First Round Highlights

A simply amazing first round for the top 4 seeds in each bracket. Only 1 team, a 4 seed was beaten and failed to advance past the first round. That unlucky team was #4 Hawaii in the West Bracket. They were taken down by #13 Tennessee Martin.

Other notables to advance: #5 Wichita State, #6 Princeton, #9 Sacramento State, #5 Texas Southern, #10 Grambling, #6 South Alabama, #11 Nicholls State.

Second Round highlights

The second round was not so kind to the top seeds, particularly in the West bracket. #1 Loyola lost to #8 Montana to start things off. The other #1 seeds did survive.

In the Midwest region we lost a 2 seed as #2 IUPUI was taken down by #7 Chicago State.

We lost half of the 3 seeds in this round too, both in the West and Midwest. #3 New Mexico State was upset by #6 Princeton in the West and #3 Arkansas State was beaten by #6 San Diego in the Midwest.

We lost another 4 seed as well in this round. #4 Air Force was beaten by #5 North Texas.

Other notables to advance: #5 Wichita State

Finally, in the East, #1 Duquesne does get through by beating #5 North Texas. They will face #2 Brown who got by #3 Bethune Cookman.

Elite Eight Highlights

Starting in the West again, #2 Oakland got by #8 Montana and they are the first Final Four team of the year.

In the Midwest, #4 Santa Clara kept the momentum up after beating the 1 seed to knock out the upstart 7 seed Chicago State.

In a battle of former champs, #2 St. Bonaventure beats #4 Santa Clara to advance to the Final Four.

Finally, in the East, #1 Duquesne returns to the Final Four again after taking care of #2 Brown.

Final Four

First, Southern Illinois beats Tennessee State for the NIT title.

The Match Ups

#2 Oakland vs. #2 St. Bonaventure
#4 St. Mary’s vs. #1 Duquesne

In game 1, Oakland just whipped up on the Bonnies every which way they could. The final score was 97-59. Oakland was led by a trio of players. PG Chauncey Bronson, a Senior and ranked #89 in 1944 scored a game high 23 points and had 9 assists. SG Ken Schneider, another Senior ranked 88 overall in 1941 scored 22 and yet another Senior SF David Smiley added 20. Smiley was ranked #119 in 1941.

In game 2, St. Mary’s went to SF Charles Sprouce time and time again. The Junior SF responded with 19 points and 9 rebounds to pace the team. But St. Mary’s had no answer for Duquesne’s Center, Junior Michael Houk. Houk has declared for the draft and is making the most of his final games. He put up an amazing 30 points tonight to help Duquesne to the 78-75 victory.

In the Finals, Duquesne kept going back inside to their star Center, Michael Houk and again he came up big with another 26 points. Oakland’s fearsome threesome from the first game was held to 32 points combined, but their inside game came to life tonight. C Erik Diaz and PF Mark Radtke combined for 29 points and 23 rebounds, each with a double double. Oakland had just enough in the end to just get by in this game and pull out a 79-77 victory to claim their first National Championship!

Schexnayder is a true freshman and was ranked #183 in the recruiting pool last year. He averaged just over 10 points per game and just over 3 assists.

All Scott Black did was take an Arkansas Little Rock team that has NEVER been to the NCAA tournament, and only had 1 NIT appearance in their history, to the NCAA’s and even win a game!

Sweet Sixteen Highlights

Two more #1 seeds fall in this round. In the West, #1 Northern Arizona falls again, this time to #12 IPFW. They will face #6 Texas Southern.

In the Midwest, #4 St. Mary’s upset #1 Drake to advance. They will face off against #2 Sacramento State, who got by #6 IUPUI.

In the South, #9 Southern Illinois continues to advance by beating #4 New Mexico State. They will play #3 Eastern Washington, who beat #7 Nicholls State.

In the East, #1 Duquesne again advances to the Elite Eight by beating #4 Coppin State. They play #3 Montana, who beat #10 St. Bonaventure.

Elite Eight Highlights

We have a surprise Final Four this year. I doubt anybody would have picked 2 of these teams, never mind all 4.

In the West, #6 Texas Southern advances with a win over #12 IPFW.

In the Midwest, #2 Sacramento State beats #4 St. Marys to advance.

In the South, it is #9 Southern Illinois over #3 Eastern Washington.

And in the East, #1 Duquesne gets knocked off by #3 Montana.

