Former gymnasts explain the twisties that stopped Simone Biles - Upworthy

The TWISTIES!

Yes, Gymnasts don't do new vaults straight onto flat ground. They do them into foam filled pits to learn them, because it is very dangerous to hit the ground at the speed and odd angles. The Twisties mean you can't trust your body's sense of position in mid air, so you panic mid vault. Then your mind becomes your worst enemy, as it preys on you as you try to fix it.

Normally, the best way to fix it is to go back to basics, and do repetitions into the foam pit to retrain the sense of control you feel over what your body's doing. That takes time and resources, neither of which are available in Tokyo right now.

There's a picture of Biles after her vault, which I think does a great job of showing the panic affecting her (remember, she was supposed to do 2.5 twists, or the equivalent of a 900, and only did a 540 because her sense of aerial control betrayed her)

SImone Biles after vault.

funny that you have the spoiler there, because with the various news pushes my phone gets I can't hide from a single Olympics spoiler. Literally the second something big happens, I'm getting 4 pushes on the same thing. I can't escape it.

yeah, I know. I still remember Barcelona '92 where the six o'clock news would always preface their sports report with "Turn away or mute the tv now if you don't want to know the Olympic results).

How things have changed in 30 years.

Yeah, I haven't been noticing any spoiler alerts on ABC/CBS. Either they are like "screw it, that's NBC's problem" or I'm not keeping a good handle on what happens on what day.

edit: Nightly news are the slowest of the slow anyway. WaPo has announced it like three different ways on FB already.

That's what we do around here. Often, when people are trying not to. But someone says something, another responds, eight more people make it into a political issue even if it shouldn't be, and ... yeah.

I think the view is that unlike 1992 when you COULD possibly go into events five hours later not knowing who won, now we're looking at THIRTEEN or so hours and that there's so many ways to find out, there's no way to avoid it, so why even try.

NBC is doing it to themselves as well to be fair - if you log into the NBC Sports app it will happily tell you the headlines even if you just want to watch some of the minor sports before their prime time coverage starts.

In general I agree though - seeing multiple people post spoilers on LinkedIn, ESPN and Apple with push notifications in addition to the usual suspects… unless you aren’t going to go online or check your phone for an entire day, not sure it’s possible to stay away from it.

My last post on Biles. This is what I was trying to say in a very weak manner.

Hernández: Simone Biles excels as a human being but fails as a gymnast

This is a bit more defensible, but I wouldn't call someone with five Olympic medals and five all-around world championships a failure. If they were saying "the results this Olympics were disappointing", then yeah, that's true. that doesn't make her a failure as a gymnast.

HOly crap that group of 100+ 8 year olds lying on top of each other. Every one of them will get infected

6 Olympic medals and 17 world titles sounds like failing to me.

I'm not a gymnastics expert but how many do you have to win to be considered good?

Google knows the right answer.

"Greatest gymnast of all time" and pretty much every site it takes you to says Simone.

I feel kinda bad for Mexico re: the softball uniform debacle.

Though that's kinda limited since you sorta get what you pay for when you pack a "national" team with mercenaries.

Must have been some hellacious bedspreads the village.

Not having your ADHD medication makes a whole lot more sense to me. Knew there had to be something else. No wonder she couldnt focus.

That is a bummer, and feel sorry for her.

I'm in Tokyo, at the hotel that the IOC is headquartered in, and many, many national delegation heads are staying in. It's a very busy, and jovial atmosphere here.

I missed this comment but wanted to comment. I've been very disappointed with the coverage of gymnastics this Olympics. Not showing many of the gymnasts competing, especially if they are struggling, even Americans. The male all around they didn't even show the Chinese and Japanese (I think) gymnasts who finished 1st and 2nd until the 5th apparatus out of 6. There just seemed to very little drama or tension as a result.

Edward, I think they are talking about the prime time shows. I was coming on here to say the same thing. They are cut horribly. Just watched the Gymnastics team finals prime time replay, and it really showed hardly any of the action. There was actually a big fight for bronze that GB won, and it would have been great if they covered it. Meanwhile, I am watching the full coverage of the Women's all-round right now, and even with b-team announcers, it is so much better. The prime time coverage of the Olympics just keeps getting worse.

Djokovic two days ago: "pressure is a privilege". Then today, in the bronze medal match.. (I do understand his frustration, but I think that he deserves to get called out for losing his cool after calling out others for their mental responses.)

"If you are aiming to be at the top of the game you better start learning how to deal with pressure and how to cope with those moments — on the court but also off the court."

Whoa, whoa, whoa, you cannot call out an athlete. Duh. Maybe he was having a mental issue. That is why he threw a racket and smashed another. That is okay in todays world. Mental health issues and all. Wake up.

thanks for the tip on watching nonprime time, nonNBC

nbc sucks so much. It's like watching an ADHD kid's brain.

I care more about Djoko acting like that in an Olympic event. If he loses it at the French Open it doesnt bother me at all. The tennis players that get down and just retire bug me.

Anyway, tough crowd. First Simone and now Djoko. Two athletes that many consider the best ever(personally I like Federer much more but think Djoko is better all around for GOAT discussion) at their sports.

Try engaging your brain.

I said quite well "I understand his frustration.. but considering his words of two days ago"

If you can't (or more likely, willingly will not) understand the difference in the situations, God help you, cuz none of us can.

Either you can compete or you cannot. Either you accept defeat or you cannot.

It is all mental and not based on race. If you are willing to give an athlete a break on mental issues, should you not give every athlete a break on mental issues?

When an athlete throws shit and breaks shit, that seems like a mental issue. So give the guy a break.

Or is there a double stabndard?

The issue is that the breaking shit white guy publicly roasted the black gymnast, and then goes out and embarrasses himself by throwing a temper tantrum.

So, no, no double standard.

Djoko is an interesting case. He is as mentally tough as they come in big moments but he also has occasional(much less now than earlier in his career) where he just loses focus and starts pouting or throwing a fit. Probably competing with two of the biggest professional's of all time in any sport(Federer and Nadal) helped mature him a bit.

And yes, clearly out of line for Djoko to comment on Biles and Osaka.

In situations like this I feel it is better to focus on the person and the career. These are all time greats so they have proved they are mentally tough enough to compete at the highest levels so if they are having additional struggles I am going to take the side of the athlete. They have proved themselves to be able to handle all sorts of different issues.

Got robbed in the relay. The Aussies appeared to jump early twice with no call.

Also, WTF happened in our beach volleyball. One second the ref overturns a call to make it 12-12, the 2 minutes later reverses the reversal and we're down 11-13.
