Week 1: #42 Boston College (0-0) at #31 Idaho (0-0)

It's a bit of a rough start for Newsome's career as we struggle to convert third downs and fall behind 21-10 in the 1st half. Newsome stays cool, and with the help of fellow redshirt Freshman Young, we completely dominate the 4th quarter and pull away.

Code:

Week 2: #9 Idaho (1-0) at Washington State (0-0)

Oooof. Newsome just falls apart in his 2nd start with an absolutely terrible game. Washington State takes advantage of turnovers and missed FG's to take a 24-0 1st quarter lead. We try to fight back, but Newsome throws picks on 4 out of 5 drives int he 2nd half to kill any comeback hopes.

Week 5: Louisiana-Monroe (0-2) at Idaho (1-1)

Well we predictably jump out to an early lead against a weak Louisiana-Monroe squad, but it's frustrating that we had trouble putting them away. They keep coming back to make it a one score game until late in the 3rd quarter when a Copeland FG pushes it to a three score game. The defense finally slows them down and we hold on.

Week 11: #15 Idaho (6-1) at Middle Tennessee State (2-5)

Well, this was a weird one. We struggle converting 3rd downs and have to settle for several FG's. A fumble and an INT keep it close and it's a 6-6 tie at the half. We get stopped in the red zone again early in the 3rd quarter and hit the FG. That was all the scoring for the 2nd half as our defense holds on for the 9-6 victory.

Week 12: #12 Idaho (7-1) at #22 Troy (7-2)

The winner of this game clinches the Sun Belt championship and Newsome picks the right time to shine. He throws a 25 yard TD pass to give us a 14-7 lead right before the half. Then he leads us on two 3rd quarter scoring drives, several times using his legs to pick up yardage. This gives us enough of a cushion, especially with the defense shutting Troy down in the 2nd half.

Code:

Week 13: Utah State (4-5) at #12 Idaho (8-1)

We come out to an early lead, hitting two 1st quarter FG's and then a 68 yard TD pass in the 2nd quarter. However, Newsome struggles for most of the game, throwing three picks, and Utah State takes advantage. A TD right before the half makes it 12-7, and then they go ahead early in the 4th on a TD run. Facing a 14-12 deficit, Newsome throws 7 straight incompletions to end the game. Our defense played a spirited game, but Newsome's mistakes were too costly.

S Conrad Montgomery - #604 Overall, #30 S

*Our potential recruit at Punter waited until the last minute to say no to us, so we will be without a scholarship Punter next season. I look for an academic walk-on to fulfill the role for a year.

*USC beat Notre Dame and Texas A&M stays undefeated, but FSU's win over Miami vaults them into 2nd even with 1 loss.

Week 14: #35 Boise State (6-4) at #16 Idaho (8-2)

Of all the losses we've suffered against Boise over the years, this one hurts the most. And it was almost our most glorious comeback. With 20 seconds left and a 3 pt deficit, Newsome completes a 51 yard pass to put us in FG range and send the game into OT. We score on 1st OT, they respond. We hold them to a FG on 2nd OT. A 3rd down sack makes it 4th and 17, but for some reason the coach doesn't call for my 100 Accuracy/100 Distance Kicker to try the 49 yard FG and instead goes for it. The pass is incomplete and we lose.

Week 16: #26 Idaho (8-3) vs. Jacksonville (9-2)

Marino Bowl (Coral Gables, FL)

The interception bug is still affecting Newsome as he throws three picks for the third game in a row. At least this time he tosses 4 TD's to go with them. This helps keeps us in front of an exciting game with big plays, and we manage to pull away late for another bowl victory.

Some more weapons for the passing game. Hopefully these guys can make it the dominant force I've been trying to make it throughout this dynasty.

Graduating Seniors

RB Dana Luther - #94 Overall, #9 RB

Luther came with a lot of hype and had some big moments here and there, but was doomed by several injuries in his Sophomore and Junior years. He got healthy for his Senior season, but by then he was only the 2nd best RB on the team. Finished with 397 carries, 1842 yards, and 18 TD.

Ratings: 32/73 to 59/72

TE Harry Flemming - #780 Overall, #28 TE

Warm body brought in to secure some TE depth. Started a total of 4 games throughout his career and caught 1 TD pass.

