The series is tied 0-0.

Final
St. Louis00000000003370
New York (N)00000000000040

WP - J. Tavarez (1-1, 3.21)
LP - D. Wheeler (1-3, 2.10)
SV - K. Calero (1, 2.91)

ST. LOUIS BATTING
Doubles: E. Renteria (17, 6th inning off Seo, 0 on, 1 out.) B. Buchanan (2, 11th inning off Roberts, 2 on, 2 out.)
Runs Batted In: R. Sanders (29), B. Buchanan 2 (10)
Stolen Bases: K. Robinson (18), E. Renteria 2 (7)

Stolen Bases: J. Reyes (18)
Caught Stealing: T. Perez (2)

Attendance: 40544 (55601) Glove Day at Shea Stadium
Weather: Rain (62 degrees), wind blowing out to right at 6 mph
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Matt Morris
Game Notes:
51 minute rain delay in 4th inning. Kerry Robinson extends his hitting streak to a career high 19 games!

You guys are seeing some great hitting by a dark horse in K-Rob, he extends his hitting streak to 19 games, with a hit in the first inning!! I'm glad we're winning games without Pujols and two of our starting pitchers.

The next few days are going to be tricky. Woody has 6 days left until he can pitch and Suppan has a week. I need to bring someone up for one game. It'll be either Ankiel or Simontacchi.

Next game: vs New York
Probable starters:
STL (27-12) (RD: 12-4, 0 GB) R J. Simontacchi (0-0, 0.00)
NYM (16-23) (HM: 7-10, 6 GB) R S. Trachsel (3-3, 3.31)
The Cardinals lead the series 1-0.

I send Journell down to AAA for a game or two and bring up the Simo man. Hopefully, he can pitch 5-7 innings. He'll go back down unless it takes longer than expected for Woody to come back. I have a day off after a 3 game set in Chicago, that should help. He's pitched well in the minors, so I hope it carries on here.

I was going to bring up Ankiel, but Simo is doing much better at AAA.

I can't wait until you're home and we get to catch a real game! Morris pitched a gem last night vs the Diamondbacks!

Yeah, but Cedeno got hurt. I hope they bring up Hart.

We'll try to catch a game next month, ok?

They did bring up Hart! Too bad Marquis didn't get a much deserving win today, now the damn bullpen is blowing it. Well, at least we won! How about Marlon Anderson?

Next month sounds good, I already have tickets for the May 13th day game vs the Braves.

Unbelieveable! The Simo man pitches a gem and I'm back on a 5 game winning streak, 13-2 in our last 15 games!! Kerry gets his only hit in the 7th inning, beating out an infield hit with the bases loaded.

Next game: vs New York
Probable starters:
STL (28-12) (RD: 13-4, 0 GB) R R. Parrott (0-0, 0.00) *ML debut

Rhett Parrott makes his major league debut. Jason isn't making it easy for Rhett to show the manager he's for real.

One day after Luis Gonzalez had his 2000th hit, Bernie Williams follows suit with a 2000th hit of his own. Congrats to both great hitters!

Rhett pitched a great game and we had a late rally to sweep the Mets and win our 6th in a row. K-Rob did it again as he has another great game. He's stole 19 out of 20 bases as well. Now, we head to Chi-town for a little Cards/Cubs series. The Cubbies are a shocking 11 games out. They need this series, even this early in the season.

Go K-Rob go!!

We win our 7th in a row!! The Cubs fall to 12 games behind us in the Central and we are now ranking 3rd in pitching in the Majors.

We send Rhett Parrott back to AAA and keep Simontacchi up, but he will be watched carefully. We also call Jason Marquis back up for another look, which also allows Morris another day rest. Matty Mo will close the series out tomorrow against probable starter Kerry Wood.

** Breaking St. Louis team news **

Saturday 5/22/2004 :

Mike Matheny has been signed to a contract extension, $1,000,000 per year, for 3 years.
Steve Kline has been signed to a contract extension, $1,600,000 per year, for 3 years.

