SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- A former Boiling Springs High School teacher was arrested after she had a sexual relationship with a student, the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.
She was released on $10,000 bond Wednesday night.
Abby McElhenny is charged with sexual battery of a student 16 or 17 years of age.
Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said McElhenny was spotted by friends of the teen's family holding hands at a local restaurant and Spartanburg's annual Spring Fling festival.
Wright said the boy's mother checked her son's cellphone after he was caught in a lie about spending the night with a friend. He said the mother noticed that hundreds of texts were exchange between her son's phone and another number. He said the mother then had a friend call the number and pretend to sell McElhenny a newspaper subscription. He said that is how the mother figured out who her son was texting.
Wright said the boy's mother then turned the evidence she gathered over to the Sheriff's Office.
McElhenny, a Spanish teacher and boys and girls swim coach, resigned from her job Tuesday, according to Spartanburg County School District 2.
The relationship happened sometime between Dec. 25 and May 16, Wright said.
McElhenny turned herself in to law enforcement Wednesday afternoon.

A middle school teacher who was fired after students learned that she had appeared in pornography has lost her appeal to return to the classroom, her lawyer said Tuesday. A three-judge panel unanimously decided that Stacie Halas, 32, was unfit for the classroom. Halas was fired in April from her job as a science teacher at Haydock Intermediate School in Oxnard, Calif., after online, pornographic videos of her were discovered by students and teachers.

"Although (Halas') pornography career has concluded, the ongoing availability of her pornographic materials on the Internet will continue to impede her from being an effective teacher and respected colleague," Judge Julie Cabos-Owen wrote in a 46-page decision issued Friday by the Commission on Professional Competence.

Halas was continually deceitful about her nine-month career in the adult video industry before she went to work at the school, the decision said.

Her lawyer, Richard Schwab, said Halas had tried to be honest but was embarrassed by her previous experience in adult videos.

"Miss Halas is more than just an individual fighting for her job as a teacher," he said Tuesday. "I think she's representative of a lot of people who may have a past that may not involve anything illegal or anything that hurts anybody."

Halas has been on administrative leave since a video surfaced in March. Student claims that the teacher was moonlighting as a porn star were initially dismissed after school officials said that they couldn't find any images of her on the Internet, but they were using the school's computers, which don't allow access to erotic adult content. Teachers then showed administrators downloads of Halas' sex videos from their smartphones.


In hearings, former assistant principal Wayne Saddler testified that, at the start of one sex video, Halas talked about being a teacher, and he felt that her effectiveness in the classroom had been compromised. After rumors of her performance surfaced, profanity was etched on Halas' classroom window, a teacher testified.

Schwab has said Halas did not star in pornographic movies while teaching in any district. He said that she took parts only during an eight-month period from 2005 to 2006 because of financial problems after her boyfriend abandoned her.

District superintendent Jeff Chancer applauded the commission's ruling. Halas' decision to "engage in pornography was incompatible with her responsibilities as a role model for students and would present an insurmountable, recurring disruption to our schools should she be allowed to remain as a teacher," Chancer said in a statement.

Physical adolescence is occurring earlier and earlier, but there's significant research to indicate that psychological/emotional adolescence routinely goes into the early/mid 20s with females, and late 20s with males these days. And among the last things to mature in the brain are the risk-assessment/decision-making areas.

Biology trumps common sense quite a bit. I bet most people had a crush on a teacher at one time or another, and probably flirted with the teacher too. Things can happen when you have physically mature 16-18 year olds with young 20-somethings. You get young people together and you never know what might happen.

When I was in high school, we'd have teacher aides who were in college studying to be teachers, and that was worse. They usually got hit on quite a bit. We had one male teacher's aide all the girls drooled over and flirted with him all the time.

I have less understanding when the 42-year-old tries to give a 12-year-old a BJ.
