I know I'm just an old man but why does a wild card game between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati have to start at 8:10? You cannot tell me the west coast will care that much that this game couldn't start at 7:10.

That was really cool. Glad MLB.com had a breaking news banner so I caught the 9th inning. Crazy ending.

Never cared for Pendlefuck (even back to his days with the Cards), but that was just based on watching him on TV.

He's a considerably bigger prick in person (or at least was back in the 90s).

Congrats to the Royals. Missed out on the playoffs, but had their highest win total in nearly 20 years. That's something to be excited about.

Were the Biogenesis suspensions a certain number of games or the regular season? I assume a certain number of games since Cruz in playing for Texas tonight. Tonight would still be considered the regular season, right?

The suspensions were for 50 games, and were given out prior to game 112. Since tonight is game 163, his suspension is over.

Yes. I think it was 50 games.

50 games. Braun got more as a slap on the wrist for his prior sins. He also started his suspension sooner than the rest.

All of the suspensions, including Braun's, are over at this point.

Good game for Price and the Rays! Now to beat the Indians, another team that hasn't lost in weeks.

(FWIW: The Rays, Indians, and Rangers combined for a 26-4 record the last 10 games of the season. That's how you finish.)

Pirates fans making stupid plays on back to back pitches. Good thing for them it wasn't a 1 run game. That guy in the outfield would have needed to move after the game if it had cost them.

Not really..

Should be quite a series vs the Cardinals!

The thing about the 2nd WC is that most teams pitch their #1.. should be an advantage for the Division winners.

You know what's weird? The Rays are in a better position, if they win the wild card game, than most wild card teams would be. The off days plus Price going in the tiebreaker means he'll conceivably be available twice in the ALDS on full rest.

I know why Bud Selig etc are so desperate to put in the extra days in advance instead of potentially messing up the ALDS schedule, but competitively it would make much more sense to have the WC game the day after the season, and a day before the ALDS starts (and then bump it by a day in the rare cases of ties). As an added bonus, it'd probably also help avoid having World Series games in November.

In this case, I think Price is lined up for game 2 and potentially relief in game 5 on 3 days rest, but yeah.... go Indians.

Cincinnati cans can look at it like this. Without this 1 game WC game, you had no chance to get to the NLDS after the regular season. Last year, I would have had an issue had the A's beaten the Orioles in the WC game since the Orioles would have been the WC the old way.

It is cool to see the Pirates back in the playoffs.

It also doesn't seem right after 162 games, a team that finished 2nd in a division can knock off the team that finished 1st in that same division - so this is what we get due to the abomination which is the Wild Card.

Well the wild card is a necessity unless they go to 2 divisions. I don't have an issue with a 2nd place team beating a 1st place team in a longer series. A lot of times the division is separated by only a few games. Over 162 game season that could be because a key player was hurt, a couple bad calls, etc...

I hate this one and done where something fluky can happen that decides a season. Can't wait until there is a botched call in one of these games.

I have no problem with it. Something needed to be done to devalue the WC berth and give extra credit to the division winners/#1 seed. I'd even be in favor of some of the "more radical" proposals where the #1 seed potentially had 4 or even all 5 ALDS games at home as their reward. Making it a 3 game vs. a 1-game series isn't really enhancing the odds of the other team winning (I think the stats geeks say you'd need something like a Best of 131 to truly decide with confidence between two teams who are relatively close to each other in the standings,) and playoff baseball already exacerbates the value of 1-2 dominant starters and your 2-3 best relievers instead of the depth you need over a 162 game season.

You realize that the playoffs are a crapshoot anyways. Even a 7 game series can't show the results of a 162 game season - fluky plays happen which can decide a series. And if it helps, think of the WC game as a Game 7 .
