Wait till you get to my age, everything accelerates and 3 becomes 5.
I checked my PM and the other one was the Beatles. There were two that I can't mention yet so that makes 5 obvious choices. Last edited by Buccaneer : 10-10-2007 at 08:54 PM. |

Are you sure it's age? It's most likely Monty Python-itis.

If anyone is ok with this, when we get towards the end, if you are the last person that needs a given month, just go ahead and post it as your last round pick right away since no one else can take an event in that month, shouldn't affect anything

Interesting pick. I'd been trying to figure out if this counted as a natural disaster or not.

Hmmm... that's straddling the line with Natural Disasters. Because it will open up a can of worms with regards to that category.

As always, I'd prefer to let the voters decide. If I want to picks the opening weekend of Gigli as a Natural Disaster I should be able to. It might cost me all my votes, though.

Could not find a specific year for this event, but I don't think it will be a problem.

I was going to go w/ that and generally think its a solid pick, but I avoided it because I couldn't find a reference to the year that the plot was taking place in the movie, and thought it was a bit of a grey area. |

I agree with ML, fwiw. I like when the voters decide if a pick is good for the category or not. It opens the door to some real creativity in your pick, but also the chance it'll fall completely flat and hurt you in the end.

One of the cool things about history is that very often a seemingly minor event has enormous consequences. This is a good example: an Empire has a problem, and asks for help. They overstate the circumstances a bit to get people's attention and hope they might get a few soldiers sent their way to help. They ended up getting a whole lot more than that, and we're still dealing with the after effects almost 1,000 years later.
March 1, 1095 - The Byzantine Empire attends the Council of Piacenzaasks to ask for assistance against the Turks, leading to the organization of the First Crusade (Pre-17th century Europe)

5.5 April 30, 1803 - Louisiana Purchase (19th Century)
The United States doubles in size, purchasing the Louisiana Territory from the French. While securing ownership of the port of New Orleans was the original goal, in the end the US pays ~$23 million and obtains what is now nearly 1/4 of the modern United States area worth of land. As an outside observer (in this and the other drafts ML has conducted), I recommend that picks stick and the ambiguity either be rewarded or punished by the voters. (John Lennon, anyone?)
I first noticed this game due to the "Ameri-centric" thread, so I had a different understanding of how this was being played. IMO, if this was just titled "Historical Event Draft" with the condition that you had to list the actual date of the event so you couldn't have repeat months, bordering days, etc, it would be a whole different story than the current "Date/Event." As long as the game remains titled that way, I'll personally put as much thought into the recognizability, if you will, of the date in question as to the event taking place -- which, as has been discussed, are very different things. I'll be following closely from now on. Last edited by Logan : 10-11-2007 at 08:14 PM. |