I want Matheny to remain a Cardinal becuase he's so great defensively. I saw what he wanted ($1.2 mil/3yrs), offered a little less, and then signed him. Kline was another one who I want to keep aboard. He's a good setup guy and a lefty to boot.

Kerry Robinson hit the longest homer of his career, it went 407 feet. Kerry Robinson extends his hitting streak to a career high 23 games!

I guess my worries about 'immersion' are gone with this game. We win our 8th game in a row and Houston is in 2nd place 9 games behind us! The best part was when Kerry Robinson came up to bat in the 7th inning 0-3 for the day. He smacks a 2-1 fastball over the fence for his first HR of the year and extends his hitting streak to 23 games. The excitement was unreal for me watching the text scroll up the screen. Which also reminds me I would love to see a graphical representation of a game I am managing. Nothing fancy, but watching that HR would have been even better!!

Next game: vs Chicago
Probable starters:

STL (31-12) (RD: 16-4, 0 GB) R M. Morris (5-0, 3.03)
CHI (18-25) (HM: 8-13, 13 GB) R K. Wood (2-4, 5.14)

I go for the sweep and a 14 game lead on the Cubs in the Central.

Marquis stays up and I send Simontacchi back to AAA. Marquis gets his 2nd chance to be a starter in the big leagues and if he doesn't pitch well, Simontacchi is next in line.

I give Robinson and Edmonds the day off and I lose 1-0. Ughhh! Games like this tick me off! Wood was good, but Morris was better, pitching 9.1 innings, allowing 0 runs on 6 hits and striking out 10!

K-Rob doesn't waste any time extending his hitting streak to 24 games with a 1st inning single off of Kris Benson. We're getting healthy again and Pujols has about 3 weeks until he's back.

Next game: vs Pittsburgh

Wednesday 5/26/2004 :
Dee Haynes was promoted from AA Tennessee to AAA Memphis.
Josh Teekel was promoted from A Palm Beach County to AA Tennessee.
John Mabry has been released.
Bubba Trammell was promoted from AAA Memphis to the active roster.

Mabry just doesn't have it anymore and I cut him so I can at least bring up some power in Trammell. So long John!

I never really knew how much I miss Pujols until a game like this. Rolen and Sanders had plenty of opportunities to win this game for us. I really need a better hitting 2nd baseman, the platoon of Marlon Anderson and FA signed Mike Bordick just aren't getting the job done. Up until this point I haven't really thought about a trade. We're doing well, but Houston has won 4 in a row and are only 6.5 games back. With Chicago's woes, it might be a two team race in the central this year.

Next game: vs Pittsburgh

Yeah, the Cards are really doing well! I've caught bits of the games while Ms. AE is busy.

Game Notes:
Kerry Robinson's hitting streak was snapped at 25 games!

What a sad day. K-Rob's hitting streak is snapped just 8 away from tying Rogers Hornsby's record of 33, set back in 1922. . Pittsburgh takes the series (2-1) and the last time the Cardinals lost a series was back on April 16th, 17th, and 18th vs the Colorado Rockies.

Next game: vs Houston
Probable starters:
STL (32-15) (RD: 16-5, 0 GB) R M. Morris (5-0, 2.65) vs Houston (1-0, 2.25)
HOU (26-21) (HM: 16-9, 6 GB) R R. Oswalt (4-3, 4.29) vs St. Louis (0-0, 5.40)
The series it tied 0-0.

The season series is lead by the Cardinals (5-1)

** Divisional Rival Series **
The Houston Astros have been on a terror, and the Cardinals seem to have some weakness with 1B Power hitting Albert Pujols on the DL.

Houston is (6-4) in their last 10 games, but have won 4 in a row... including a two game sweep of the Cubs.

St. Louis is (7-3) in their last 10 games and have lost 2 in a row against the 4th place Pittsburgh Pirates.

