I had it the first 10-8, then 2 and 4 to Edgar, 3 and 5 to Maynard. That would have been 48-46 Maynard, IMO.

this is exactly the same way i would have scored it...annoyed that i stayed up til after 1 am to see a draw, but i honestly dont have a problem with the result...if you want to outpoint the champion, you have to dominate, like Sonnen was against Silva...you cant leave it that close or the tendency is to go with the champion...that has been the "rule" in boxing for as long as i can remember, and the same theory goes for mma. i also thought there was gonna be a stoppage in the first, but frankie never took more than 3 or 4 shots without getting up, and they were never unchallenged...he was covering up well enough that even though he was getting tagged, he wasnt defenseless...again, i dont have a problem with the champion getting the benefit of the doubt there. |

So it is rumored that it'll be Randy vs Machida at 129 in Toronto. Assuming GSP/Shields is on that card too, it's going to be a huge fucking lineup.

yeah, That is official as far as I know. Additionally, Dana has said that Pettis has to wait for the rematch too. So you were right Danny.

Yeah I figured. He actually said it'd be Pettis/Edgar at the presser then a few hours later changed his mind. It seems like the only right thing to do. Hopefully neither guy is banged up too badly so they can do Edgar/Maynard III in like May. |

I know they are both elite fighters but I seriously have zero interest in watching Edgar and Maynard go five more rounds.

This is how I saw it too - Maynard won the first 10-8, and the third, but Edgar got 2 & 4. The 5th was tight, and could have gone either way, so 48-46 Maynard or 47-47 were both easily understandable. but 48-46 Edgar? How on earth did they guy see him win the 3rd? I was expecting a majority decision or majority draw, but it sets up a rematch nicely!

I just can't muster up any excitement over either one of those guys. Plus I think you're fucking Pettis who is never gonna be hotter than he is right now. He either waits 8 or 9 months or goes into a match that can only hurt his value. I was surprised you watched this one honestly. |

Was the right decision even if the scoring itself was jacked up, so we lucked out for once. Maynard takes 1st 10-8 and the 3rd, Frankie gets other 3 rounds. 5th was a tossup but I think he edged it out.
Even with a draw I say you tell Maynard tough luck and give Pettis the shot. This isn't a normal situation, they're trying to unify so do that immediately. Let Gray get first dibs at winner. Not how it works unfortunately. I almost wish we would get an Edgar/Guida match just for the hilarity of the amount of movement we would see. I thought overall it was a pretty good card. I think Vera is about due to get cut, he showed some good standup again but just looked like he had no interest in the fight beyond that. I'm not sure what they do with him at this point? That was a nasty broken nose also, ouch. I think Rampage vs. Thiago Silva would be a fun matchup to see soon. Really disappointed Cain will be out 8-10 months now..seems like the HW title is defended once a year anymore, annoying. |

The result of that fight was so ugly in terms of effort and nose, it made me question ego in sports. Like, even if you lose in the biggest football game of the year, you're still essentially wearing a costume identical to the other 64 guys who lost, in a fashion similar to all the losses that came before and after, and yet plenty of self-annointed tough dudes are repeatedly brought to tears by losing a team game played with a ball. Counter that with the ability to smile and laugh off spending 15 minutes alone in your underwear, in the middle of a cage, as some dude spanks, then bitch-slaps you in front of millions of viewers, until your nose migrates to the other side of your face. I dunno that either is more or less 'correct', but it sure is an interesting contrast.

It is really hard to avoid MMA spoilers these days (for me at least), as there seems to be a particular brand of asshole MMA fan that absolutely delights in flooding the torrent sites with both fake .avis and filling the comments/forums with spoilers. On the other hand, it's hard to complain too much that "these motherfuckers (who likely paid full price for the event) are spoiling my regular attempts to circumvent copyright law!!"....but they are!

Strikeforce today is expected to announce the quarterfinals of a planned eight-man tournament, and its remaining matchups have filled out.
In addition to previously announced matchups of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Antonio Silva and Andrei Arlovski vs. Sergei Kharitonov, a third bracket featuring Strikeforce champ Alistair Overeem (34-11 MMA, 3-0 SF) vs. Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1 MMA, 3-0 SF) is on tap, and a fourth targets Josh Barnett (26-5 MMA, 0-0 SF) vs. Brett Rogers (11-2 MMA, 2-2 SF). It is unknown whether the quarterfinal will put Overeem's belt on the line. The new matchups are expected to take place in March, though a date and venue have not yet been set, sources said. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the remaining matchups are "not confirmed," though he said Monday that an announcement is forthcoming on the tournament. The Strikeforce Heavyweight World Grand Prix is planned as a three-stage, single elimination tournament slated to begin Feb. 12 at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, N.J. The event features the first and second bracket of the tournament with Emelianenko vs. Silva and Arlovski vs. Kharitonov. The tournament marks the return of Emelianenko, who sat on the shelf for the second half of 2010 as Strikeforce, Showtime and M-1 Global re-negotiated a three-fight contract he originally signed in August 2009. Meanwhile, Overeem returns to action after knocking out Todd Duffee to win the DREAM interim heavyweight title at Dynamite!! 2010. Barnett is expected to go before the California State Athletic Commission next month to address concerns stemming from a denial of license he received in July 2009 in the wake of a positive test for performance enhancers. He signed a new contract with Strikeforce this past March. MMAjunkie.com will have more updates on this story as they become available. |

On the subject of hilariously bad MMA tattoos: There are so many bad ones, that now when I can't make out a tattoo, whatever my mind invents in it's place is just assumed to be ridiculously horrible. Like, I still don't know exactly what's on Chris Leben's back, but if it's NOT a decapitated samurai holding his own head, then he should get some more detail work done. Likewise, I couldn't make out what the hell was on Thiago Silva's back, but I think it was Neptune, with the face of Bob Marley, floating over a map of Texas.

A bit late to the dance here, but I agree with everything that's been said so far regarding the scoring. I had it 47-47 but the 5th could have easily been a toss-up. I know the 10-10 round is even more rare than a 10-8, but neither guy did enough to win that round and 10-10 was probably the proper score (ultimately resulting in a 48-47 Maynard win). The judges that scored it in Edgar's favour probably gave him the round as he is the champ and I have no problem with that. But the 48-46 Edgar guy, he was way out to lunch.
And colour me skeptical regarding the SF heavyweight tourney, my money is on the tournament not be finished until 2012, if at all. Fedor hasn't fought more than twice in one year since 2005. Overeem has only fought for Strikeforce three times in the past 4 1/2 years. And what's with the fucking seeding? Fedor, Bigfoot, Werdum and Overeem all on the same side of the bracket? That's arguably your top 4 seeds right there. I guess the argument is that it gets you three good matchups but I'd personally still like to see the best guys fight in the semi's and the final. |

I think the seeding is due to the fact they want the quarter and semifinals to be title fights and therefore wanted the semi matchup to be someone worthy.
Now no clue if they intend to not have the final be for it or what, but I have serious doubts about how this will go anyway. |

In other news, I am loving the rumors about Pettis and Guida getting together. That would be a fight I would like to see. Guida would be considered very dangerous for Pettis as such an experienced fighter who has already reinvented his cage game.

Card looks great tonight. The top three fights all look to be good fights. If I had to pick an upset of those fights, I'd go with Forrest over Franklin, but I'm pulling for Richie in that fight.

It had so much potential. But in all, it was a pretty poor show all around. Fitch/Penn doesn't get me all that excited either. Next weekend's Strikeforce card does though.
