Duncan redeemed himself of Games 5 and 6, and Game 7's first half with a brilliantly played 2nd half. All 3 of his assists were in the 4th, and all of them were on big three-point shots.

Agreed to a point. An umpire rarely throws a player out of a game. In basketball tick-tac calls can simply remove one of the best players from the game.

Close balls and strikes are a bit different. I mean if an umpire is calling a wide strike zone, you simply go after those border line pitches.

That one foul on wallace late in the game that put duncan on the line was a bad call. To me it looked like a pretty clean block/steal. I don't know how you can consider that foul a shooting foul.

Last year, the ref was checking to see how many Fouls Shaq had. UMMM WHY?

Now, I'll admit that I'm not a fan of basketball anymore, but I watched bits and pieces of this game, then fell asleep halfway through the 4th quarter (which should tell you something). This game was the equivalent of watching the Cowboys/Cardinals - low-scoring, close, outcome in doubt until late in the game...but some of the most boring, sloppy, poorly-played ball I could imagine having to watch. Was it worth watching solely because it was close and a "deciding Game 7?"

Don't get me wrong, I guess if I had to choose, "crappy and close" is better than "crappy and a blowout," but in a blowout, presumably one team has elevated its level of play to that of a championship team. Maybe I'm just remembering b-ball from when I was an actual fan, but nothing I saw last night brought back memories of when I used to care, regardless of whether it as a close game 7.

It's more for the sense of occasion, since it's the NBA Finals and game 7- sure that carries the weight. Do you turn off the Super Bowl when it's a blowout? Myself, at some point, it just gets boring and I start doing something else- doing something on my computer, pick up my GBA, etc but the game is still on because it's still the Super Bowl.

KSyrup-These teams were two defensive, superstar-less teams. I don't think you realize how difficult it is to play defense in the NBA. When you're guarding a player like Duncan, 75%-80% of defending him is position and ball-denial. Once he gets the ball in a good position, you can play perfect D, but there's still a good chance that the shot goes in. The Pistons played him so well during the middle of this series, that it became fun (for me) to watch. You don't see many NBA teams playing as hard (and enjoying it) on defense as they do when they're trying to score. It may not be my favorite style of basketball, but it's something different, and in that sense it's refreshing.

Agreed. Manu played a lot better and was a key in 3 of their 4 wins. Duncan nearly cost them game 5 with all his bricks from the line. He was bailed out by Horry's heroics. Then in game 7 he scores 25 pts, which is all fine and dandy but he shot the ball 27 times.

I'm guessing the writers didn't want to give it to a "international player". Yes, I know Duncan is not from the US, but he played college ball here and plays for the US squad during the Olympics.

Agreed. And despite the demons of Game 5 and Game 6, Duncan certainly held his own in the statistical category. His 2nd half performance of Game 7 definitely made him deserving of the title.

I felt Ginobli had the edge between the two (did they ever figure out how to keep him from driving the lane?), but I'm not unhappy to see Duncan get it...aside from some terrible times in the series, he was also the main concern for Detroit, and it took a hell of a defensive effort to keep him to the stats he had.
