1. I guessed correctly before entering the thread.

2. I'm generally with wade here. I've been to three sporting events involving Philly fans, two in Philly, one in New York (well, Harrison, NJ) where they were the travling fans.

Two of the three events were problematic. The first was a USA soccer game where there wasn't even club division. There was just a bunch of ridiculous racial remarks coming from pretty much fans on all sides of me during a game there. I've been to many USA games, and have never seen anything like it.

Event two was fine.

Event three was the Philadelphia Union fans (soccer) in their game against the Red Bulls this year. Once it was clear the Red Bulls were going to win the game, the group of Philly fans in the section above us started taunting the fans below with all kinds of foul language, and then eventually throwing beers down onto us.


Conclusion: In my very personal, anecdotal experience, Philly fans have gone above and beyond to be assholes in 2 of 3 possible occasions. So for me, the stereotype holds up.

I'm with CTHomer. Growing up in central Jersey I was right on the Philly/NY fan line. All of the Philly fans I know personally are very nice people and good fans, however I have been to countless sporting events in Philadelphia and have witnessed much worse behavior there by Philly fans than in any of the 30-40 other venues in various cities I have been to.

Are there assholes in every city and who are fans of every team, for sure, but like CT said, in my personal experience Philly fans are by far the worst.

I'll trump you on that. Of the New York fans that I know personally about 3 out of 5 of them ARE assholes. My car has been vandalized while at a game in New York, the only "crime" there was having a Philadelphia Wings license plate holder. I have had beer thrown at us while sitting in the stands in New York, that was before the game even and the crime there was having a Philadelphia hat on. I have heard the gauntlett of verbal insults. While at an Eagles/Giants game in Philly at the vet in the "famed" 700 level the only incident which I witnessed was a fight between a Giants fan and an Eagles fan which was instigated by the Giants fan.

With all that said, other than the car being vandalized and beer thrown at, I have enjoyed games involving New York teams when I get to sit next to good fans (like a Flyers game where a Rangers fan sat in front of us and he exchanged good natured remarks for much of the game but nothing was taken personal and also had other good non game related conversations with us and others in the area; with that said he was in front of us on his way out and we encountered an asshole fan that tried to get in his face, that fan was backed down by other Flyers fans).

When I go to "enemy" territory for a game I use one simple rule, don't make eye contact. I will cheer when my team does well, but while looking at the field so to not look like a taunt. I will gladly enter a spirited back and forth exchange between good fans of the other team but only if I have already extablished communication with them and can tell that they are good natured about it. The problem with that is that it could pull in someone who s not involved in the conversation and may be an asshole (an asshole fan that feels the need to become involved in the conversation and take it to the next level).

You know who could use a little more attention this Wednesday? The Redskins McNabb jersey-wearing bandit Devlin, that's who.

Now if it wasn't clear from my post this morning, I was fully in favor of the Eagles removing the jersey from the guy, no matter where he was standing. He admitted he was doing it to provoke people, to "stir the pot." These are the people you have security for.

It turns out Devlin was being an even bigger jackass than we thought. A few emailers have pointed out to us that Devlin was on the field with a VIP pass.

There are very strict rules for those VIPs. They have a specific place to stand; they can't hold umbrellas, they can't tweet play-by-play, etc. They essentially have a press pass and it's a privileged area. The Eagles are going above and beyond just by letting fans stand that close.

The blog Bleeding Green Nation breaks down the situation in much the same way our emailers explained it. The only rational conclusion: Devlin is a doorknob.

There's a story by Tim McManus of Philadelphia Sports Daily that's beginning to pick up steam among the football community that Andy Reid ordered Eagles security to have a fan remove his Donovan McNabb jersey. Deadspin and Pro Football Talk have already pounced on it, among other media outlets. The obvious angle here will be that the fan can wear whatever he wants, and that Reid is a jerk for having him remove his jersey. The additional fuel to the fire is of course that it also happened to be a McNabb jersey. The fan, 43-year-old Jim Devlin, commented "I’m a type of guy that likes to stir the pot a little bit."

Allow me to shed a little light on the situation...

At camp, they have a "VIP area" where they bring small groups of fans to watch the practice in the same place the media guys are allowed to stand. It’s a privileged area. The VIP fans stand just a few yards away from the field. A couple weekends ago, I witnessed Reid scold one of the VIP fans that was being overly critical of an Eagle WR that dropped a pass. Reid warned that he was in the VIP area, and could just as easily be sent back to the masses. The Eagles don't have to provide this level of access to their best fans, but they do.

From the picture at the top right, I can clearly see that Devlin was in the VIP area. Frankly, I’m not sure how or why he’d be allowed on the field with a Redskins jersey in the first place.

In the picture in the middle right, here's a better idea of the VIP area. The 2 fans to the right with the orange stickers on their shirts are examples of "VIP fans." They are standing in an area about 15 yards wide in between 2 practice fields… See how well behaved they are, and how happy they are to be mingling among the players?

The picture at the bottom right shows a typical view a "VIP fan" would have of the action taking place on the field.

You don’t want your players getting distracted, even if they’re just playfully having a little give and take with an opposing fan, or whatever other distractions an opposing jersey might provide. The players are there to work, and I applaud Reid for stopping any potential distractions within his control.