Ratings: 17/51 to 38/51

WR Danny Gaines - #319 Overall, #28 WR

Started for his first three years and produced very well, including a 1000 yard season as a Junior. Surpassed by better WR's this season, he spent most of it on the bench. Finished career with 196 catches, 2912 yards, and 23 TD.

Honors: Sun Belt 2nd Team (2009)
Ratings: 25/74 to 44/74

C Kyle Wilson - #965 Overall, #62 C

Despite being a low ranked recruit, he was a solid three year starter and only allowed 2 sacks as a Senior.

Ratings: 23/72 to 52/72

G Henry Clancy - #558 Overall, #47 G

Two year starter who was a decent run blocker, but gave up a ton of sacks.

Honors: Sun Belt 2nd Team (2010)
Ratings: 11/69 to 50/69

T Steven Wolff - #379 Overall, #35 T

Barely made the field in 4 seasons due to lack of development.

Ratings: 16/54 to 20/54

DE Wesley Perkins - #552 Overall, #72 DE

Spent three years on the bench, but produced well as a Senior with 16.5 sacks and 19 TFL.

Honors: Sun Belt 2nd Team (2010)
Ratings:7/72 to 35/72

DT Alvin Niebauer - #750 Overall, #41 DT

4 year starter. Never produced any big numbers, but was a reliable presence in the middle.

Honors: Sun Belt 2nd Team (2008)
Ratings: 14/75 to 34/75

ILB Will Newton - #615 Overall, #32 ILB

I hit the jackpot with this recruit. Newton is without a doubt the best player we've had yet. Was named the Defensive Player of the Year as a Sophomore and tallied 98 or more tackles in every season. Also a beast in pass coverage, he picked off 10 passes and returned 3 of them for TD's.

Honors: Sun Belt 2nd Team (2007), National Top Defensive Player (2008), National 1st Team (2008), Sun Belt Top Defensive Player (2008), Sun Belt 1st Team (2008), Sun Belt 1st Team (2009), Sun Belt Top Defensive Player (2010), Sun Belt 1st Team (2010)
Ratings: 20/75 to 85/85

OLB Dennis Fisk - #624 Overall, #39 OLB

A four year starter who was a good all-around player and helped our terrific run defense in his Senior year.

Honors: Sun Belt 2nd Team (2009), Sun Belt 1st Team (2010)
Ratings: 20/71 to 65/71

OLB Buddy Malone - #983 Overall, #67 OLB

Limited potential kept him as a backup for his entire career, although he did start 5 games due to injuries.

Ratings: 28/46 to 42/46

CB Calvin Person - Unranked Overall, #71 CB

Took some time to develop, but started as a Senior, where he shined with 42 tackles and 4 picks.

Ratings: 21/50 to 44/50

S Alex Lucas - Unranked Overall, Unranked by Position, #30 S in MN

Couldn't reach his potential and languished on the bench for 4 years.

Honors:
Ratings:14/60 to 29/60

Not a great start to the season for Newsome as he throws two picks, including a pick six, and completes less than half his passes. However, he comes through in the clutch with two 4th quarter TD passes and our terrific defensive effort (6 turnovers) stymied BYU all game long.

#8 Idaho (1-0) at #41 Boston College (0-0)

We build a big lead early with two TD drives and then a pick six. Boston College tries to get back in it with a TD of their own, but we finish off another TD drive right before the half for a 28-7 lead and never look back. The defense plays a terrific game, picking off 4 passes and only allowing 6 completions in 28 attempts. Newsome was mostly solid, but once again threw too many picks.

After a slow start (scoreless 1st quarter), this game turns into one of our most complete performances in a long time. Newsome has 362 yards and no picks, Young has another 100 yard game, and the defense completely shuts down North Texas' pass game (opposing QB was 10-34-147-0-0).

Week 6: Arkansas State (0-3) at #13 Idaho (3-0)

Newsome's problems with INT's returns as he throws 3 this week. It didn't end up mattering because Arkansas State is a terrible team, but it's definitely something we need to figure out. Our defense pitches a shutout while holding them to 229 total yards.

Week 8: #48 Louisiana-Monroe (3-1) at #10 Idaho (4-0)

I adjust the passing distances and Newsome avoids INT's this week. However, our offense struggles a bit due to two fumbles from Young and it's only a 14-0 halftime lead. We build on that lead, but LA-Monroe makes it interesting with a 77 yard TD run, but a pick six and Monroe TD pass put it away.

