Played for a while, got bored, never went back. I would have liked the game more if I didnt have to have a fire station every 2 blocks.

I know it marks me as a crazed heretic, but Cities XXL is a better sandbox city-builder.

As a heretic you shall burn.

And your last thought will be wishing that there was a fire station within 2 blocks of you in order to put out the fire.

I am adding a bunch of songs to the Gold FM (60s only) station on Cities. I like the core idea, but I wanted to flesh it out with a ton of new music. And just hits to play into the core concept of the channel.

I am adding:

Del Shannon - Runaway
Del Shannon - Hats Off to Larry

The Guess Who - These Eyes
The Guess Who - No Time

Mitch Ryder - Devil with a Blue Dress
Mitch Ryder - Jenny Take a Ride

Paul Revere and the Raiders - Indian Reservation
Paul Revere and the Raiders - Kicks

Gary Lewis and the Playboys - This Diamond Ring

Skeeter Davis - The End of the World

Maurice Williams and the Zodiac - Stay

The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man

Zager and Evans - In the Year 2525

Sly and the Family Stone - Everyday People

Herbie Hancock - Cantaloupe Island

Blood, Sweat & Tears - I Love You More than You'll Ever Know
BST - Spinning Wheel
BST - And When I Die

Chicago - Does Anyone Really Know What Time It Is?

Ides of March - Vehicle

The Crystals - Uptown

Herman's Hermits - Mrs' Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter

The Modern Folk Quartet - This Could Be the Night

The Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin
The Moody Blues - Tuesday Afternoon

Procul Harum - Whiter Shade of Pale

The Ronettes - Be My Baby

Question Mark and the Mysterions - 96 Tears

Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit

The Lemon Pipers - Green Tamborine

Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense and Peppermints

The Zombies - She's Not There

The Chambers Brothers - Time Has Come Today

Diana Ross and the Supremes - Someday We'll be Together

Dusty Springfield - Son of a Preacher Man

Edwin Starr - 25 Miles to Go

The Four Tops - Reach Out, I'll Be There
The Four Tops- Walk Away Renee

The Four Seasons - Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You

Percy Sledge - When a Man Loves a Woman

The Temptations - I Can't Get next to You
The Temptations - War

The Animals - Don't Let Me Be Misundertood
The Animals - House of the Rising Sun

The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
The Beach Boys - Wouldn't it Be Nice?
The Beach Boys - God Only Knows

Spencer Davis Group - I'm a Man

The Beatles - Hey Jude

The Grass Roots - Let's Live for Today
The Grass Roots - Midnight Confessions
The Grass Roots - Temptation Eyes

The Lovin' Spoonful - Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind
The Lovin' Spoonful - Summer in the City

Rare Earth - I Just Want to Celebrate

Three Dog Night - One
Three Dog Night - Eli's Coming
Three Dog Night - Celebrate

The Shocking Blue - I'm Your Venus

Of course, this list both reflects my own bias. These are songs I already own. There aren't many traditional groups such as The Rolling Stones, The Doors, and such here, and a token shout out to the Beatles. I love the jazz fusion latter part of the 60s, and you see heavy use of Chicago, BST, Three Dog Night, Ides of March, Grass Roots, and more here. This is my list, obviously.

In some cases the more well known songs of an artist, such as Three Dog Night, ran up against the 70s. In some cases, I may like a certain artist;s music a lot better than their hits. I tried to keep no artist to more than three of, which the main game has with Jan and Dean already - three songs.

Hope you enjoy that look at my updates!

I decided to make some more changes to my additions to make it more consistent with the initial radio station.

Here are the artists on GoldFM

3 songs by Jan and Dean
2 by Etta James
1 by Bruce Channel - Hey Baby
1 Eric Burdon song
1 by The Drifters
1 by The Shirelles
1 by Martha Reeves
2 by Vouges
1 by The Newbeats
1 by Mary Wells
1 by The Troggs
3 by Tommy James
1 by BJ Thomas

This gives you a feeling of doo-wop, modest rock music, and vocal stuff.

The problem with the 60s in reality is really that no decade has as distinct a sound as others. No decade shifts their sound as much from the beginning to the end. The end of the decade and especially 67-72 is a real push-back against pop music and the beginning of the decade in a major way.

Now I love this era of music. I own every album in this era by most prog bands, like King Crimson or Pink Floyd, Moody Blues or Procul Harum. I own everything from Pet Sounds to every album by Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, and more. Even the most successful act from 67 to 72, Three Dog Night, is regularly changing their sound with three separate lead signers on their band, and changing their sounds. "One", "Joy to the World," Eli'c Coming, Celebrate, Mama Told Me Not to Come and Never been to Spain each sounds distinct and different. I love psychedelic music, and of groups taking the genre seriously.

There was a time when Incense and Peppermints was my favorite song from the 60s.

No other decade is as distinct from the beginning to the end. The 70s embraced easy listening and disco early, and if you wanted to be successful, you had to do the same. 80s? 90s? 50s? 40s? 30s? 20s? Even the 2000 and 2010s haven;t been that different

But the 60s is tonally different. And the sound of a song like Incense and Peppermints or Nights in White Satin is just extremely different than the sounds of the radio station, and it feels jarring at times to hear it.

So I am pulling these artists, which don't align with the tone that the station has going for it:

Chicago
Moody Blues
The Guess Who
The Byrds
The Beatles
Sly and the Family Stone
The Grass Roots
Three Dog Night
BST
Herbie Hancock
Ides of March
Zager and Evans
Jefferson Airplane
Procol Harum
Strawberry Alarm Clock
Beach Boys
Spencer David Group
Chambers Brothers
D. Ross and the Supremes

We are leaving in lighter rock like Mitch Ryder and Paul Revere who fit perfectly, doo wop additions and soul stuff like Edwin Starr's 25 Miles to Go.

I am also adding in songs from the 60s or 50s that do fit tonally with what is happening here:

The Dell Vikings, Come Go With Me

Danny and the Juniors, At the Hop
Danny and the Juniors, Rock and Roll is Here to Stay

The Happenings, See You in September

The Five Satins - In the Still of the Night

Del Shannon - Little Town Flirt
Del Shannon - Handy Man

The Drifters - There Goes My Baby
The Drifters - This Magic Moment
The Drifters - Under the Boardwalk
The Drifters - Save the Last Dance for Me

(as you can see I freakin love the Drifters!)

Lou Christie - Lightnin' Strikes

Paul Revere and the Raiders - Just Like Me

Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels - Little Latin Lupe Lu

T. Rex - Bang a Gong

The Lovin' Spoonful - Do You Believe in Magic?
The Lovin' Spoonful - Daydream

Tommy James & the Shondells - I Think We're Alone Now

The Duprees - You Belong to Me

The Crystals - He's a Rebel

The Ronettes - Baby I Love You

I'm shocked by how well Handy Man by Del Shannon fits this station and game.

In case you are unfamiliar with this cover of song by the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer (it hit 22 on the charts in 65):

Another song that's very well suited is Modern Folk Quartet:

So what are the mandatory DLC's for this game?

From doing a bit of reading, it seems like After Dark and Mass Transit are pretty much must have's, and maybe Industries (?). Thoughts?

Also, any good tutorials out there on getting started?

I think industries changes the game dramatically and I would list that as a must have with the other two you mentioned.

I would say that all of the DLCs listed below really make the game better and aren't just cosmetic:
After Dark
Mass Transit
Industries
Park Life
Campus life
Snowfall (only if you want street cars)

The rest only make small changes like radio stations, natural disasters, concerts, added buildings, etc.