If you wear a jersey of an opposing team when you’re supposed to be a VIP guest of the Eagles, that’s completely unacceptable. Good for Andy Reid. Devlin should have been immediately escorted back to the common area (which can be seen in the background of the third picture), but the Eagles were actually nice enough to simply have him remove the jersey. Jim Devlin, I pronounce you a dope. Glad I could clear that up. Let's get back to actual football discussion.

That's ok though, don't let the facts get in the way of a good stereotype.

I'm sure they were within their rights to ask him to change it, particularly because he was in the VIP area, but that doesn't change the fact that it was a pussy thing to do. Would have been better to use it to get your players fired up and excited.

But again, it's just some security weenie, so who knows. Maybe he was having a bad day.

The article on the guy didn't have him come off so bad...he's a McNabb fan. He said he wanted to see what the reactions were, because he's still a fan of his.

The problem here is...I'm still a McNabb fan. I'm sure many others are, too. There's no way in the world I'm buying a Redskins McNabb jersey though, no matter how much I like him.

A college professor from Lower Macungie Township who wrote a book about the first 50 years of the NFL knew Philly fans had a reputation for mistreating visiting fans, but the Wisconsin native said he didn't know how bad it could be until he went to the Eagles game Sunday.
Craig Coenen and his father, Peter Coenen, left Lincoln Financial Field jubilant after watching their beloved Green Bay Packers defeat the Eagles in the NFC wild card playoff game.
"We were just thinking about how nice a day it was and it was a good memory," Peter Coenen said. "Then I looked up and said, 'Oh my God.' "
His son's Toyota Camry had been stomped on, kicked and beaten (kind of like the Eagles). Fans tore out the windshield wipers and motors and used them to scratch the paint, broke off the side mirrors and left footprints and dents on the hood, trunk and roof.

"It was just drunk, obnoxious Eagles fans," Craig Coenen said Monday after getting a repair estimate of $2,163. "Philadelphia is notorious for this, but hopefully the fans who did this are the exception, not the rule."
More likely, it will go down as another example of Philadelphia sports fans at their worst and add to their reputation as out-of-control, violent, destructive drunks and all-around sore losers.
"When I left Green Bay everyone said to be careful — the Philadelphia fans have a reputation," said Peter Coenen, who still lives in Wisconsin and took his son to the game as an early birthday gift. "My son had a Green Bay Packers shirt on. As we drove in, they gave us the finger."
The reputation dates to 1949 when fans threw glass bottles at an umpire for a bad call during a Phillies game. Incidents continued over the years, including the hurling of snowballs at Santa Claus at Franklin Field in 1968 and at the Dallas Cowboys at Veterans Stadium in 1989.
In April, Philadelphia Phillies fan Matthew Clemmens, 21, of Cherry Hill, N.J., became known as "Pukemon" after he purposely vomited on other Phillies fans, an 11-year-old girl and her father, an off-duty Easton police captain.
Coenen, 40, who grew up 20 miles south of Green Bay's historic Lambeau Field, has been a Packers fan all his life. While working on his master's degree at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, he embarked on research that eventually became a book, "From Sandlots to the Super Bowl: The National Football League 1920-1967."The book ends with the Green Bay Packers winning the first Super Bowl in NFL history.
Coenen, who now teaches at Lehigh as well as Mercer County Community College in New Jersey, said he became well aware of Philly fans' reputation during his research and from living in the Lehigh Valley for 18 years. And he admitted he should have known better than to wear Packers clothing to Sunday's game.
After paying $25 to park, Coenen said he and his father stayed in the car listening to the Ravens-Chiefs AFC playoff game on the radio while a group of drunken young men carried on outside. Once inside the stadium, Coenen said he and his father enjoyed friendly banter with the Eagles fans.
"We had a very positive experience … until we went to the parking lot and the car was pretty well trashed," Craig Coenen said.
Another car belonging to Green Bay fans met a similar fate, Coenen said. The owners, from Maryland, filed a police report at the same time as Coenen. He said they all agree the likely culprits were the group of six men in their 20s who were parked between them in a black extended-cab pickup truck.
"By the time we got back, the truck was gone and there was an empty case of Busch Light," Craig Coenen said. "And someone had vomited in the parking spot as well."
This isn't the first time an out-of-towner had a car vandalized at a Philadelphia sporting event. In May, Flyers fans are suspected of vandalizing a car with a Canadian license plate belonging to a sports writer for the Montreal Gazette. He wrote a column about the city's lack of brotherly love and the damage to his car, which included a flat tire and broken-off bug deflector. He wrote that Philadelphia fans may be as bad as Montreal fans, who booed the U.S. national anthem a few weeks earlier.
Coenen sees no comparison between fans in Philadelphia and Green Bay.
"The Packer fans are very cordial with fans who come to Lambeau Field," he said, adding he feels confident even Eagles fans would "be treated nicely" there.
And he said he'll never venture to another game in Philly.
"I still love football; it's great," Craig Coenen said. "And I'm very happy the Packers won — even more so, the Eagles are done for the season."

Howie Rose told a story today during the broadcast about the fan who eventually got the home run ball Valdispine hit out last night. The ball was thrown back on the field, retrieved by a ballgirl who then gave it to a young girl in the stands.

When they gort home the father realized it was the first major league hit for the young player. He called the Mets and arranged to bring the ball to the game tomorrow so Valdispine could have it.

Classy move so the young player could have that souviner.

I've been to plenty of games in Philly and never had a problem. I was however threatened with murder, as an 8 year old, during my only trip to Yankee Stadium. So there's that.
