Pretty incredible fall from grace for Sumlin, given all the major jobs he's supposedly been one of the frontrunners for over the last few years

Yes he is. BYU wanted him because he is LDS and his understanding of recruiting in a tough environment with strict rules, but he wanted to bring the triple option. Part of his offer was, no triple option and we will bring in your OC. Looks like it should be Kalani Sitake, which will make me ecstatic to see one of my best friends from High School coaching in the D1 ranks and I am moving up to HS LB coach next year for one of the local high schools here. There are some BYU fans that are hoping that Kyle Whittingham is so tired of Utah's AD that he is going to jump over. I do not see that happening.

Yeah, Word on the street is Whitt told the players to not do anything and it wasn't adhered too. Whitt is alumni as well, but I don't see him coming and taking a pay cut.

Given that he's ended up a rather obvious "second choice" with how all this has played out, I'm not sure I completely grasp how someone would ever feel content or wanted. No slight to him intended, I'm just saying that I don't know if I'd be willing to take the job at this point.

So the way it plays out with BYU...you have to be active, you have to be temple worthy and you have to go through an interview with one of the church general authorities. Word has it Kalani has been our AD's #1 but he was forced by the BoT and the GAs to move Ken to the #1 spot, he fit a more mission of the church / Bronco Mendenhall mold. Tom looks at Kalani as that passionate recruiter that is solid at his X's and O's that will take us to where we need by getting the talent we need to get there. Kalani knows how it has played out. My last message to him was, can't wait for the welcome home BBQ and his response was me too!

That's cool, I know there's additional steps/dynamics to the process there. But I'm looking at it from the outside thinking "okay, so as long as the AD is here then I'm in good shape ... but if the BoT ever takes a hand again then ... "

I know I keep harping here, but it's been 11 years since HC changes at BYU.
Looks like Kalani has convinced someone to finally coach in College. Get him away from the ranch and his comfortable lifestyle. Ty Detmer is going to be the OC at BYU.

Bryan McClendon to leave UGA after the bowl, join the staff at South Carolina.
IMO that's the biggest loss from the Georgia staff in the shake up.

Yeah. Not a surprise, as it has been rumored from the beginning that he was leaving. Seems he and Kirby have some animosity from the recruiting trail. Thomas Brown was a surprise, though. He had already committed to stay. That co-coordinator title did it. More money, and chance for Richt to train him as an OC was too big to pass up (plus the money bump from the title). |

Just wait till the NFL coaching hiring/firing gets into full swing. Any bets on how many job openings Mora's agent floats his name for?

Although, I really wasn't happy with Clay Helton being fired, he has done a good job hiring his staff. In the last few days, he has hired:
OL Coach Neil Callaway from WKU who used to coach at Alabama back at the day and learned under Bear Bryant. WKU was among the nation's leaders in allowing fewest negative plays. Passing Game Coordinator (and either RB or QB coach) Tyson Helton who helped develop WKU's QB into a top producer this year. DC Clancy Pendergrast who produced top Pac-12 Defenses despite playing with very limited numbers (and no DB coach because Kiffin wanted his drinking buddy on staff and insisted on 2 OL coaches.) Excited about these hires.

Solid coach but stubborn to no end with some of his play calling. Needs a dual threat QB to be effective. Terrible recruiter and talent evaluator. A few plays into a game you know whether or not you have good Mazzone or bad Mazzone.

As far as being excited, I dunno. I'm not sure there's many offensive coordinators out there that don't have critics. I watched probably ~4-5 UCLA games per season, and while I wasn't blown away by their offense under Mazzone, they were pretty effective overall. Here's how they ranked in his time there: 2012 - PPG: 31st, FEI: 33rd, S&P: 42nd 2013 - PPG: 20th, FEI: 11th, S&P: 20th 2014 - PPG: 36th, FEI: 23rd, S&P: 8th 2015 - PPG: 45th, FEI: 39th, S&P: 23rd He had Brett Hundley at QB for the first three seasons and true frosh Josh Rosen this past season. How impressive you find those numbers probably depends on how highly you rated their talent. |

It wasn't the statistical performance that was a problem, it was inserting a square peg into a round hole. The ASU game was a good example this year. They are a heavy blitz defense. So maybe some quick throws like slants would be helpful. Nope, zone read with a QB who doesn't keep the ball and we lost because everything was rushed. There were also the endless run, run, pass series that we went three and out.rush fir 4 yards. Rush for -1 yards, swing pass for 3. Punt.
No adjustments no matter the opponent No mixing it up depending on the opponent Last edited by MrBug708 : 01-07-2016 at 04:25 PM. |

Reports say UGA will name current Bama DB coach Mel Tucker as their DC.
That would be the former Bears & Jaguars DC, for those keeping score at home. The guy whose last 3 NFL squads ranked 30th in yards allowed.

Looks like Casteel is going to UTEP to be the DC.
Jake Spavital is looking to either get closer to home or for a OC position with full control and won't end up at WVU. Joe Wickline is likely headed to WVU to be Holgorsen's OC. Matt Caponi is leaving Arizona to coach safeties at WVU as well. The Wickline hire is interesting. He won't be calling plays at WVU. He's very likely brought in to help with line play/running game and to give Holgorsen eyes in the box to relay info to him on the field. Something that would have been useful this past season. |
