I really want Brazil to fall short, and I fear this might be a wake-up call that gets them back on track - though I really think Brazil's forward situation is kind of a mess.

Columbia needs to not get too elated and they can do this. If they're reading their own press clippings before the next game, Brazil will take care of business.

I don't know. They looked pretty bad in the group stage and it didn't wake them up. Maybe they aren't that good?

Brazil's offense seems to be, get the ball to Neymar and hope he's magical. There's very little of the fluid offense I expect from Brazil.

But today, it was Hulk who was the best player in the side.

The main issue with the team is that whether its Fred or Jo, they can't get good striker play opposite Neymar.

Suarez's influence is already being seen

England fan has ear bitten off following Uruguay defeat - ESPN FC

Or did he hear about it and fall off the biting sobriety wagon.

Ah, maybe we are just too demanding, but that old fluid brazlian offense is gone for a long time now. Last time the team reallyexcited me was 98, with the esception of 2005 confederations cup, specially the final against Argentina
Last WC I actually rooted against Brazil since day 1, if we were champions the stupid Dunga mentality would be dominant for a decade or 2. The 82 loss to italy was much more painful than the WC loss by itself. The mentality of "joga bonito"(play beautifully) doesnt win games or tourneys took over here, as if you had to play badly to win. deep sigh

Fred aint that bad, but he is a target man, but the ball just dont reach him.

Colombia still dont faced a team that good, but they definitely have an upside. I dont remember of any other team that played consistently all games through the WC.

2002 was not all that different. Only the wing backs were in better form and Ronaldo was up front to give Rivaldo an outlet.

Also, i think you complained about the team being whiny and not a unit, right? Where are you getting this from ? I was under the impression that this was still a strong suit. Oscar and Hulk are killing themselves defensively and even Neymar is working his butt off mostly.

Gustavo missing the QF is a big, big loss. He is the 2nd most important player after Neymar, his defensive positioning has been flawless and he has corrected about a million mistakes made by Marcelo and especially Dani Alves. Also doing it without much help from the other defensive midfielder (Fernandinho was not much better than a clearly out of shape Paulinho)

I thought there was a lot of selfish play yesterday by Brazil, players keeping the ball too much when facing tackles and such. The except was Willian who was great after being subbed in and really pushed others with unselfish play.

So, ESPN warns us they have no control over the homophobic chants of Mexican fans, then gives us two announcers with Spanish accents that at times are hard to follow (for me).

Why couldn't Ruud Van Nistelroy do the commentary on this one? At least I can follow what he's saying without any effort.

that dutch tactical scheme is complicated as shit to pull off, for that alone i have a ton of respect for this team. Doing a lot with actually not all that much talent (aside from Robben and Van Persie this is not a team littered with great talent, imo)

ok, that might count as a foul (my first impression was that the ball was played, too)

Why no crowd scenes from Amsterdam at half time?

I don't like having pro-Mexico crammed down my throat.

ESPN has the rights to all Mexico WC qualifiers, so that's probably why.

that manager has no connection at all to the Portugal team if i´m not mistaken, just to point that out.

Just going to guess that in the US ESPN has just a bit larger Mexican audience than a Dutch audience. Wild guess there.

Yeah, but it makes up for a likely missed PK call earlier.

Well, their faith in Rafa Marquez killed them. Dude was getting killed all game long and finally cost them. I was rooting for them to win, but I am now happily dancing on their grave - especially Rafa Marquez - who was the biggest piece of garbage i've ever seen play for the NY Red Bulls.

Holy shit watch soccer much?!? That was not that bad a flop yes but the Mexico player did try to impede him enough to trip him. Plenty of worse calls went uncalled already or the Dutch.

Way to go Netherlands!! Wow, what an ending. I do feel bad for the Mexican goalie though. Really nothing he could have done on either goal. He played very well in all their games. Happy for the Dutch.
