Alright boyz, here we go!!! Fallout 3 first impressions thread!

Finally got a house at Megaton after getting my explosives high enough to disarm it.

I did manage to waste the head of Tenpenny Towers though without repercussions.

I finished Moira's entire quest and did it right (no lying).

Rivet City was a pain in the tail to get to. Centaurs are disgusting.

I don't know if it was scripted, but happened upon two Wastelanders hiding/defending themselves from a radscorpion. Sadly I couldn't kill it in time to save them. The one guy just cowered in a spot until the Scorpion found him. It was gutwrenching.

Saved Little Big Town too, have yet to find Lamplighter.

Finished the quest in Arefu, but have to go to a place to get the reward (didn't want to spoil that part).

I'm enjoying it immensely, but next time I'm playing evil or at least middle of the road. I'm way too nice

My playthough so far (contains multiple spoilers of early parts):

Restarted, last game only went to Megaton and then couldn't play for four days . Second time out decided to go evil-leaning neutral, completely out for myself... although occaisonally I do something stupid like agree to help a kid near Grayditch.

Atmosphere is eerie and desolate, hence awesome... only thing I hate is anytime I'm around insects because they make that disgusting crawling noise and I constantly feel one of the nasties is right behind me.

My favorite part so far probably has been Minefield. I'm already nervous because I have no Explosives ability (its still letting me disarm way too many traps in my opinion, lousy nerfing for noobs). I get into town and suddenly all hell breaks loose, because their is this ancient sniper blowing up cars!

What I found great was that he was a named character, instead of generic 'raider whatsit' so I was intrigued. I thought, if I was all alone out in this wasteland, I'd probably mine the hell out of a town and hole up with a sniper rifle as well.

So what followed was about an hour and a half of sneaking around town from cover to cover, watching my step for mines, while an old man was trying to kill me from the tallest building in town. I was determined to find out what the story was and try to convince him I'm harmless.

Ultimately I approached the building (at first unarmed trying the yield button but it did not work ). Ultimately though I was getting injured, and my evil-neutral stance (and my somewhat ironman rules about saving) forced me to put two aimed shots through his arm to cripple him. Unfortunately it blew off his arm and he bled to death.

Ransacked the town trying to find anything about who he was, but I couldn't find out anything about the backstory. So I invented something myself about him being the last survivor of a town and probably watching as everyone around him died horribly and he lived out the rest of his life alone in his hometown.

I'm still curious whether it is possible to talk to him, will probably come back as a stronger good character in another playthrough.

Anyway, the great thing about this game is that it has those moments that are quirky and non-gamey. Like a kid with a live bomb running up to you chased by raiders... I had no explosives skill so I said 'heck no I ain't gonna disarm you' and ran for my life hearing a small pop behind me. Little scenery elements that make you wonder what happened here... its all good fun, and at least looks like it can survive two or three plays (it seems most decisions break down as good/evil with an occaisonal neutral branch).

Did you find out anything about the Arkansas character? I was at the end of a long marathon session last night trying to do some Moira missions (before I blow the hell out of Megaton).... and I spent forever trying to search the houses before approaching him to find out if he was some evil guy or an NPC I could talk to.

It seems like the entire town has no story data in it whatsoever, but I'm curious whether I missed something (and doubt I'll be back that way for weeks until I start another game).

I agree the sniper rifle is awesome.

On dealing with fire ants:

I didn't finish the mission in Grayditch because I was a level 2 noob and the ants looked like they were a waste of my meager ammo. But the attenae are a good target... find a soldier or warrior, and cripple it, puts them into a frenzy where they will flame other ants.

Once once starts to attack the other will attack it back, so you can have warriors and soldiers basically take each other out with about three aimed shots (of my lowly 10mm pistol at level 2, although I had about as much Small Guns skill as possible at that point).

If the warrior or soldier survives, typically you can outrun them so I would generally herd it towards the next group of ants and then berserk one of them to start the process over.

Its the only way I managed to exit the town, since otherwise the dang creatures take way too much ammo to kill, and melee is practically suicide against a soldier/warrior at low levels. Workers are nothing of course.

From the guidebook that I read, Arkansas was the last survivor from the town. His family and the other families that lived there were taken by raiders. He set up the mines and caused some rumors to make the raiders return to grab more people only they were massacred. From that, no raider stepped foot in the area and most people claimed it was haunted. I don't think you can interact with Arkansas, you can only defend yourself and kill him, or leave him alone to his solitary madness defending the ghost town.

I popped two stealth boys, approached the city from the side his house was on, crept up the stairs and killed him quickly and quietly with the silenced 10mm pistol. Not the most challenging way but still fun although watch out for the mines in his freaking house.

I haven't played it on PC but I would likely agree with him given the future of modding for the game.

I am, however, impressed at this game's performance on a console. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything in the current game experience.

I would suggest the PC (my machine is tricked out so I'm on ultra high quality and it looks good), the game is great, but I feel there will be a flood of user made content if they release the tools (and I think they will do so, although they may be delaying it for time and strategic reasons, ultimately they know the user content keeps interest in their company high).

