I'm a Tottenham fan (so obviously not pro-Gunners), but I think Van Persie is a very, very serious talent. I thought they missed him more than Henry down the stretch last year, and I expect this year's team to be no worse than last years... maybe a couple points. They basically played without Henry already, so I don't see why people think losing him will have a dramatic on-field impact.

There's a rumor that Real Madrid will announce the signing of both Arjen Robben and Michael Ballack from Chelsea next week for 40mil euros.

i agree.

i am actually worry about spuds more than 'pool. while liverpool added a lot of talented people, i am not sure how those talent translate to the premiership. on the other hand, spurs should adjust by now to losing carrick, huddlestone is back (correct?), and berbatov is now in his 2nd season in the premiership.

I don't see how Chelsea can unload both Robben and Ballack. That would put a hurt on squad depth. I think Ballack will have a better year this season. It would give Chelsea some cash, but at this point who do you spend it on?

The paper talk in England is that Real have made that €40m offer but that Chelsea would want £40m (which is about a third more) for the pair. Robben seems likely to move to Real seperately anyway, but Ballack is almost certainly going to stay at least one more season.

Man Utd get the season off to a good start by beating Chelsea in the Community Shield on penalties. It was a pretty even game though I thought Man Utd should have had a penalty in the second half for a shove on Vidic. van der Sar saved all three penalty kicks in the shootout, impressive even if the attempts were rather lousy. Loved Rooney shushing the Chelsea fans after his PK won it.

Nani was only out there 20-30 minutes, didn't do much. No Hargreaves, Anderson, or Tevez yet, they'll likely get a game in one of the midweek friendlies before Sunday's league opener. Evra was probably our best player despite playing out of position. I'm not sure how O'Shea gets ahead of Fletcher for a central midfield role, probably just because of his winner vs. the scousers last year. Fletcher is a much better passer and can do a good enough job on the defensive end.

From watching Lyon and France the last few years I knew that Malouda was an excellent player, he took his goal really well today. Hopefully Chelsea do wind up selling Robben, Malouda/Robben on the wings is a lot scarier than Malouda/SWP.

I thought Utd were comfortably the better team today. Without Drogba up front Chelesea were particularly toothless and had Malouda not come up with that play, and in truth Ferdinand should have done better, then Chelsea would have been justifiably goalless.

I hope Utd are not going to revert to 4-3-3 again this season. It's not a formation I'm keen on particularly when you don't have a central striker like Drogba who has the strength to hold his own and hold the ball while he gets support. Rooney isn't such a player, nor Tevez I don't think, and you finish up with an isolated front man that is crowded out by two and three defenders. Rooney was far too isolated in this game.

In my view 4-3-3 simply doesn't produce the goals that your game deserves. In truth it's the rich man's 4-5-1 and can quickly decay to this. We need to get back to 4-2-3-1 if Saha is fit or a flexible 4-4-2/4-2-4 formation with Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo and Giggs/Nani marauding up front:

.............Tevez......Rooney
........^^.............................^^
<<< Giggs >>>...........<<< Ronaldo >>>

.....Scholes/Carrick.. Hargreaves

Evra.......Vidic......Ferdinand.....Neville

...................VDS

It will take some very determined defending to stop that team scoring 2/3 goals a game.

Yeah, I don't want to see Rooney and Tevez each stuck out on the left for half the game and would rather play two strikers as well. However Ferguson seems unlikely to change his ways and that means we'll almost always revert to 4-5-1 in difficult away matches. He must be banking on the team's overwhelming pace to offset the lack of a target player.

physioroom.com has Saha due back "August 12" but who knows when he'll be ready to go and if he's still in the doghouse. The new boys will all get some work midweek, hopefully they'll be ready for the opener.

I'd love to see us come out your formation in the post above on Sunday, goals from everywhere in that lineup. I bet Carrick scores more goals this season since Hargreaves can cover so much ground behind him, though with Scholes coming back soon they'll all be rotated some I imagine.

Pretty "meh" game, but i thought United deserved the win.

The most entertaining part of the match today was watching Rooney throw his temper tantrums. Manchester United was the better team. I am looking forward to seeing Tevez line up with that squad. Was he even there today? I don't recall the camera being on him any.

I just read that Terry is out for a month. The defense is going to be stretched again this season.