Injuries:
STL 1B Albert Pujols - (fractured hand, one week)

HOU - None to starters

Series Probable Starters:

Game 1
Morris (5-0, 2.65) vs Oswalt (4-3, 4.29)

Game 2
Williams (6-1, 3.10) vs Miller (3-5, 5.23)

Game 3

Bad news for the Phillies (6 games in back of the Braves) as they lose Eric Milton for 4-5 weeks. He was 3-3 with a 3.15 era this year.

** Trade Talks **

I'm contemplating a trade with Pittsburgh. I had an email from their GM saying he wanted Jeff Suppan and two minor leaguers for LF Rob Mackowiak. I wouldn't accept that one, but I have a deal in mind and want your thoughts. (and anyone else's )

Cardinals:
SP Jason Marquis (3-2, 6.04)
SP Blake Hawksworth (AA) (4-3, 3.48)

-TO-

Pittsburgh:
SP Kip Wells (2-2, 3.98)
LF Rob Mackowiak (0.293, 7 hr, 22 rbi)

Trade Breakdown:

Name G GS W L SV ERA IP HA R ER BB K
J. Marquis 9 9 3 2 0 6.04 50.2 60 36 34 19 34 ($368, 2004)
B. Hawksworth 9 9 4 3 0 3.48 62.0 59 24 24 14 47 (AA) (minor league contract)

Name G GS W L SV ERA IP HA R ER BB K
K. Wells 11 11 3 5 0 3.76 67.0 69 31 28 24 46 ($1.8, 2004)

Name G AB H 2B 3B HR RBI R BB K AVG OBP SLG
R. Mackowiak 40 92 27 5 0 7 22 14 12 13 .293 .383 .576 ($322, 2004)

Ratings comparison:

Name Age Role Stuff Movement Control Dur. SP Dur. RP
J. Marquis 25 SP 6 7 5 D C
B. Hawksworth 21 SP 3 4 6 D -

K. Wells 27 SP 6 6 5 C -

Name Age Pos Contact Power Eye Speed Stealing Def. Range
R. Mackowiak 27 LF 4 5 4 C C C

(Trade settings are set to 'hard' and 'favor prospects'.)
I like this trade for us, we have two good young pitchers in AAA (Wainwright and Parrott), plus Hawksworth has a D duration rating as a starting pitcher. Mackowiak has lower ratings than Marlon Anderson, but he's hitting the heck out of the ball (as you can see in our last game vs the Pirates). His only drawback is his fielding rating of E at 2B. Kip Wells is also someone I see going after for a contract extension, if and when he becomes a Cardinal. Maybe I'm just being silly and should wait until Pujols comes back from the DL? I definitly think Wells is an upgrade, but even if Mackowiak starts playing down to his ratings, I still have Bordick and Anderson.Thoughts??

So, in essence you're saying I should play Houston tonight without Mackowiak and Wells?

OK, well adding Mack doesn't seem like a great solution to second base. How's that?

Yeah, that's true an "E" rating stinks, but he is decent at LF and RF with an "A" throwing arm. So, basically I could use him off the bench as well or replace him with Bordick a "B" rating at 2B late in the game when I'm ahead.

I'll go on with the Houston series and keep that one in the back of my mind. Thanks for the response, you must be my only reader.

I suppose you're going to tell me that picking up a depressed Bubba Trammel was the right thing to do. Bah.

Well, I thought he had more promise than Mabry, but the jury is still out. I was thinking Mackowiak would look better.

We press on!

Saturday 5/29/2004 :
Henry Blanco was sent down from the active roster to AAA Memphis.
Brent Mayne was promoted from AAA Memphis to the active roster.
Dee Haynes has been released.

Blanco was hitting 0.071, but he's rated an "A" at catcher, so I'll send him to the minors in case of an injury.

You mean, you could have signed John Franco? What's wrong with you??

Imagine that, Rick Reed refusing assignment.
