Somebody refresh my memory: was the Jets defense supposed to be a turnstile this year?

I don't think it's supposed to be bad but San Fran might just be a juggernaut too.

I posted about this way too much last year, so apologies for harping on it again, but: this Al Michaels & Kirk Herbstreit team fucking suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

I love classic Al, but he can't get excited anymore and will have the same tone of voice for a false start or an incredible touchdown catch. Herbstreit says practically nothing & he shows even less emotion than Al. Painful.

How soon until we are adding Tua to the list of horrendously overpaid QB's? It shouldn't be this hard to throw the ball to Hill, Waddle and Achane against a depleted defense.

He looks like he's never seen a zone before in his life, and you can bet if he can't figure it out in the second half teams will do the same to him every single week.

The kickoffs are just as awesome as the illegal formation penalties.

Tua will probably come back from this obvious concussion, either today, next week, or in a month or two, but one time, he will never come back.

How can you continue to play where any moderate hit to your head causes a serious concussion. Hes going to end up a vegetable by 40 if he keeps playing (assuming they allow him to)

I don't think this is an over-reaction, but it seems irresponsible to think that Tagovailoa can play again and perhaps the NFL should step in if the Dolphins say otherwise and an expert group of independent doctors don't concur.

What happens to his contract if he can't play again, both in terms of what he gets paid and the cap situation?

Wondering the same thing. This says he will lose $167 million of the contract if he chooses to retire, and most of the $42 million signing bonus. The only way the team is on the hook for the whole contract is if he plays or if he is forced to retire. I imagine if he is forced, there would be some kind of settlement.

I couldn't agree more. We're watching a guy out there taking years, if not decades, off of his life.

Yeah, I would expect a settlement too, and it would be the right thing to do. I mean, you can make an argument that it's a workplace injury, and if you wanted to go far enough you could claim (reasonably, I think) that the employers have been negligent with this injury (especially with Tua's previous concussions).

I don’t have something as amazing as an NFL career to lose, so I get that I can’t speak for Tua. But from my perspective, coming back isn’t worth it. You want to be able to remember your friends’ and family's names when you’re in your 40s. And at the rate he’s going, he won’t.

Hey, Denver wants in! We have Stidham or Wilson although I have to imagine Wilson's upside means he stays in case (or when) Nix has to be benched if he's not the next Drew Brees.

I'm reasonably sure Brady would be an upgrade over about half of the league's starting QBs.

Any player that suffers a concussion should be required to wear a guardian cap the rest of the season. I'm also not sure why someone like Tua isn't wearing one already.

Flacco isn’t going anywhere as long as the Colts think they have a playoff shot. They missed out on winning the division by one game last year with a backup QB playing most of the way.

I’m not really sure why they aren’t mandatory anyway. If they really do work everyone should have one on.

Just saw the Tua play and that's a textbook example of why runners shouldn't lead with their head.

All eyes turn to Tua Tagovailoa's status - NBC Sports.

Why would he settle? Part of these big contracts is the guarantee in case of injury. In Tua's case, that's the entire 2026 portion of the contract ($56 million).

In other words, his agent structured the contract specifically to address this possibility. That the worst happened just two games into the contract is just part of the deal.

If Tua retires (and I looked at the clip again, the way his arm is out, he might not survive another play like that), I'm sure he'll time the announcement the way the Dolphins want. My guess is that they'll choose to write off $84 million against the 2026 cap. But when you give a guy the big contract, you give him insurance as well, and everyone knew it was higher risk for Tua.

If the Dolphins want to challenge that $56 million for 2026 on the basis that Tua could be cleared to play, maybe, who knows, it's not a good look for the NFL and they know it. In the next CBA, perhaps there will be cap relief for this sort of thing, but that has to be negotiated.

There's so much money in the NFL right now, and given that there's maybe 200 guys in the NFL worth paying the big contracts, agents and teams are filling the cap in more and more inventive ways (look up void years if you want a lesson in crazy). Membership in that group of 200 changes a lot, year-to-year, and the rest of the NFL is minimum salary plus a tiny bit, maybe.

It's a difficult situation for the Dolphins, but Tua earned this security based on how the CBA works. Think of how it would suck for Brock Purdy, for example, if the same thing happened to him right before he gets to sign his big contract this coming spring.

If someone is forced into medical retirement, do they still count against the cap? I know other leagues will allow for medical exemptions. You still have to pay the contract, but you don't get the cap hit.