Once again, it's not even close and Newsome is really firing on all cylinders at this point. He throws 3 TD passes in the 1st quarter alone, adds another in the 2nd quarter, and watches Stuvaints and Pierce play the 2nd half. Defense comes up with 5 picks this week.

Week 12: #9 Idaho (8-0) at #28 Utah State (5-3)

We face some adversity against the only other good team in the Sun Belt. Newsome throws his first picks in several weeks, including a pick six that gives Utah State a 14-0 lead in the 1st quarter. We regroup and score on three straight TD drives before the half to take a 21-14 lead. We run that lead to 28-17 in the 4th quarter, but Utah State stages a comeback and ties it up with 1:54 left. Newsome completes three passes to put us in FG range, but the FG wasn't needed as Young breaks through for a 19 yard TD run to win the game.

Week 13: Troy (5-4) at #9 Idaho (9-0)

Bad news early as Young goes down with an injury and will miss the rest of the season. Crangle does a decent job in backup duty and Newsome's solid performance has us with a 21-7 lead int he 4th quarter. However, we cannot run out the clock and Troy scores two 4th quarter TD's to send the game into OT. We hold them to a FG on their first possession and Newsome throws a TD pass to win the game.

*The stage is set for the huge showdown next week. Both us and Boise State are undefeated. Boise State is 5th in the BCS rankings and we are now 6th. Would be a great time to finally break our losing streak against them.

*Ohio State, USC, Virginia Tech, and Texas are the top 4 teams heading into the final 2 weeks.

Week 14: #5 Boise State (11-0) at #6 Idaho (10-0)

Well, that sucked. Boise State's QB absolutely shreds our defense (24-27-424-4-0) and we cannot get any offensive momentum going with a pitiful 3 for 14 on 3rd down performance. Our running game was nonexistent without Young. We are now 0-8 against Boise State.

*Arizona State beats Arizona 41-6. Arizona finishes 1-10.

*Ohio State and USC retain the top two spots. The only drama left is if a win in the Big 12 Championship is enough to vault Texas into the top 2.

*To make matters worse, Newsome injured his wrist and will be out for the bowl game.

*Kansas State beats Texas in the Big 12 Championship, ending any drama about the title game, which will be Ohio State and USC.

*Despite being ranked 13th, we are relegated to the minor tier Marino Bowl once again.

Week 16: #13 Idaho (10-1) at Florida Gulf Coast (9-2)

Well this was a wild one. Both offenses seemingly move at will and trade scores throughout the 1st half. FGCU takes advantage of one of Stuvaints' three picks to make it a 2 score game midway through the 3rd quarter. Terrance Greene returns the ensuing kickoff for a TD, keeping it close. Our defense finally gets a stop and Stuvaints finds Greene to tie it up with 13:00 in the 4th. FGCU comes right back down and retakes the lead on a 25 yard TD pass. They get the ball back with a chance to put the game away, but Chad Isaacson picks off a pass and takes it to the house to tie the game up. A 3 and out gives us a chance to win the game in regulation. Stuvaints leads us into FG range and Copeland kicks the game winner with no time left.

WR Greene 9-129-1, Kickoff TD Return
WR Gotchy 4-87-1

*As frustrating as Stuvaints play was at times, I do think it's a good story that he got a chance to start in his last college game and came away with the victory.

Starting to really hate Boise State. Odd to me that you couldn't sell it out, either, when you both are undefeated.

Yet another thing to fix for TCY2!

You and me both. The problem with attendance is our City Economics, which are rated as "Lousy". Our attendance has been steadily rising at least. But yeah I agree that there's no way that game wouldn't have been sold out, even if it was tons of Boise State fans making the trip.

Graduating Seniors

QB Reuben Stuvaints - #268 Overall, #25 QB

Stuvaints was meant to be the savior when I recruited him and I was hoping to be able to start him as a true Freshman. But I never liked the way his ratings looked (including a low Avoid INT number). He did start as a redshirt Freshman and had a few moments as starter over his first two seasons. But it became clear that he wasn't going take us to the next level and lost his job to redshirt Freshman Pete Newsome. Stuvaints did start the final game his career, and (despite 3 INT's) led us to an exciting victory. Finished with 6975 yards passing, 59 TD, and 30 INT.

