Bills re-sign Tyrod Taylor.

Cowboys to cut Romo tomorrow.

Garcon to SF. I'm really hoping this, and the turmoil in the front office in DC, isn't leading to Cousins being traded there.

Colts to trade Dwayne Allen, sixth-rounder to Patriots - NFL.com

Always liked the guy but he does have his health problems and is probably on the downside of his career.

Don't worry, Hoyer will be your QB next year.

AJ McCarron sounds good in D.C. Then after next season they can franchise him and repeat the whole saga!

And yes, that was the Niners giving 5 million a year and 10 million guaranteed to a perfectly average fullback. Spend it if you got it

I think his key point was that it was for a fullback (or guessing anyway).

I was just thinking of the "perfectly average" part {shrug}

Oh, I agree. Not your average FB. I'm just taking a stab at what he meant.

Hadn't seen that, the stuff I'd seen had him middle of the pack. And yeah, they still basically doubled the highest paid FB in the league.

How many teams run with a FB these days? Someone could probably be average and the best in the league at the same time.

Devlin resigned with the pats on a two year deal, but his bonus was only $300K, I don't know his salary off hand

And, just so you know I wasn't randomly looking to bust your chops or anything, my interest in who the fullback was stemmed from being curious if it was the guy from the Falcons (he's actually going to the Baltimore it appears). That's why I saw the mention of his ranking last season.

And that interest in turn largely came from an article I saw a few days back that mentioned the Falcons FB being perhaps the most important FA in Atlanta.

fwiw, his deal is being reported at about half the one you were talking about so yeah, it does seem on the high side.

I agree with the general notion that there's a ceiling on what you can get from a fullback in the modern NFL... but Juzszyck is pretty good. Ravens fans really love him, and he can do everything well. He shapes up as a long career sort of guy to me.

On the MMQB Ten Things Podcast a few weeks ago, someone asked what position/player-type might be due to become more prominent in the way that athletic tight ends and slot cornerbacks have become more important in the last 5-10 years.

And Andy Benoit guessed fullbacks. Apparently, Atlanta and New England each used fullbacks more than almost any other teams last season. Having a fullback in the huddle forces defenses (which, these days, are built to go against 3 and 4 WR sets) to stay in more base personnel. Offensive coaches are using that to try and get better matchups across the field.

I don't think that we will be going back to I-formation off tackle based offenses anytime soon. But apparently there is a place for fullbacks as chess pieces in modern offenses.

The post jon gave was king of jarring to me. I have always liked him as a player. Yet every article I read about the signing from standard journalist reports to Barmwell on ESPN said he was just an average ho hum guy. Reading those reports I kept thinking to myself "Well, I guess I thought he was better than what he is"

Not saying PFF's ratings are the end all of existence, but they certainly provide some validation of the signing. SF needs to spend money this offseason, they may have had to overpay to get a guy to come through the rebuilding effort. By the time they are ready to contend for anything other than a high draft pick, they'll be able to cut/restructure this guy.

Zero issues with the signing.

Denver had a great young FB who played quite a bit this year before he was hurt. He didn't get the ball a ton, but the coaches and players all raved about his blocking.

Everything in this league is cyclical. FB's will rise again.

Looks like Calais Campbell is going to sign with Jacksonville My beloved Cards were up against the salary cap wall with a lot of players to re-sign. Looks like Campbell was the first victim of that.

The Shanahan offense uses a FB a ton. Darrell Young was becoming a folk hero in DC until the change to Jay Gruden meant that FB wasn't going to be used.

Damn. Pats making moves.

signing Gilmore to a big money deal, possibly trading Malcolm Butler????? I know I've had to say "In Bill we trust" before, but wow, not what I expected.

I have enough respect for the Pats front office that the fact that they want to/are willing to trade Butler makes me suspicious as a Saints fan. What's wrong with him?

Are you guys trying to sell us another Tebucky Jones or Brandon Browner?

Bengals going into next season currently with a decent LG and crap everywhere else on the offensive line. They were bad last season and the team just let its two best walk.

It looks like an interesting year upcoming for Dalton.

Dianna Russini on Twitter: "The New England Patriots are considering trading Malcolm Butler to the New Orleans Saints for Brandin Cooks per sources"

If you think Gilmore is great and you get cost certainty i think it's a good move. Butler's next deal was probably going to be built off of Gilmore's anyways.

Nothing. I mean, he made THAT play in Super Bowl 49. Was Pro Bowl in 2015.Could have been Pro Bowl in 2016.

I mean, the fact that I'm questioning Bill Fucking Belichick on this trade rumor should count for something.

Zeitler gets 60/5 with half guaranteed. Makes sense that Bengals did not match. Probably be a 3rd round compensatory pick off that.

I have no problem if they manage to somehow field a decent offensive line this year.. But I certainly don't expect they will. Scary how thin and bad the line looks now.

Great deal for the Browns and Texans.

None of the QBs in this year's draft class are year 1 starters anyways outside of the guy at Clemson.

The incredibly rare (if not unprecedented) NFL salary dump trade! Amazing!

$16 million to buy a second round pick for a team that's in rebuild mode? I like the move for Cleveland.

If Houston can get Romo with the money? I like it for them, too.

Maybe they think Ogbuehi and Fisher are ready to fill some spots? Didn't seem like it based on last year. If you have Eric Winston playing tackle, that's usually a last resort.

Winston is at least passable. I guess we will see what Westerman can do at RG.. I'd expect there to be a couple draft picks and a veteran depth guy signed too.

This is new to me. Why didn't the Texans just cut Osweiler? I assume the cap hit is different for a trade than for a cut, but can't find details via google...

Browns are making some really strong moves, and I don't think they're bad ones. Overpays maybe on the linemen, but they have the money to do it with and the key in this league is having a good line. I think they are the next Raiders if they keep it up and draft well.

The Browns take this on, release him and it costs them $16m in both cash and cap, which is why they got the draft pick too, but they have plenty of cap room to spare so it's no issue to them?

Pro Football Focus had Zeitler as the 2nd best FA on the market. Not sure if that's an overpay for him.

IF ESPN.com has it right

Quote:
To be exact, Houston will save $16 million in cash and $10 million against their cap this season.

The Texans also will get the Browns' fourth-round pick this year in exchange for their own sixth-round pick. So Cleveland gets Osweiler's contract, a 2018 second-round pick and a 2017 sixth-round pick, and Houston gets Cleveland's 2017 fourth-round pick, saves $10 million in salary-cap space and $16 million in cash.

PFF agrees with the $10 million saved on the cap.

Quote:
An absolutely shocking—but brilliant—trade, the Houston Texans off-load QB Brock Osweiler to the Cleveland Browns. In a move rarely, if ever seen in the NFL, this trade saves the Texans $16 million in cash and $10 million in cap space, and the Browns are essentially buying an extra second-round pick from Houston. The Browns are reportedly not expected to keep Osweiler, but because they came into the offseason with over $100 million in cap space, have the luxury to make such a move. In addition to acquiring Houston’s 2018 second-round pick, the Browns will get their 2017 sixth-round pick while giving away their 2017 fourth-round pick. — John Kosko, @PFF_JohnKosko
