was well written and timely. Problem with those types of articles is the streaks come to an end. We'll have to see if our ended tonight." I cut in and change the subject, "Any idea how Gazelle is doing?" "No, I don't think it's serious though. Probably a strained hamstring. Tay is checking him out, but we probably won't know anything for sure until tomorrow." |

FOFC - Manager Update
I woke up feeling lousy the day after our back and forth battle with the Ones, so I turned off the alarm and slept most of the day. I got out of bed just in time to catch the team bus to the park. Once at the park, I retreated to the closet called the Visiting Manager's Office, where I dozed on and off. I felt so bad, I didn't even bother to pick up the paper and read the results of other games. I was finally awaken by Dick Hoswer saying, "Ben...you need to get up, it's time to exchange lineup cards." |

The official scorer rules a single Gibson drives one into right Persimmon Pflaggstettler sprints over to make the play That's one away It's a rainbow shot toward center Tucker reaches up Makes the catch! Didn't have to move an inch Two away now for Negro League I They're ahead by 4 The Ones have 9 hits on the evening Charleston takes his lead The runner unable to take a big lead Knowles keeps looking him back Swung on...and it's in the air to the left side Backing just a bit is Gunner And he pulls it in Three away here in the bottom of the 7th After 7 innings Negro League I on top 7 to 3 The official attendance has just been announced 45454 fans here at Black Diamond Pk this evening Baltimore chop Into right for a single! Base hit to right for Tucker Third base coach Dick Howser is motioning Terp to third... The throw is cut off... That holds Tucker at first Breaking ball, down low Pflaggstettler sends one toward short Wells will make the pick-up Over to second for one Back to first for the deuce! Terp scores on the play Negro League I conceded the run So now they lead by 3 Negro League I gets the second out of the inning The batter checks his swing Here's the appeal Potpie held up, and draws a walk Smith isn't happy at all with that call Base hit to left for Hays Dick Howser puts up the stop sign... Potpie will stay at second There is going to be a change in pitchers Hilton Smith will hit the showers Rube Foster will be coming on in relief We are in the top of the 8th here at Black Diamond Pk Negro League I ahead 7 to 4 David Gonzalez hits a high pop fly on the infield Willie Wells calls everyone off The ball drifts a bit... But Wells is there to make the play Three down for FOFC Now the Ones will be coming up for what they hope will be their last at bat of the evening They lead by 3, 7-4 Slow ground ball Potpie is charging it He fires it to first He's OUT One up, one down Ball four is the call Kronside can't believe the call And barks at the home plate umpire The ump points out at Kronside Dandridge takes first base Now batting for the Ones... Jelly Gardner... He'll pinch hit for Rube Foster Cool Papa Bell is on-deck Dandridge studies Kronside intently... Now he's walking away from the base Kronside's move keeps Dandridge guessing He's not getting a very good lead Here's a big breaking curve, inside... Gardner takes a cut at it... Hits a grounder to second Blade comes up with the smooth pickup... He tosses it to second... That's one out The relay to first... Not in time Gardner beats the throw by a step Negro League I ahead 7 to 4 with two away this inning Looped to right...and it will drop for a hit Hard slider... And Dihigo takes it right down the middle Strike three called So that's it for Negro League I They fail to score against Kronside In the bottom of the 8th for Negro League I No runs, one hit, no errors and 2 men left on base Dusty Baker will be bringing in a relief pitcher Webster McDonald has been called from the bullpen A few warm up tosses and we'll be set to go Negro League I is making a defensive change Torriente will bat 7th and play left There's a deep fly ball to Cool Papa Bell Bell circles under it... And makes the catch With one down Leonard yells something out to McDonald Webster nods his head There's a towering fly ball hit by Fouts Charleston sprints over, and makes the catch Two out, nobody on Negro League I leads 7 to 4 It's a routine fly into left Torriente ranges over and reaches up This should do it... And Torriente grabs it for the out And that will do it for FOFC Negro League I wins 7 to 4 Smith gets credit for the win McDonald notches the save Mighty takes the loss The hitting star for Negro League I was Ray Dandridge He was 2 for 3 He also knocked in 3 runs And that wraps things up So long from Negro League I. |

FOFC - MANAGER UPDATE
Leaving the field after the game, I'm not feeling well, I'm disappointed in the loss and I'm real disappointed in the fact we've had 2 straight poor starts, so I grumble, "Damn writers, jinxing our pitchers." This time it's not so tounge in cheek. Last edited by Breeze : 11-03-2005 at 09:55 PM. |

I...I...I don't get it. What does it mean when the other team scores more than us?
On a bright note, I have a three game homer streak going.

FOFC - Manager Update
I wake up still grumpy from the last couple days, so I head to the park and boycott the paper once again. |
