Week 7 - UTEP (2-2) (-7) @ SMU (1-4)
Final: UTEP 19, SMU 17 This was a dangerously close game. The wishbone, which SMU runs, continues to give us fits. They had 200+ yards rushing, averaging 6.3 yards per play. They were making our defense look foolish all day. Pete Wolf hasn't impressed me at QB. As a sophomore, he'll have more playing time opportunities in the coming years. We'll put Stevens back behind center and pray he doesn't throw to guys in a different uniform. It took 7 weeks, but we finally get hit with some serious injuries: OLB Uzzell - 28 weeks (severe hamstring pull) WR Rausche - 10 weeks (broken ribs) Week 8 - #12 Boise State (4-1) (-14) @ UTEP (3-2) Final: Boise State 30, UTEP 20 So close, yet so far away. Week 11 - UTEP (4-3) (-15) @ Nevada (0-6) Final: UTEP 45, Nevada 7 Nevada has to have one of the worst offenses I've seen in all my years of coaching. They have now lost 23 straight games. Ouch. Also, with only 12 scholarships to give this year, we've already wrapped up recruiting. We are still talking to some kids about walking on, though. Here are your 2011 UTEP commitments: Code:

Week 12 - UTEP (5-3) @ Fresno State (6-3) (-10)
Final: UTEP 34, Fresno State 3 It feels good to beat Fresno State so soundly. They're probably in the top 3 of the conference in terms of talent and they never really threatened us today. We'll give the game ball to the defense as the Bulldogs couldn't establish the run all day. Forcing them to pass the ball, their junior QB Nick Easter threw three interceptions. This was probably our most complete game we've played defensively this season against decent competition. I won't give the defense all the credit. The offense was also clicking on all cylinders today. QB Stevens has really played much better since his benching earlier in the year. With games remaining against Hawaii and Corpus-Christi, we have a shot at an 8-3 season. Week 13 - Hawaii (3-6) @ UTEP (6-3) (-11) Final: UTEP 28, Hawaii 24 After last season's 52-7 embarrassment, we get a little revenge against our rivals from the island. Code:
Week 14 - Corpus Christi (3-7) @ UTEP (7-3) (-21) Final: Corpus Christi 20, UTEP 17 Classic let down game. I'm sure this win made Corpus Christi's season. Unfortunately, we're left with a bad taste in our mouth after a mostly successful season. |

SAYING GOODBYE...
RB Broderick Lyles 6'2, 218 Richardson, TX (Richardson HS) HS rank: #161 3.44 GPA (Metallurgy) CAREER STATS: 44 GS, 1036 carries, 4918 yards, 39 TD, 111.7 YPG, Broderick Lyles is easily the best player I've ever recruited at UTEP. He's started every single game for us since his freshman year. He's been an incredible work horse running back throughout his four year stay in El Paso. I'm really gonna miss the kid. He was a joy to coach and watch the past four years. I'm definitely interested to see how he does in the NFL. With a scout rating of 79/79, he has a decent shot of making a team. |

Week 2 - McAllen (0-0) @ UTEP (0-0) (-7)
Final: UTEP 49, McAllen 0 In front of 48,000 on a rainy day in El Paso, we absolutely destroy McAllen in the opening game of the season. The defense was spectacular all day, holding McAllen to under 100 yards of total offense. Their offense rivaled the Nevada team we played last season, which I referred to as "one of the worst offensives I've seen in all my years of coaching." Our defense wasn't on the field much today as we spent 38+ minutes with the ball. Behind the rushing attack of Tyrell Hopper, we easily ran over McAllen's defense. McAllen was also a dreadful 1/14 on third down conversions. This is one of the better opening games in recent memory. Week 3 - Akron (0-1) @ UTEP (1-0) (-8) Final: UTEP 41, Akron 17 A win today doesn't really feel like a win at all. With one devastating hit from Akron's defensive end Randall Vance, starting QB Randy Stevens will most the remainder of his senior season due to torn knee ligaments. Redshirt junior Pete Wolf from Victoria, Texas will now be the man behind center. Besides the loss of Stevens, we had a pretty good game today. Once again we were able to control the clock with our rushing attack. Akron was never really in this one at all. |

Week 4 - UTEP (2-0) (-1) @ Texas Tech (1-1)
Final: Texas Tech 35, UTEP 30 This is a game we probably should've won. We were doing all the right things on offense, but we couldn't contain their run game. Backup QB Pete Wolf had an outstanding first game behind center (18/26, 308 yards, 3 TD). It was hard watching this one slip away. Code:

