Buster Posey was called up today. Maybe he will start tomorrow and catch Lincecum. Oh, and Pedro Martinez is going that day.

Penny can be phenomenal when he's on his game.

Or he can be a rich man's Tomko, as you pointed out.

The good news is, you're only paying him a pro-rated portion of the minimum salary, so he can be a poor man's Brett Tomko and what're you really losing?

I don't have kids.

He'll be slapping Brewer-loving kids and then Prince Fielder will go nuclear on his ass.

Barry Zito 3.94 (9-11) vs. Jeff Suppan 5.20 (6-8)

Wonder if the Giants are regretting passing on Dye at the deadline.

Since June 6th, their team OPS is up 10 points! However...after the rubber game against Milwaukee today, the Giants have four remaining with the Cubs, and 21 remaining against the NL West. Their record against the West, year-to-date, is 26-25.

Can that extra ten points of OPS give the Giants a boost in their record against their own division as they strive for 85?

Gutsy performance from Bumgarner last night but the pen let him down. The Giants are now three back in the wild card and it's looking the the Rockies aren't going to ease up on the throttle.

Win or lose, it has been a nice year for the Giants. Arrow pointing upward for next year.

Welcome back.

SF: B. Zito (10-12, 3.94 ERA) Ari: B. Buckner (2-6, 6.79 ERA)

Angel Villalona accused of murder. Maybe, just maybe, the victim was a Dodger fan.

Hey, just trying to find a silver lining here.

That just means the Dodger fan will have the best seats in the house for the playoffs while Villalona does 20 years and the Giants sport the most incredible pitching staff ever to miss the playoffs.

Silver lining?

Bit of a shame they let Correia walk.

I have mixed feelings about Sabean/Bochy returning. Bochy brought sanity to a pitching staff that was in complete disarray when Alou was in charge. I am not a fan of his lineups but I figure 25% of that is on Sabean.

As for him, his veteran pickups like Miller, Medders, Uribe and the more pricey Affeldt worked out well. He was unlucky (I suppose) with the Sanchez and Garko trades. If both stay healthy and hit their career averages, the Giants are probably in the playoffs. The scouting and development departments seem to be working pretty well. I guess I am fine with Sabean returning as long as he doesn't do something like sign Winn to a 3 year/19M extension...

Not sure if this has been brought up (too lazy to read back), but, I was looking at Zito's stats the other day and other than his Cy Young year, he really never has had a great win/loss record and usually has an ERA in the high 3s to low 4s and only went over 200 strike outs in a season once. Looking at his numbers, I'd say he would be a number 3 or 4 spot pitcher and not the ace of any staff.

Just my opinion when looking at his stats and I did not look to see if he had a lot of 1-0 or 2-1 type losses where he just got no run support, but, I think the Giants were stupid to spend the money they did on him, given the numbers he had in Oakland and not based on 'hindsight is 20/20' from his 3 seasons in SF.

He let Colletti re-sign Blake and Ramirez this past offseason, but other than that, the only signings of any note I can remember have been Schmidt (not a bat!) and Andruw Jones (yeah, four years after he made that statement, and we all know how that worked out).

He's raised ticket prices, concession prices, and parking prices, but as far as I can tell, the only money he's put back into the team was in upgrading the stadium facilities so he could charge more for tickets.

So, yeah, despite the success the team has had, I stand by what I said about McCourt five years ago. Even last year's run was basically the kids + Manny - who at the time, remember, wasn't costing the Dodgers a cent.

Bring it up again five years from now when all of the kids have exhausted their arbitration eligibility and see what McCourt does then.

Back to your regularly scheduled Giants thread.

Zito finished pretty strong last nite, and thus finished the season with a 4.03 era. I think he had a pretty decent year and hope he can build on it and have an even better year next season. good luck Barry.

It's really sad that a guy who's making approximately $20M per year is considered to have a pretty decent year at a 4.00+ ERA.

Nope, he's pretty much guaranteed season long success now that I've dealt him away in fantasy baseball.

Either way, I'm pretty happy with the stats I've gotten out of him to this point.

So maybe he was shamed out of pursuing a singing career and actually decided to concentrate on, you know, pitching?

PS - Barry Zito now has the lowest ERA of any SP on the Giants staff. If you had told us that at the beginning of the year, we would have assumed Lincecum, Cain, and Sanchez quit to start their grunge rock band.