Honors: Sun Belt Conference MVP (2008), Sun Belt Top Offensive Player (2008), Sun Belt 1st Team (2008), Sun Belt 2nd Team (2009)
Ratings: 24/62 to 60/62

RB Drew Kemp - #747 Overall, #65 RB

Was caught between RB's who were better before (Bob Phillips, Dana Luther) and after (Alex Young) he came to Idaho. Never started a game. Finished with 446 yards rushing and 3 TD.

Ratings: 28/76 to 32/76

WR Rob Monroe - #538 Overall, #45 WR

Pretty solid results from a guy who wasn't ranked very high. His best year was as a Freshman, when he had 952 yards receiving. Never replicated that due to the superior talent coming behind him, but still had a nice career overall. He started 30 games over 4 years and finished with 148 catches, 2534 yards, and 24 TD.

Honors: Sun Belt 2nd Team (2008)
Ratings: 25/79 to 53/78

WR Steven Harding - #637 Overall, #52 WR

Had a couple of decent seasons in backup duty, but never cracked the starting lineup. Caught 71 passes for 936 yards and 9 TD in his career.

Ratings: 32/59 to 54/54

C Randall McNaught - #556 Overall, #30 C

Was never develop his already limited skills and languished on the bench for 4 years. Participated in 157 plays in his whole career.

Ratings: 12/54 to 37/54

G Rico Carlson - #609 Overall, #53 G

Another player who couldn't develop. Carlson did get to start most of the season as a Sophomore, but later found himself on the bench behind much better players.

Ratings: 3/78 to 35/78

T Kenneth Wayman - #651 Overall, #57 T

A 4 year starter aside from injury problems in his Sophomore year. Wayman did give up a ton of sacks, but still played better than expected given his recruiting ranking.

Ratings: 11/63 to 60/63

K Corey Copeland - #187 Overall, #5 K

One of the best kickers in college football over the past 4 seasons. He did have a career lowlight as a Sophomore when he missed an extra point in OT against Washington State. He rebounded from that nicely, hitting 74 of 89 FG's in his career, including a 60 yarder as a Junior.

Honors: National 2nd Team (2009), Sun Belt 1st Team (2009), Sun Belt 1st Team (2010), Sun Belt 1st Team (2011)
Ratings: 12/83 to 95/95

DE Leon Degley - #755 OVerall, #71 DE

Never cracked the full time starting lineup, but played as the DE on passing downs for his last two seasons and managed 14.5 sacks in that span.

Ratings: 14/52 to 28/52

DT Nick Manning - #595 Overall, #33 DT

Started as a true Freshman and never missed a game. A reliable presence in the middle, he finished with 93 tackles, 45 assists, 23 TFL's, and 6 sacks in his career.

Ratings: 26/49 to 51/51

CB Phil Coleman - #565 Overall, #38 CB

Limited academics limited his development and he never started a game in 4 years. Picked off 2 passes in his career.

Ratings: 22/56 to 33/56

S Stanley Walton - #603 Overall, #42 S

Was a bad fit for my defense as he was terrible at Man to Man defense, which is a majority of what I run. He did finally crack the starting lineup as a Senior and picked off 2 passes

Ratings: 31/54 to 47/54

It's the Newsome show for two more seasons and Strickland looks like he'll be the guy to step in after Newsome graduates.

Code:

Lack of depth at RB. Will have to take the shirt off Barnes if there's an injury. Young has been unstoppable and Crangle looks like he could develop to greatness himself.

Harmon developed nicely and looks to be a 4 year starter at WR. Greene and Gotchy are two of the best in college football.

We have some great starters on the line, but too many guys haven't developed well at all. New recruits have tons of potential.

Some great potential for our special teams.

Just like with the OL, too many of these guys aren't developing.

Brutley and Gilman are great. Hoping to get some development from Urpsis.

Code:

Definitely the strength of my defense. Expecting great things from this group this year.

Week 1: #26 Oregon State (0-0) at #16 Idaho (0-0)

We start right where we left off last season. Newsome throws a couple TD passes to give us a 21-3 halftime lead. The momentum shifts when Newsome throws his only pick of the day and it is returned for a TD. Oregon State adds another TD to move within 3 pts, but Newsome regroups with 3 more TD passes to put the game away.

*Ole Miss beats Arizona 36-10. Arizona brought in another recruiting class ranked in the 100's, so I don't think they're going to be much better anytime soon.