Week 7 - UTEP (3-1) (-3) @ Nevada (1-3)
Final: UTEP 45, Nevada 31 Nevada has certainly improved since last season. They absolutely torched our secondary all day. I was glad to see this one end. They're passing attack was giving us fits. RB Tyrell Hopper just ran wild on their defense (23 carries, 226 yards, 1 TD). He definitely was in the zone today. Our 51.4% on third down conversions has us ranked #4 nationally in that statistic. Next week we head up to Boise to see where we stand against the WAC elite. Week 8 - UTEP (4-1) @ #5 Boise State (5-0) (-13) Final: Boise State 59, UTEP 7 An overall pathetic performance today. I was hoping to make it more of a game. Very disappointed. Code:

Final: San Jose State 38, UTEP 6 We committed 8 turnovers today. Yes, you read that number right - 8. That was really the only story of the day. Apparently we're still hungover from that ass kicking that Boise State put on us. Week 10 - Fresno State (5-2) (-2) @ UTEP (4-3) Final: Fresno State 35, UTEP 16 I'm really trying to stay positive here. It's hard to do when we're playing like this. Week 13 - UTEP (6-4) (-4) @ Hawaii (3-6) Final: UTEP 27, Hawaii 10 Appreciative of a winning record, but the middle of the pack WAC finishes are becoming very frustrating. I'm wondering if I'll ever get over the hump here in El Paso. I really thought this year would've been the one where we broke out of this rut we're in. Oh well. Maybe next year. |

Week 1 - UTEP (0-0) @ Georgia (0-0) (-5)
Final: UTEP 31, Georgia 21 In front of a sold out hostile Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, we pull off the upset against the SEC school. It was a fairly even matched game as neither team was dominating at any point during the day. Both team's starting quarterback struggled and looked rusty in the first game of the year. QB Pete Wolf was 17/37 for 254 yards with three interceptions. Starting Bulldog QB Blair had three interceptions, as well. Despite the win, injuries hit us hard early. Starters indicated by asterisk. RB Andre Kell - 10 weeks (ACL damage) *OLB Chris Leary - 7 weeks (broken tibia) *DT Bernie Sousa - 10 weeks (appendectomy) *DE Rickey Tyler - 25 weeks (torn knee ligament) DE Roman Woodson - 3 weeks (hyperextended elbow) Week 3 - Corpus Christi (1-0) @ UTEP (1-0) (-9) Final: UTEP 54, Corpus Christi 7 We get some sweet revenge for that 2010 game, in which Corpus Christi pulled off the upset win against us in El Paso. This was also the first sell out at home we've had since I took over in 2004. People are finally starting to take interest in what we're building and it feels good to that support. Once again, despite the win, we lost a key player to our team as QB Pete Wolf will miss 7 weeks of action for arthroscopic knee surgery. This definitely puts a damper on the day. Daryl Silverstone will get the nod in his place. Code:

Week 3 - #23 UTEP (2-0) @ Texas Tech (0-1) (E)
Final: Texas Tech 29, UTEP 26 (OT) I hate losing to the Red Raiders. We dominated in most statistics, but we fall short in overtime. I guess our time in the top 25 will be short lived. Adding insult to injury is the fact that ALL but one of our scholarship defense ends are out and most are done for the year. I've moved ILB Courtney Finley to the position and I'm predicting more moves by the end of the year. QB Silverstone - 21/44, 244 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT RB Preston - 18 carries, 73 yards WR Roca - 5 receptions, 85 yards CB Arians - 9 tackles, 1 assist, 1 INT (19 yards) Week 4 - UTEP (2-1) @ San Jose State (1-2) (-3) Final: San Jose State 34, UTEP 14 I guess when it rains, it pours. QB Silverstone suffered an eye injury in the game today and will be out an unknown period of time. Great. Check out the stats from our amazing performance. Code:

Week 6 - #17 Rice (3-0) (-22) @ UTEP (2-2)
Final: UTEP 16, Rice 10 This is a win our team needed badly. Morale is definitely up again after knocking off the #17 team in the country. This was a defensive struggle. Both offenses couldn't get going as neither team broke 300 yards of total offense. Third string quarterback Gino Dimcheff played alright in his first start (15/25, 156 yards, 1 TD). RB Preston ran for 100 yards on 22 carries. Ofcourse the win doesn't mean much if we don't show up next week against Southern Methodist. Week 7 - UTEP (3-2) (-4) @ SMU (3-2) Final: SMU 30, UTEP 27 (OT) My suspicions were right. Classic let down game. Ugh. Code:

Week 8 - Fresno State (5-1) (-8) @ UTEP (3-3)
Final: UTEP 38, Fresno State 26 This is one of the most bi-polar teams that I can remember coaching. We travel to Louisiana Tech next week. They're terrible, but you never know what will happen with this team. Completely unpredictable. Code:
Week 9 - UTEP (4-3) (-14) @ Louisiana Tech (0-6) Final: UTEP 34, Louisiana Tech 9 This was a game where we were down 6-3 at halftime. It was the worst half of football I've had the displeasure of watching in a long time. When I said that La Tech was terrible, I meant it. They may be the worst team not only in the conference, but in the country. Needless to say, when we were down at the half, I lost it. It's a blur now, but I think I got my point across as we outscored them 31-3 in the second half. Taking a look at our last 3 games.. Nevada (109) Tulsa (101) at Hawaii (84) All three games are winnable, but Hawaii is an interesting matchup. You never know how rivalry games are going to play out. We'll also get back starting quarterback Pete Wolf when Nevada comes to town after our upcoming bye week. |

We'll be paired against in state SCE school San Antonio (8-3). This will be UTEP's first bowl game since I took over in 2004. The other exciting news is that we've pulled off the biggest recruiting coup in college football. #4 player in the country RB Stanley Harden has accepted our scholarship offer to come play football here in El Paso. This is huge. Hailing from Glendale, Arizona (Ironwood HS), Stanley had numerous offers from across the country. We're excited to have him. ----- CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK - WEEK 15, 2013 Code:

UTEP Report: Inside slant August 8, 2014 - Renovation has been completed on Sun Bowl Stadium. Following the 2012 season, the school announced that 5,800 additional seats would be added to the stadium. - Star redshirt junior cornerback Trent Arians has been suspended for the 2014 season due to his involvement in a local El Paso theft ring. Arians was All-WAC 2nd team CB last season. When asked for comment, Coach Daniels said "Trent is a good kid who made some bad decisions. Even at 21, it's apparent that he still has a lot of growing up to do. I hope he decides to return to the team next season after his suspension." - UTEP continues to improve on their academic reputation as they edged out Stanford for the highest GPA during the 2013 season. The top 5 included: UTEP (3.16), Stanford (3.15), Georgia Tech (3.03), Duke (3.02) and California (3.00). - LG Donovan Heubeck (19/50) was the lone UTEP player drafted this offseason. He was picked in the 6th round (26) by the New York Giants. He joins former star UTEP player RB Broderick Lyles (42/50). Last edited by Recoil : 02-16-2010 at 04:14 PM. |

Week 2 - #20 Texas Tech (1-0) (-3) @ UTEP (0-0)
Final: UTEP 52, Texas Tech 10 We got some revenge against our in-state rivals after last year's heartbreaking overtime loss. The game wasn't even really as close as the score indicates as the Red Raiders scored all of their 10 points in the fourth quarter. They had a decent running game, but they couldn't convert on third downs when they needed to (5/17). An interesting fact is that they actually controlled the time of possession, holding onto the ball for five more minutes than us. That should tell you that we had some quick scores against them. Ofcourse their four turnovers on the day also helped us cruise to a relatively easy win. Explosive RB Bryce Preston had 104 yards rushing with 12 carries on the day, along with 2 TD. With the blowout, we were able to get 3 quarterbacks in for some snaps. Starting QB Wolf had 202 yards, hitting 14 of his 21 passes. Senior WR Victor Roca had a good day catching 6 passes for 99 yards. Week 3 - Georgia (1-0) @ #23 UTEP (1-0) (-7) Final: UTEP 27, Georgia 3 This was the first sell out at newly renovated Sun Bowl Stadium. In front of a crowd of 57,300, the Miners had no trouble with the Bulldogs from the Classic City. The Dawgs had a much better run defense than we saw in the first week against the Red Raiders. Today they limited RB Preston to 73 yards rushing on 23 carries. Fortunately for us, the Dawgs have a big problem in their secondary as we torched them through the air for 300 yards. QB Wolf had an amazing game in his second start of the year (24/36, 300 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT). On the other side of the ball, we really need to thank UGA's QB Covington has he threw 3 picks on the day. Most revealing statistic: time of possession UTEP - 37:58 UGA - 22:02 Also, UGA was 2/12 on their 3rd down conversions, which certainly didn't help their cause. |

Week 4 - Tulane (1-1) @ #19 UTEP (2-0) (-7)
Final: UTEP 37, Tulane 22 This game really showed where our weakness is on defense: the secondary. Tulane really had no trouble moving the ball through the air against us. I can see that missing CB Arians is going to hurt us a lot when we start playing some better teams in the future. Fortunately for us, the majority of WAC schools are rushing teams. QB Wolf had another good game for us (22/27, 248 yards, 2 TD). Hopefully he can play this well throughout the rest of the season. Week 6 - #18 UTEP (3-0) (-26) @ Louisiana Tech (0-3) Final: UTEP 52, Louisiana Tech 19 We roll in our first game of conference play. Code:

