Ok, I'm designing my nation state as we speak. I've got my national animal (Hippopotamus) and my currency (also, Hippopotami).
Now, I need a little help with other things. Government: oppressive, corrupt, psychotic, or evil? (I've always wanted to be a megalomaniacal dictator) And I'm still working on a name. EDIT: It should also be noted that my motto is: "It's my first real stab at cliched villainy." -Xanatos (from an episode of the cartoon Gargoyles) SI

Anybody who wants UN Endorsement and can reciprocate, let me know. I want to see if anything happens with a greater number of endorsements. Note on Rendland's page:

The Empire of The Afoci
"If not for jif, sack and a dog, man have nothing!" UN Category: Corporate Police State Civil Rights: Some Economy: Powerhouse Political Freedoms: Few Location: FOFC The Empire of The Afoci is a tiny, economically powerful nation, renowned for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 5 million are ruled with an iron fist by the corrupt, dictatorship government, which oppresses anyone who isn't on the board of a Fortune 500 company. Large corporations tend to be above the law, and use their financial clout to gain ever-increasing government benefits at the expense of the poor and unemployed. The tiny, pro-business government devotes most of its attentions to Law & Order, with areas such as Social Welfare and Religion & Spirituality receiving almost no funds by comparison. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 2%. A robust private sector is led by the Retail industry, followed by Cheese Exports and Pizza Delivery. Crime is a serious problem. The Afoci's national animal is the crawfish with lasers and its currency is the jif. Located in the FOFC.

I haven't seen anything about opening stores. I'd imagine the only way you can do it is go to one of the forums and post a RP about opening a fish store.

I gotta say, I'm less than impressed by their IRC chat. First, they spend about a half hour "softcore" cybering. Then some troll comes in, sees what's going on, and pushes it too far so they quickly turn on him ("we know how far to go, you went too far" but really translates to "blah. blah. blah. you're not one of us. blah. blah. blah."). The situation is complicated by the fact that none of the ops are awake. He, of course, proves to be a loser but the rest of chat proves to be a bunch of pretentious dolts who aren't smart enough to pull it off so they feed the troll by trying to sound self important and trying to show him how dumb he is.
I'm really hoping this is only the late night crowd. I was really looking to get some newbie help but there's no way I was going to do much delurking with what was going on in there. SI

The Rogue Nation of Ziggy Zagga
"What Smells?" UN Category: Corrupt Dictatorship Civil Rights: Below Average Economy: Reasonable Political Freedoms: Few Location: FOFC The Rogue Nation of Ziggy Zagga is a tiny, environmentally stunning nation, renowned for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, cynical population of 5 million are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet. The large government devotes most of its attentions to Law & Order, with areas such as Social Welfare and Religion & Spirituality receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 28%, but much higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Soda Sales. Crime is moderate. Ziggy Zagga's national animal is the human being, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the zit. |

Upon further review, it appears that this is a notation to let the nation seeing it know that when the UN is updated again the total number of endorsements is going to change. I had 21, with a notice about the nation having 22 at the next update, I now have 22...so I guess thats all it is?

The Dominion of Twisting Blades
"What did he say? Kill him!" Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 10 million are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources." The large, corrupt, moralistic government is effectively ruled by the Department of Law & Order, with areas such as Social Welfare and the Environment receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 24%. A robust private sector is led by the Uranium Mining, Information Technology, and Soda Sales industries. Citizens must pay to enjoy Twisting Blades's pristine beaches, the institution of marriage is held sacred and strictly enforced, the government extracts trade concessions from poor nations in exchange for humanitarian aid, and the country's famous rainforests are being bulldozed by the mining industry. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Twisting Blades's national animal is the monkey with a saber, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Colt. Twisting Blades is ranked 8th in the region and 13,260th in the world for Largest Soda Pop Sector.

The Dominion of Fer Deoda
"Cuir isteach" UN Category: Compulsory Consumerist State Civil Rights: Average Economy: Thriving Political Freedoms: Outlawed The Dominion of Fer Deoda is a small, economically powerful nation, remarkable for its absence of drug laws. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 9 million are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night. There is no government in the normal sense the word; however, a small group of community-minded, corrupt individuals concentrates mainly on Law & Order, although Commerce and Defence are on the agenda. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Automobile Manufacturing, Cheese Exports, and Retail industries. Punitive tariffs protect local industry, Animal Liberationists are regularly jailed, there have been reports of people marrying housepets, and bicyclists are banned from major roads. Crime is a problem. Fer Deoda's national animal is the bulldog, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the daghda. Jeesh, decide a few issues while not paying attention and I go from Iron Fist Consumerists to Compulsory Consumerist State and "there have been reports of people marrying housepets". |

OK, I've received two telegrams, both by the same person, here they are:
The Commonwealth of The Global Market Received: 69 minutes ago Hello, Great Delegate: I come to ask for your approval of the UN proposal entitled, “The GenetiCorp Convention”. This proposal is an attempt to further biotechnology while defending human rights and encouraging greater international cooperation. This bill also respects national sovereignty, a clause in it allowing a nation to override parts of the bill. The primary point of the resolution is an acknowledgement of the individual's OWNERSHIP over his or her genome. Note that this only means the genetic material within his or her body... it does not extend to your ability to enslave a clone, or your identical twin for that matter. I am aware that there are many problems with cloning and biotechnology at the moment. This is why we must allow the technology to advance further. Saying that this is a reason not to go forward is like if the Wright Brothers were to say that because something like September 11th might have happened, they shouldn't have invented the airplane. There is simply too much potential in this field to ignore it. I thank you for your time and consideration. Best of luck in all of your endeavors. Praetor Gunther Kreisau, Chairperson for the Office of Very Foreign Policy, Commonwealth of the Global Market AND The Commonwealth of The Global Market Received: 69 minutes ago Hello. Our current delegate, Mercurian, has recently banned three nations, one of which was in our region for several weeks, for endorsing me but refusing to endorse him. His act of political censorship is completely antithetical to libertarian ideals and the democratic process. I have publicly accused him of these and other tyrannical actions. In the space of twenty-four hours before coming to power, three separate nations moved into the region to endorse him and a fourth made a sudden switch of his endorsement. Mercurian’s arrival to power was nothing short of a coup. I personally did not really mind this, since I myself have made some questionable decisions while campaigning for power, though they do not even compare to his actions, but his recent ejection of his political opponents shows his dictatorial inclinations. The nations ejected MAY have been attempting an invasion, but the region that they are allegedly from is one-fifth the size of ours. This fear of invasion was clearly irrational and used as a pretext to get rid of political enemies… not unlike the Patriot Act. In addition, the alleged lead invader, Vbeir, had asked other nations in our region for endorsement. If he really did seize power, we could have simply withdrawn our endorsements for him. Even if all of this happened just as Mercurian’s supporters claim, the password lock is absurd. There was no good reason for it other than to stifle political competition for a week while he consolidates power. This will ensure only tyranny and desolation for our region, which has under my tenure prided itself on being open to all people, a bastion of liberty in this increasingly hostile world. Under my leadership, our region more than doubled in size, and we have gained significantly more power in the United Nations. We must oppose the tyranny of Mercurian. I ask that you endorse me as a replacement. “He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself.” --Thomas Paine, Common Sense |