In game 1, Texas Southern had Senior PG John Hewitt lead the team with 16 points and 6 assists. They also had a freshman SG come off the bench to keep them in the game. Bobby Roan scored 12 points in 17 minutes of play. Southern Illinois just had too much talent though. Sophomore SF Bryce Hall led the team with 16 points and PF Nathan Taylor, a senior added 13 with 10 rebounds. They also had another rplayer with 10 boards and 2 other score in double figures. This extra talent led Southern Illinois to a 68-63 victory.

Game 2 was all Sacramento State. They ran away with a 15 point victory, thanks in large part to PF Ellsworth Goodwin, a senior. He scored 20 points and pulled in 9 boards. They also had 3 other players score in double figures and 5 other players contribute in the scoring column.

The finals was once again all Sacramento State. They led from start to finish and ended up winning by 19, 69-50. Ellsworth again had a nice game with 10 points and 10 boards, but SG Dewitt Goldman, just a junior, led the team in scoring with 14. Sacramento State wins its first ever National Title!

Coaching Changes

Denver fired their coach, Tony Jones. They went out and hired Oscar Williams from Southeast Missouri State. Oscar has a 138-131 record as a head coach and took SE MO State to the NIT last year.

Oakland’s Mark Meredith retired two years after a Title and just after being named Coach of the Year. Oakland hired Kevin Shoop from Southern U to replace him. Kevin has a career record of 160-198, but has gotten Southern to the Post Season every year for the last 4 seasons.

quite possibly. Although they do have a couple of titles, they are always a 1 seed and lately have flamed out early.

Fuck! 19-10 and we didn't make the dance...

Did UTEP at least make the NIT, Marm?

Long live UTEP's relatively new coach!

I have a good swimming in the Rio Grande story which I won't share here and continue to threadjack poor Marm, but I still find sand in my clothes after we moved 24 years ago

First Round Highlights

All of the #1 seeds advanced pretty easily this year.

The #2 seeds struggled though. In the South, #15 Georgia Southern beat #2 Penn. In the West, #15 Cal State Northridge beat #2 St. Mary’s.

We also lost a 3 seed in the first round. In the East, #14 Canisius beat #3 Fordham.

The four seeds did just as bad as the 2 seeds this year. It is not the return of Grambling either. #13 Georgetown beat them. In the West, #13 Marshall beat #4 Western Illinois.

Other notables: #5 Air Force, #5 Sacramento State, #11 Wyoming, #9 Southern Illinois, #5 New Mexico State, #11 Wichita State, #10 Stony Brook, #6 Arkansas State

Round Two highlights

The Northern Arizona curse is becoming legendary. They fail to make the sweet sixteen this year as #8 Hofstra beats them. The rest of the #1 seeds advance.

The two remaining 2 seeds advanced.

We lost two of our remaining three #3 seeds in this round. In the West, #6 Chicago State beat #3 Princeton. In the Midwest, #11 Wyoming beat #3 Yale.

We lost another 4 seed as well. #5 New Mexico State beat #4 Santa Clara in the South Region.

Other notables: #5 Air Force, #15 Cal State Northridge, #7 New Orleans, #14 Canisius

Sweet Sixteen Highlights

The West Bracket is already completely busted. #5 Air Force beats #8 Hofstra to advance to the Elite Eight. They will face #15 Cal State Northridge.

In the Midwest, we lose another 1 seed as #4 Loyola beats #1 Drake. They will play the 2 seed, Oakland, who got by #11 Wyoming.

In the South, #1 Duquesne moves on by beating New Mexico State. They face #7 New Orleans in the next round. They beat #3 Campbell to advance.

Finally, in the East, #1 Brown advances over #13 Georgetown. They will meet up with #2 Bethune, who got by #14 Canisius.

Elite Eight highlights

In the West, we get the highest seed ever to make the final four. #15 Cal State Northridge is playing like a top seed as they knock off #5 Air Force and make the Final Four!

In the Midwest, #2 Oakland will look for their 2nd title in 3 years as they beat #4 Loyola.

In the South, #1 Duquesne is back in the Final Four after they beat #7 New Orleans.

In the East, we have a #1/#2 matchup and #2 Bethune-Cookman is back in the final four after beating #1 Brown!

Also, I am itching to take over a team....would that ruin this dynasty for you guys, or should I get more history behind me?

Final Four

Youngston State beats Binghampton for the NIT title.

The Match Ups

#15 Cal State Northridge vs. #1 Duquesne
#2 Oakland vs. #2 Bethune

In game 1, you have to wonder how Cal State continues to do it! The answer is pretty simple, they have 2 studs. Senior PG Ed Neary was unstoppable. He was the #44 overall recruit as a JUCO in 1946. He went off for 28 points tonight. He had plenty of help from Senior C Jenaro Saez, ranked #192 in 1946, another JUCO. He scored 20 tonight. All that was almost not enough. Duquesne had Junior SF Dan Seem, ranked #45 in 1944. He scored 15 and grabbed 11 boards. He vows to be back here next year after a heart breaking 75-74 loss to the 15 seed.

