Unforunately, Danny Sheridan's "bag man" never showed up. Without a smoking gun, the NCAA was powerless to sanction the school.

Fixed.

And BTW, I'm not saying that Auburn should be punished for this with sanctions going forward. There is a chance that they did nothing wrong. Besides playing with a player who clearly should have been ineligible last season.

It's interesting that people with info are apparently willing to talk to Yahoo Sports and "insider blogs" but never the NCAA. I don't know if that tells us more about the integrity of Yahoo Sports/insider blogs or the ineptness of the NCAA. Probably both.

Not to deny this line of thinking, but I think it also hedges on levels of proof. Yahoo! can hear a story, get confirmation to the point they're pretty sure it's true, and report it, while the NCAA needs ironclad evidence - without being able to subpoena it. There's also the probability that the "agents" Yahoo! talks to are also shady characters guilty of something wrong (at least in IRS terms).

Ironclad proof? Shady "agents?" What about the standard of "should have known" in the USC case? The NCAA makes up the rules however they want to meet their agendas.