Some things will be probably tweaked about the gameplay, so if you have a gripe you'll probably find someone who has agreed with it and fixed it.

Depending on the tools they offer, I could see some really good content mods coming out of this (and I'm thinking of entering the fray myself). Lot of room for expanding the wasteland, say to the west or north... I'm personally thinking vast stretches of barren wasteland towards New York will be a fun project to mod.

Anyway, in short, if you never play user mods, its a toss up, but if you are interested in more gameplay months from now for free, then its PC easily.

There's already a few minor mods out and some bigger mods (as in quests, ect) in the works. The engine is the exact same one used for Oblivion so some mod makers have been able to get mods out despite not having the official tools.

i went on tilt and decided to kill Moriarty and whomever else was in his saloon. i stepped outside (thinking since i was indoors no one would know) and i start getting shot so went back inside. i spent the next 10 minutes killing everyone who chased after me and even killed the sheriff. killed the guy who wanted me to blow up the whole town and increased my karma. i decided i would never be allowed to walk around Megaton again so i stopped and went to replay an earlier point. but at least i know how to disable the bomb now, some black kid had some info for me.

for such a long drawn out game i don't think i would want to continue to play it for months afterwards via mods, so i'm quite happy to play it on my 360. by the time i'm done with this i'll be ready for the next game. i have a short attention span.

Got into a situation with "The Family" tonight.

They are a well armed group and after stumbling upon an abandoned house with 2 super Mutants and a Centaur and then having to go through 2 mirelucks to get to their lair in the train station I was low on both ammo and healing aids. I had no choice but to try diplomacy and I got real lucky hitting a 20% chance on speech and talking Vance into letting me see Ian West. I convinced him to leave, then brokered a deal for the Family to protect Arefu in exchange for Blood packs and gained some pulse grenades as a reward. It was a 3+ hour ordeal going through that whole quest for Arefu and afterwards I happily dragged my ass back to Megaton for some rest. Now I need to get up some caps to fix my Sniper Rifle, I plan to venture into DC and I know it will be needed there.

And I got the game on the PC because I don't like playing first-person/third-person games on a console. Something about them on a console gives me motion sickness. I don't get that on a PC (I used to until games started using the mouse to change what you were looking at.).

And because I do like to go back to old games from time to time. Shortly before Fallout 3 came out, I was considering playing through some Oblivion again.

While looking for the Family's hideout east of the Grocery Store near Arefu, I stumbled upon FOUR Super Mutants, a Centaur, and a Super Mutant BERSERKER holed up in an old church. I picked off two of the supers away from the church with my hunters rifle without taking much damage. Healed, crept closer and found the rest. Took down another super, then the Centaur, and the other super and berserker got stuck behind some trees and rocks, where I peppered them with grenades and my remaining shotgun rounds til they died. Got a minigun out of it, which was sweet, and another mininuke. Almost died twice as well. There was a person tied up in the church, and I freed her. She gave me a couple of bottle caps for my trouble. Still haven't found the Family's hideout, since I teleported back to Megaton because it was getting dark and I was running low on everything.

That was an intense one for me as well....

I am also playing on normal and find that to be a pretty good challenge in some areas.

I ran into the lookout, before entering the main area, and he was friendly and I didn't provoke him verbally....but he saw me access one of their terminals and turned hostile, and I wasn't terribly concerned about killing him. Unfortunately, that turned the rest of the family against me, and gave me a kharma drop for every one that I dropped, so by the time I made it out of there I was considered completely evil, and now I've got ANOTHER price on my head, and more regulators on my ass everywhere I go. On the plus side, I was able to hire Jericho in Megaton, and he makes for some good backup.

I took some karma hits with them too. Struck me as funny that you could obtain bad karma from that encounter.

That was another reason for the 360 purchase. On my computer monitor I get motion sickness, but the big screen TV doesn't seem to give it to me. Loved the first few hours of the game that I've played, can't wait to play more this weekend.

I'm playing on normal difficulty, but can definitely see myself going through it as evil a second time and playing on hard.

Lucy's family is in Arefu - right on top of a freeway overpass. The Family is located northeast of there, and I accessed it through a metro station - I think it was Meresti station...

I'm with you, I'm 12-13 hours in and am trying to finish all the quests in Megaton before I continue the main storyline. I'm up to the 3rd chapter of the book(just one task left on chapter 3 I think), and finished the quest line with Lucy West/the Family. For awhile I was exploring any building I ran across on the way to an objective, but am not doing that anymore every time heh.

It was a random encounter, not part of the quest. So yeah, I wasted them.

FYI they are working on an update, including a fix for the "suicidal" citizens of Megaton. Six of the citizens are dead in my current game, so I'm waiting for the fix. I've been loving this game, but I'm not sure how a bug that big slipped through testing. Oh well.

I'm really enjoying this game, several of my friends are also playing it and we're already talking about how we'd like to set up our characters for the next time around. I definitely like the way the perk system is set up in the game, and I particularly like how different weapons have different strengths and weaknesses, in addition to their raw damage.