Game 2 came down to a single factor. For both teams, the PG, SG, SF and PF all scored in double figures. For Bethune, their center scored 16, while the Oakland Center fouled out after just 10 minutes of playing time. The backup scored 2 in 21 minutes, including just 2 for 9 from the free throw stripe. Bethune took advantage and won this one 85-79.

The amazing run for Cal State came to an abrupt end early in the first half of the title game. They were dominated in every aspect of the game. It turned out to be the biggest blowout in Finals history. Bethune takes their second National Title with a 79-36 ass kicking of Cal State.

Crutchfield is just a Junior, but he has declared for the draft already. He only started 1 year in his career. He was ranked #41 overall in 1944.

Lin red shirted last year. He was ranked #102 overall in 1946.

Lieberman took Bethune to a National Title in his third year with the team. A no brainer decision there.

No issue here with you taking over a team. Take a Big 10 team and bring them to glory. Maybe that'll force Penn State to play better, though it hasn't helped in real life. That #53 class should help, though...

Hey marmel, i think you should take over a team...if you want a big challenge take over Arizona or Arizona State...it should be hell getting recruits with NAU there.

And would you also mind adding Missouri to the list of teams to follow...havent seen them in any poll/recruiting/anything...

Is the Big East crappy enough that you could take over Syracuse and have a good challenge leading them to the top? I remember seeing the conference somewhere in the middle during the first few years but I haven't seen mention of it much lately.

I am loving following along the way things are going now, but if you are itching to take over a team then go for it!

First Round Highlights

No problems for any of the #1 seeds.

Out of the four #2 seeds, I think it is fairly easy to predict which one went down in flames. Yep! #2 Northern Arizona lost to #15 Cincinnati in the West Region.

Also in the West, #3 Delaware State lost to #14 Washington. The rest of the 3 seeds advanced.

All of the 4 seeds advanced as well.

Other notables: #8 IUPUI, #5 St. Bonnie, #10 Yale, #8 UMKC, #10 Wyoming, #8 San Francisco, #10 Sacramento State, #11 Seton Hall, #10 Santa Clara, #14 Washington, #6 New Mexico State

Note: Penn State lost in the first round.

Second Round highlights

Today was not kind at all to the #1 seeds. We lost half of them! In the West, which is the big bracket buster region this year, #1 Duquesne lost to #8 San Diego State. In the East, #8 IUPUI beat #1 Brown.

The remaining 2 seeds all advanced.

The South Region saw us lose another 3 seed. #6 Marshall knocked off #3 Georgia State.

This round was also a disaster for the 4 seeds. We lost all but one of them. #4 Penn was the only one to survive. #12 IPFW beat #4 Portland in the West. #12 Brigham Young beat #4 Drake in the Midwest. #5 St. Bonnie beat #4 Coppin State in the East.

Other notables: #15 Cincinnati, #6 New Mexico State

The Match Ups

#6 New Mexico State vs. #4 Penn
#1 Fordham vs. #2 Pepperdine

Game 1 was a defensive battle. Only 1 player from each team really was able to get free and score. For New Mexico State it was SG Alonzo Edelstein. Alonzo is a sophomore and was ranked #25 overall in 1947. He scored a game high 16 points. For Penn it was Senior SG Gary Peach. Peach was ranked #179 overall in 1945. He scored 13 and had 9 boards from the SG spot. In the end it was New Mexico’s defense that propelled them to a 61-51 victory.

Game 2 was even more defensive. Fordham’s Senior C Keenan Munson had a great game with 12 points and 15 boards, but nobody else showed up for the #1 seed. Pepperdine had Senior SG Albert Jones, ranked #392 in 1944, playing out of positioon at the SF spot. He responded with just a game high 20 points in leading Pepperdine to the 58-48 victory.

You expected more defense in the finals and that is what we got. True Freshman PG Wyatt Keenan, ranked #44 overall in 1948 led the Pepperdine team with 16 points. SG Albert Jones added 14. New Mexico got another good performance out of Alonzo Edelstein. He had 14, but it was not enough as Pepperdine takes the National Championship, 67-59!

Man, the Lions can't get out the first round. Sounds like back when I was playing...except the year we beat UCLA.

Hey Marmel, ever thought of putting us in the game on the team we wanted to follow?
