In the book "Think Like a Freak" (from the writers of Freakonomics), they talk about penalty shots in soccer. They showed that kicks right down the middle have the highest chances for success. The main reason is because players rarely take that shot.

The reason they don't take the shot is because of how it looks. If you are going to fail, you want to make it seem like you tried to do something. If the Chile player ends the game by kicking it straight and the ball gets saved, he probably can't get on the plane to go home. He smashes it off the post and it's "well, you gave it a good shot kid, good job"

Now, which Brazil will we see next?

The bruised, battered, tired, carded thumped Brazil that is too tired to play against the winner of the Urugyuay-Colombia game?

Or the energized, enobled, and juvenated team that uses this as a catalyst to push on and wake up.

Jara with an own goal and a missed penalty, Pinillo hits the bar and misses the penalty. Can´t have a more miserable roll of the dice than those 2 guys

Great game between Brazil and Chile! Chile were unlucky in penalties (Julio Caesar was pretty great though), but the better team won, IMO. Brazil was unlucky in not getting another goal during the run of play (Hulk was trying to make up for his error in letting that Chile goal go by himself during that second half)!

That statement by Suarez gets the perjury treatment in any court of law...

Go Columbia ! Their offense is also quite simply very fun to watch.

For the life of me I can't work out why he's said that: surely not even Uruguayans buy it? From what I've seen the Uruguayans have accepted that Suarez did something wrong, but that the penaly was in their opinion way OTT...

Just makes him look even more ridiculous

It is really getting old watching the players that go down always looking for the ref to card the other player. They called the foul, you got the free kick, now STFU and play the game.

Rodriguez is gonna get PAID!

He would look mighty fine in an Arsenal jersey, but that'll never happen.

Where is James Rodriguez in 2020?

In my FM2014 dynasty, here he is:

29 years old, 7.75mill value, plays for Lazio, but he hasn't won a division or international competition since he left Porto.

And FM Scout has him at....163/176 current/potential

Oh, best year was 2015-16 for Monaco, he had a 7.54 rating and 7 goals and 5 assists in 32 games.

Brazil x Chile :

Brazilian anthem is made of 4 parts. Melody of 1st and 2nd part is repeated through the 3rd and 4th part. In sports competition the 1st part and 4th part were played since ever. From last year stupid FIFA decided that 1st part only was enough. It really makes no sense lyrics wise, and was a rape melodically speaking. And if everybody stays there singing the rest, is just plain stupid and boring that FIFA still tries to 'win" a couple of minutes.

Hulk was by far the best brazilian player in the field but by 10 minutes of 2nd half I was telling my inlaw that he would miss his PK. Those things just happen like a soap opera, it was just obvious. The denied goal the hit on the biceps was not so apparent in the replay to me, even though my 1st impression was of a handball, but the yellow was just plain stupid.

Felipao is just lost, stuck with his old philosophies and "friendships". We just cant see him being able to do the tactics or lineup changes this team need. We would have only left the atmosphere and team spirit to drive us forward, but the team is just full of stupid whiners crying every game, no one see they pulling it.

Brazil was really not able to win this game. Chile was, but decided not to, so just **** and go home.

The guys in charge of the Uruguayan team are clearly going for an us against the world mentality. Uruguay has a small population, and even with Suarez they were going to be seriously up against it when playing the big teams.

I would not take anything I hear from the Uruguayan camp too seriously until after they are eliminated from the World Cup.