Alex will be in the house shortly, so that should provide some assistance.

I hope they stumble out of the gate though. Anyone but Chelsea is fine by me.

If anything positive can come out of the Ghaly transfer debacle, at least it gave Brucie an opportunity to make this hilarious comment:

"The funniest transfer story of the summer has to go to Hossam Ghaly who had himself sent back to Spurs when his signing seemed to have been completed for days because he complained at training that he had never had to do so much running when he was at Tottenham. Bruce alledgedly replied, 'You mean Tottenham reserves?', a comment that should go down as one of the quotes of the season before its even begun."

Newcastle did quite a bit of business over the weekend it seems. The deal for Cacapa was finalized. Also Jose Enrique was signed from Villareal to fill the LB hole. I'm excited about Enrique as reports from Spain say he is a young, talented back.

So the starting defense looks to be (right now):

Enrique-Capaca-Rozenhal-Geremi

Geremi will play central midfield next season, with possibly right midfield when needed. After being shunted around by Chelsea for the last few years I think Allardyce will put him back in his best position and he will remind everyone how well he did when playing for Middlesborough and why Chelsea bought him in the first place. Also I doubt they will drop Steven Taylor at centreback.

Geremi may indeed play central midfield, but when Barton gets back, they'll be a bit of a glut there, while RB may still be a weakness (with Carr). As for Taylor, maybe they'll move Rozehnal at RB, but you have a former captain at 5 time French league 1 champs Lyon and a great up and comer from Belgium who are natural CBs. Taylor may have to share some time.

Though, I guess Rozehnal could move to RB. Though I think Cacapa will end up being a mainstay and maybe even the captain of the squad.

Nevertheless, the defense has been greatly strengthened.

Good goal by DeMarcus Beasley (or as the Scottish folks accidently referred to him, Marcus DeBeasley) as Rangers win on the road 1-0, and on aggregate 3-0, to advance to the Champions League 3rd Round Qualifying, one step away from the lucrative group stages.

I'm reading that Mido has reportedly signed with Sunderland. Please I hope this is true. I don't want that lazy under achiever on my football team, and why the hell is Southgate even looking at him?

Just tell Yakubu to shut up and get ready for the season start already!

Wow. Against all odds, left back/winger Royston Drenthe (who?) for reportedly 13M Euro from Feyenoord to Real Madrid. So much for Arjen Robben going there... In a couple of years we'll find out whether he is the next coming of Roberto Carlos or was the most overhyped player of 2007.

Birmingham continues their role as Arsenel's junior varsity club, as Arsene Wenger allows Johan Djourou to join Blues on loan. I'm delighted to have Djourou join Blues and think he can make an immediate impact.

I think this is a win-win deal. Djourou can make a good impact there, and gain some good experience for when (if?) he goes back to Arsenal...

Yeah, the defense looked like a pile of beans. Arbeloa was frigging awful, and Finnan/Pennant did not impress. Heinze looks like he would be worthwhile improvement.

i will be severely pissed if djourou does not come back. i should be ashamed to admit this but i would be more pissed about that than any departure in the past 5 years (approximately the amount of time that i've been following arsenal).

i consider djourou one for the future, whether in a backline of toure-djourou or djourou-senderos. i think he has considerable talent and i l ike his temperament. his versatility is a HUGE plus, in my opinion.

interesting. the same general whiners on BS are bitching, moaning and generally pissing their pants about hleb. meanwhile, i think he's had dangerous moments and been one of the primary threats up front . . . with only his aversion to pulling the trigger marring the performance. granted, he actually tried to kick the spherical object toward the posts and net object more than usual today which is a good sign.

i like sagna so far. a definite improvement over eboue. he's also had some nice link up with eboue on the right side.

for eboue himself, i just don't think he has enough in his bag of tricks nor the range of passing to be a top flight right side midfielder.

i can't wait to have dudu up there to partner rvp. he's not the type that can pull off the lone striker very well (in my opinion). and i'm excited by dudu's prospect. and bendtner's.

not thrilled by the left side of the defense thus far. gallas -- who, in my opinion, should NOT have been handed the armband -- hasn't thrilled me. and he has to look after clichy with his overlapping. gah.

on the topic of clichy, if i have any complaints about rosicky, it'd be his inability (or is it unwillingness?) to utlize his overlapping fullback. meh.