I think I progressed 3 times for the main quest... haven't really pursued it since then. I'm beginning to wonder whether or not I've been developing my character properly... I'm told it's a Level 20 cap?

I went to complete the Fire Ant quest yesterday and as usual went after every roaming beast on my way there. Well in addition to Fire Ants being dangerous because they breath fire, some of them are pretty tough. Needless to say, thinking I had plenty of ammo when I got there has now turned into, oh shit, where did it all go. Suddenly I have precious few rounds left and no stimpaks, so I decide to leave and get more.

I started to head out of the subway tunnels, sniping Ants I came across on the way out and doing fairly well getting crits. I am close to the exit and lining up what I thought was the last Ant in my way and he has no idea I am there. Suddenly I hear the clatter of feet and turn around just in time to catch two fireblasts in the face from a pair of Fire Ant Soldiers who came out of nowhere.......Cut scene to my corpse fully engulfed in flames...Damn it!!

Once you get your own place in Megaton, you can store stuff there in cabinets and such.

The caravan is generally there from daylight til dusk, but not every day, and there are at least 4 caravans I've seen in my travels.

I've seen ones that specializes in junk (pots and pans, etc), guns, medicine, and a mixture of everything. The specialists tend to pay a little more for the things they like, naturally.

On fire ants

I mentioned earlier in the thread about my terrible time in Grayditch. I went back again and emphasize the importance of the attenae and running like hell. I got together a huge pack of the bastards and it was actually quite beautiful to see a massive wall of flames as they baked each other once I frenzied a couple. The ammo savings were tremendous, although it was still an expensive mission.

As a test i tried consuming fire ant nectar and playing melee style, with some decent results (I also used melee drugs though since i'm built for guns). If you have a lot of food you don't mind using, don't mind drugging it up, and want to save ammo it might be a viable strategy. However, I tend to carry LOTS of food, and wanted to get rid of it since it was taking up so much carry weight... and stims are too valuable to me to justify doing melee.

On cool ways to play through the game:

I recently restarted, since my ironman evil guy ended up dying a particularly brutal death.

My current playthrough was a goody two shoes lady who I wanted to make a barter/diplomat type. Ironically, as I approached Megaton there was a caravan leaving, and I decided to apprentice myself to Mr. Crow (made sense at the time, how better to learn the trader trade eh?).

What followed was an epic journey through the southern waste, ending at the Citadel, where they told me to take a hike (which sucked big time). All of this was level 2/3, with the caravan guard blasting the heck out of everything and myself acting like a sort of scout/mechanic (repair was useful for my character type since I basically fix things up for sale).

So why I find it interesting:
- There are actual trade routes through the waste, and although the AI merchant gets a little chicken and runs like a moron across the world map, it seems like generally they return back to a waypoint path and plod across the land.

- The world seems a lot more alive playing this way, I encountered an Outcast patrol (which scared me too much to bother them all that much), another scavenger, and all sorts of raiders/mercs along the trail.

- It felt good not to be god for a day, the caravan guard was the heavy hitter of the ad hoc 'team' I was playing in. Altered my strategy a bit by playing the caravan scout role, couldn't just run or cheap trick the enemy, I had to stick by the merchant. My favorite moment was managing to perform a lucky VATS as a grenade was in the air heading for my savior (the caravan guard)... I managed to hit the 58% shot, if I did not my best buddy would be gibs and the four raiders that had vectored in on us probably would have murdered me.

- Exploring the world felt somewhat more fulfilling by being on an actual trail. When i was by myself I would tend to just cut straight across the wastes, and it does not really feel the same. The scenery looks better when you travel a more realistic route. The map felt less randomly slapped together, and more cohesive.


I eventually parted ways after the Citadel which was barred to me , since I was afraid of deeper DC at my level. I barely made it to Grayditch (was well supplied but Centaurs caught me by surprise that they could spit, and that there spit would blow up CARS I was hiding behind!). Rested up, finished that mission (I think) and then just made it back to Megaton to finally offload my junk (made a bit of money off some diner in the middle of no where by the river).


The game may be a little soft on the manufactured plot, but the potential for making a story in your own mind and role-playing it out is pretty huge. I think it speaks to how well they built the atmosphere in the game, despite all the technical nitpicks and gameplay simplifications the hardcores might obsess on. I can't remember being drawn into a world so much since the earlier Fallouts, everything else I approach as just a game (which for the most part is great enough as is).

You need to be careful about respawning containers, but I've heard that most containers appear safe. I haven't revisited anywhere quite yet to know if the rumor is true. It depends on how the respawning is set up, in Oblivion some locations would never respawn, others would respawn every few game days, in general your loot shoudl be able to hold for a trip to a nearby store and back, especially since Fallout doesn't seem to have a notion of time passing that I can detect.

Question on the repair skill. The PS 3 version instructions are sparse at best. I have a decent skill here, but when I click on my inventory the option to repair does not come up. Do I need tools or some type of kit to do this?

On the PC when you open your inventory and select a weapon or piece of armor the option to repair pops up on the upper right hand side of your pipboy screen.

You shouldn't need any tools.
