Angels score 7 in the bottom of the ninth to beat the M's.

Oh, and Jeremy Guthrie was arrested after the Cardinals game tonight for impersonating Kevin Siegrist.

Nats played like garbage for most of the night, committed 4 errors, had a starter go 5 innings and give up 5 runs (3 earned), and still won by 8. Doubt that happens often.

Shows you how bad the Cardinals are playing so far this season. So sick of this team putting players in positions they have never played before.

Rangers have to get rid of Dyson. He has been a disaster so far. Has lost three games, two of them when they had multiple run leads in the 9th.

According to my dad the World Series is over and the Reds have been crowned champions. They are clearly the best team in baseball at everything. Any reasonable person could see the juggernaut they are.

If they don't start losing I might have to stop answering my phone and my doorbell.

To be fair, Angels did this to the Ms and As already too. Wish I had some of whatever they're taking right now.

I remember Ron Roenicke starting Mark Kotsay in CF against you guys in the NLCS back in 2011. Mind you, this was about 10 years after Kotsay was a viable CF. So, I do know the feeling. Except in much more important games

This is just a gut feeling, and I don't have any data at the moment to back it up, but is there any position in sports that has as much volatility as a MLB relief pitcher, specifically a closer? It seems that closers tend to go from unhittable to batting practice level overnight, and once that happens, they never get back. It the rare closer that lasts more than 3 years at a high level. Maybe it is because of their limited innings that bad outings get amplified compared to those of a starting pitchers, but it seems they get the yips at a higher than average rate.

Just thinking off the top of my head for the Rangers, they signed John Wetteland from the Yankees after they won the World Series. They got two great seasons out of him before he fell off of a cliff and retired. Joe Nathan was great in two seasons for the Rangers, then goes to Detroit and is a hot mess. Shawn Tolleson was a great setup man in 2014, was handed the closer role in 2015 and had a WHIP of 1.16 over those two seasons. Last year, it ballooned to a WHIP of 1.73, and the closer role was handed to Sam Dyson. He got 35 saves and gave up 19 earned runs in 70.1 innings. So far this season he's given up 11 earned runs in 3 innings.

This is partly why advanced metrics are so against big money on relievers.

In many cases reliever usage patterns are worse on arms than starting pitchers. It's a lighter workload overall, but there are more high leverage situations where guys tend to overthrow and there isn't consistent rest. That's largely why you see so many flame outs. Though I'd so add that relievers tend to be guys that weren't consistent or healthy enough to be starters to begin with.

Sam Dyson is just plain horrible this season. Has now blown three saves, and not picked one up yet. Had a 7-6 lead, blew that by letting 4 consecutive guys reach base, then lost the game when the Rangers couldn't turn a double play.

He's been great. Crushed the Cubs the other night. Have to figure he'll come down to Earth a bit when teams get a better scouting report on him though.

Slump time, no home run tonight. But he was 3 for 5 with two doubles.

Man, I should have stayed with the Nats-Braves game until the end. I had no idea C.B. Bucknor was going to complete the dreadful performance behind the plate with such a finale.

Unreal what happened.

Good summary article/clips over on Deadspin (which we can't link to, as a reminder) for anyone who missed it.

The Royals starting pitchers had given up four home runs total to start the season. Their starter tonight has given up four to the Rangers through 5 innings.

It looks like Josh Hamilton's career is finally done. He had surgery on his left knee that he was rehabbing from, when he injured his right knee. The Rangers released him from his minor league contract.

It's pretty likely that there was some sort of verbiage in the contract that dirt biking was off-limits. So this is not exactly outside the realm of possibility.

That being said, the Giants are crazy loyal to their players, so I would be floored if this is the case.

Interesting Pirates stat so far. They are 7-0 in weekend series games and and 0-9 in weekday series games.

No, it looks to me as though his leg bounced off the dirt a couple feet early and missed the bag. In the immediate aftermath of the collision, I don't think you can go from intentionally spiking someone to checking to see if they're okay as fast as Machado did.

Trout is hitting .343 with 5 HR, the Angels have two other regulars hitting over .225 right now. I can see this getting to a Ray Bourque situation where I'd be happy to see him go somewhere else and actually compete after he hits 30.

Small sample size. They'll hit better. In the long run this season, hitting isn't the problem there. That lineup is at worst a league average at the plate, and could be better.

What would have been a properly voiced concern is the fact that Richards was moved from the 10 to the 60.day DL, and Cam Bedrosian hit the DL today.
