People should not be expecting Madden style arcade play. I have always said that arcade mode in Maximum-Football resembles a slimmed down version of NFL Fever 2000.
OK, now he had to go and make things personal.

Slimmed-down version of NFL Fever 2000? Try scraped to the mother-fucking bone you hack! Fever 2000 wasn't the greatest football game ever, but don't even think of putting Maximum Football in the same sentence with it.

Grrrrr....

Ok, so I spent some time looking through dictionaries this afternoon. I find "insolence to the gods" or something similiar ONLY in English dictionaries, and the references are all 20th century.

There is nothing remotely comparable in Greek dictionaries (although I didn't consult MODERN Greek dictionaries.)

Here is a passage from Sophocles' Ajax:

Quote:
Athena: Loook, then, at such things, and never yourself utter an arrogant word against the gods, nor assume conceit because you outweigh another in strength or in profusion of great wealth. Know that a single day brings down or raises up again all mortal things,, and the gods love those who think sensibly and detest offenders!

That's translated from a Greek passage that does not use the word hubris. If it shared that meaning alluded to before with the English language, this is a passage where you would expect to see it.

I'm not sure what to say, other than I'm not sure we're on the same page. I cannot find a definitive source that says, "Yes, Hubris was a word in ancient Greek," but I find numerous references to the greek word Υβρις, which is Greek for hubris apparently.

I find it difficult to believe that the word is not a Greek word considering there was a Greek goddess called Hubris/Hybris, who was according to multiple sources the embodiment of insolence and lack of restraint.

Given the history of etymology in English dictionaries, I find it extremely difficult to belive that they are all wrong when they say that the word hubris does not have Greek roots and that it is merely a 20th centruy misconception that the word hubris as a Greek word is a myth.

But it would certainly be hubris for me to suggest that with any absolute certainty.

It was a Greek word. What I'm saying is that the meaning it has picked up in English (which I could find no evidence it meant anything other than 'rude, snotty' prior to about 1900) is not there in the way it was used in Greek. If you look through Greek texts carefully (perseus project might be useful if you want to spend some time on this - www.perseus.tufts.edu ) you will quickly realize this.

The Greeks said 'hubris' (which you spelled correctly with greek characters, Υβρις, pronounced the same in both languages) most typically meant 'violent.'

If I had to guess how it picked up the meaning 'pride, insolence to God,' I would say it had to do with Christian thinkers imposing their values on the Greek texts - trying to add something that wasn't there. The rage of Achilles was not directed at God/Gods - it was directed at his fellow men.

No, all this thread needs is for something else to happen over on the matrix games forums. The fuel so far provided for this fire has been all used up, and it's up to Daivd and the crew to provide more.

I agree, though I think that the running discussion of the meaning of words in ancient Greek has been an underrated part of this thread. I take part of the blame for yesterday--I tried to force the hot cartoon woman draft in the middle of the thread, and that did not pan out. I think that you have to just let the thread come to you--you can't force it.

That said, I'm glad to know that I am not the only person who thinks of little blue creatures whenever rkmsuf posts.

I'm guessing, but it's probably because he wrote in in DirectX8, and some of the older video cards don't have the capabilities/drivers to support some of the features in DirectX8. It really doesn't matter how many animations he has, if the beer tent uses some new T&L features from DirectX it'll probably cause a problem on older machines.

How about throwing some crayons in the case so you can color in the dvd front? I want female and Area 51 alien player animations. Where's my Johnny Rico Flip 6 3 hole play? How about Black Sunday blimps that terrorize your players? I want my running back to pull out a gun, run down the sidelines, capping players in the knee caps and ultimately blow his head off when surrounded.. Thats what I want..

Here is my post:

Why do you need such a powerful graphics card when statements like this are made?

Status: online I've touched on this a few times in the past weeks.

Due mostly to the lack of animations, "madden like" jukes, spins, and other special moves are not included in the game. I have a side step animation and that's pretty much it. If you're playing in arcade mode and your controller has triggers, you can use those to side step left and right.

People should not be expecting Madden style arcade play. I have always said that arcade mode in Maximum-Football resembles a slimmed down version of NFL Fever 2000.

If the arcade mode will resemble a slimmed down version of NFL Fever 2000, what is so graphic intensive about it? Thanks.
The 6600 is not a "powerful" card. It's more the standard run-of-the-mill "get this if you are buying a new video card today and want a good fast card without breakign the bank" video card. That advice wasn't saying "you need at least this card to run Maximum Football" but rather "you want this card if you're buying a new video card / computer and want to play 3D games on it".

(I can't believe I've been forced to step up and defend Matrix twice because people are LOOKING for bad things to say about the game and aren't reading what Matrix is actually SAYING).
