Hubris does not mean pride, at least in Greek. In my lexicon it is translated as "wantonness, wanton violence, insolence." Second definition is "lewdness." After that, there are some horse and legal usages. It may mean "pride" in English, but it never meant or implied that in Greek. |

I honestly wonder if Bubba still checks in on this thread periodically.

I posted quite a few pages ago, but it is insane. I have enjoyed this thread so much that it is simply unbelievable. To all the FOFC community congrats cuz the thread is worth more than the game itself.

Maybe this game wouldn't have gone south if the original gold master wasn't destroyed in a munitions fire at the Parthenon a thousand years ago. EDIT: This is my first work using the GIMP 2. Damn, that was difficult. So many things that i could do so easily in photoshop created a hassle to do in the GIMP. Last edited by aran : 02-28-2006 at 07:33 PM. |

As a side note, I had a horrible dream last night and I woke up to Antmeister's captivating song. Our little girl said, "Daddy's horrible voice gave mommy a horrible nightmare".
Kids say the darndest things don't they? Heh, I'm messing with you Ant, it was freaking AWESOME!! Last edited by Lorena : 02-28-2006 at 07:54 PM. |

Could someone please Ping Bubba? I'm worried I'm wearing my welcome rather thin, so I better not instigate anything by pinging him
I just miss his wonderful posts

I'm reading this thread in dual-mode. I'm up to page 24, yet have been reading the end since page 36 or so.
Lucky for me, no pudding when I listened to antmeister's song. Pure brilliance.

Man.. I stopped working at about 4:00... there has been a page and a half and 2,500 views since then... there must be f5 keys crying in pain across the world..
Pure Genius ant... and all of the graphics guys... the weird thing about this thread is it is really bringing out some creative talent on FOFC that I had no idea about... QS and JG limmericking... BG's photoshoping... CW's photoshopping.. more masterpieces from cuervo... i know others have done photoshopping that i missed... TZ's jokes over on MF... It's great how we can come together as a community and create such a masterpiece.

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=hubris I find it difficult to belive that the word hubris in the English language would be used so extensively in conjunction with the ancient Greeks unless the word had origins in that language. |

I know I'm very late to reply to this but just got to sit down in front of the PC at home and this was posted during my commute home. Antmeister, you magnificent bastard! I just can't stop laughing, the logos coming down and then up, that was just great! Dear God, my side, it hurts And then, I looked a couple posts down and there was the "LOADING GAEM" screenshot, woah, there I went again... woah, laughing is great! FM

It does come from a Greek word, but the word NEVER meant pride in that language. That is a relatively recent mis-interpretation of Greek philosophy/theology, which I also remember hearing in high school. Not one classics scholar in ten would back that up, though. If you don't believe me, consult some Greek dictionaries. The one I have is from Oxford press. |

I think "insolence" (from the definition you dug up, st. c) is likely the bridge between your perspectives -- the connotation of being disrespectful or arrogant isn't all that far of what we might now call "pride." I would suggest that might be a fair trace of the word history. |

I think that makes sense. I was taught that hubris means suffering from excess pride which means something different than being proud. |