Week 7 - Nevada (1-3) @ #17 UTEP (4-0) (-27)
Final: UTEP 59, Nevada 10 This was actually one of our more sloppy games of the year so far. Backup QB Evans had 2 interceptions and we also lost a fumble. Other than that, we played really average against a really bad team. Ofcourse at the end of the day it's still a win and I'll take it. RB Preston had one of his better performances on the year rushing for 147 yards on 15 carries. Week 8 - #15 UTEP (5-0) (-10) @ Tulsa (2-4) Final: UTEP 59, Tulsa 8 Surprisingly we were only up 10-0 at the half. As you can see by the score, we came out in the second half and took it to Tulsa. This was our last "warm up" game before we really get into the meat of our WAC conference schedule. The next few weeks looks like this: vs #2 Boise State at #9 Rice at SMU QB Wolf continues to his unreal play as you'll see from the stats below. Code:

Week 9 - #2 Boise State (6-0) (-3) @ #14 UTEP (6-0)
Final: UTEP 24, Boise State 23 The curse has been broken. After 10 years, we've finally beaten perennial WAC powerhouse Boise State. This is a game our team, program and fans will remember for a very long time. Looking only at the stats, someone would probably think, "How did they manage to win this game?" They outgained us 373 to 290. They had the edge in 3rd down conversions. They won the turnover war. Statistically we shouldn't have won this game. Ofcourse statistics don't necessarily win you a game, but Boise State certainly gave us chances to stay in the game and we properly took advantage of that. Down 23-21 with 1:28 left in the fourth at midfield, QB Wolf hit Victor Roca for a 34 yard completion to Boise's 16 yard line. After a few running attempts that basically go nowhere, we eventually run the clock down to :16. Since we had used our 3 timeouts, we bring out kicker Charles Tonkin. Tonkin hits the 21 yard field goal attempt to put us up 24-23. After the kickoff, Boise is left with :06 on the clock with no timeouts remaining. Boise QB Hammond drops back and searches the field for open receivers as he's blindsided by DE Courtney Finley to end the game. Truly a classic. Next week we travel to #18 Rice, which has "let down" game written all over it. Hopefully I'm wrong. Week 10 - #14 UTEP (7-0) @ #18 Rice (6-1) (-2) Final: Rice 23, UTEP 14 Well, unfortunately, I was right about the let down game. Our defense had no answer for the wishbone and the #6 running attack in the country. Offensively, we couldn't get anything going through the air, which really put a damper on our gameplan. Next week doesn't get any easier as we travel to SMU (5-2). Code:

Week 11 - #19 UTEP (7-1) @ SMU (5-2) (E)
Final: UTEP 55, SMU 0 No let down here. We bounce back in a big way after our collapse against Rice. Nothing much else to say as we completely dominated this one. Here are some key stats from today's game: Total rushing yards: 291 Total passing yards: 330 Total yards: 612 3rd down plays: 12/14 QB Wolf - 19/29, 226 yards, 2 TD QB Dimcheff - 6/7, 104 yards, 2 TD RB Preston - 20 carries, 106 yards, 2 TD RB Kell - 13 carries, 123 yards, 1 TD WR Roca - 11 receptions, 182 yards, 3 TD Injuries are starting to hit harder as the season goes on. QB Wolf left the game with a stretched knee ligament. He's questionable for 5 weeks, so we'll rest him next week against San Jose State. Starting ILB Banks is out 3 weeks with a concussion. He'll likely miss the remainder of the regular season. Week 12 - San Jose State (3-6) @ #18 UTEP (8-1) (-17) Final: UTEP 27, San Jose State 24 We won this within the last 2 minutes of the game. Not good. Perhaps I underestimated the Spartans from San Jose State. The good news on the day is that Boise State rocked Rice 41-7. That leaves a 3-way tie for first in the WAC. Boise State, Hawaii and ourselves are currently 5-1 in conference play. If we beat Hawaii next week, that puts us at first as we hold the tiebreaker over Boise State. Exciting times in El Paso. Week 13 - Hawaii (7-3) @ #16 UTEP (9-1) (-14) Final: UTEP 49, Hawaii 13 Rival Hawaii comes to town as we play for our first WAC title and we absolutely blanket them. Utter domination. We beat them at their own game as we rushed for 352 yards on the day and holding them to only 173. I wouldn't say we shut them down completely, but with our horrible history against option teams, I say we did a pretty damn good job. Another curse is broken this season as we win our first WAC title. It's been a long time coming. Code:

Houston Bowl - #13 UTEP (10-1) (-4) vs. #24 Buffalo (9-2)
Final: Buffalo 24, UTEP 17 A disappointing finish to an otherwise memorable year. We couldn't stop their running attack and they just pounded down our throats all day. Absolutely disappointing, but I'm very happy with what transpired this season. It's definitely one for the memories. ----- CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK - WEEK 15, 2014 Code:

Great season, Coach. I'm really enjoying your dynasty. It's a great read, and I always look forward to seeing how your Miners are going to do.
Keep up the good work! |
