How does 6 help you more than 5?

If you miss it, and are only up 4, and the Bears score a quick TD, now you're down 3, and need a field goal to tie. Just kicking the extra point ensured that if the Bears score a TD, you can win with a field goal, if there's still time.

Perhaps if there is some kind of mess up or a block on the PAT attempt from the Bears, it makes the score tied and you go into OT.

True, but of those two scenarios, the missed extra point is least likely.

If they went for two, missed, the Bears get a long TD pass, then the Giants tie with a field goal and lose in OT, everyone would be pissed.

First off I'd like to thank the refs for giving that win to my beloved Cards.

Second I'd like to strangle my beloved Cards. They lose last week to a team that has looked terrible all season...except when they play the Cards. Warner throws for nearly 500 yards and they still lose. This week their top receiver is out and they are playing one of the hottest teams in the NFL. They capitalize on early turnovers by the Browns, but Warner only throws for about 170 yards, and yet they still win (thanks to the refs). They drive me crazy! Big game against Seattle next week.

Third I'd like to thank the Chiefs for putting Coastal Carolina QB Tyler Thigpen in the game. I hope he gets to start next week.

From some of what I saw, it looked more like "Carson Palmer, meet Hot Seat. Hot Seat, meet Carson Palmer". For the 20 minutes or so I watched early in the 4th quarter, he was missing receivers all over the place, including a couple of key miscommunications.

But I only got to watch a bit.

I did love how in the Tampa / New Orleans game, they managed to call holding on the Tampa Bay center, but had no problem with McCown getting levelled well after he threw on the same play (dude took two steps and unloaded).

Also, the NFL has GOT to change the offsetting penalties rule. If a guy has a 10 yard run, has facemask grabbed, and then one of his buddies comes over and flattens the grabber after the play, I know they offset, but since both are spot fouls, shouldn't they cancel but keep the play? Doesn't that really screwover whichever side made a great play (either offense on a good yardage play, or defense on a good stop)? We're not talking holding or something that affected the actual play, we're talking two penalties that occurred as the play was ending. This is one of those little NFL rule things that always seems wrong when it happens.

You know, you could've left out the part about Sean Taylor at the end, and your post would've been funny. Why would you ruin something funny that way? Why?

I heard Madden make the point that it's football, since when did it have to be played on some pristine field? I agree completely, the whole point of football is that it is brutal and messy, and the team that can outplay the other one, regardless of circumstance, is the better team that day. All this crying about the field is kind of sad.

Probably should have - and may have at any other point of the game. NFL.com for highlights of the game to see it. He almost got his feet down anyway, despite behind hit pretty hard while catching.

As far as the Cleveland-Arizona game goes, while I can see the argument that Winslow was forced out, I don't know if I'd be comfortable with them overturning the call on the field. I don't think it was obvious in the replay that he would have come down in bounds if he hadn't been hit. It was close, sure, but it wasn't obvious.

On top of that, I thought force-outs weren't even reviewable. Those are judgment calls on the field, aren't they? I'm exaggerating a bit here, but isn't that heading towards reviewing holding penalties or some other judgment call?

I suspect it's somewhere between the seven digit salaries & the eight digit salaries.

What surprises me is (assuming the field is as bad as the level of complaints from fans seems to indicate) that the other owners aren't raising holy hell. That's a lot of investment running around on a sub-par field.

You're right, they aren't reviewable. I say just do away with the force out. If I guy catches the ball and the defender makes a play that forces them out, I say good for them. Eliminates any sort of guesswork and I generally hate judgment calls.

Who came up with this force out rule anyway. Isn't the whole idea of defense TO force people out. Silly. It's like "I would have caught the ball had that guy not tipped it away from me."

I have heard several players, current and former who have played on it or been around it the last couple of weeks and they have all said something along the lines of it being the worst field they have ever been on. I'm not saying it is because I wouldn't know, but it sounds credible to me.

It's not reviewable. I think what happened was the ref probably went to review the play. Someone informed him that a force out was not reviewable. He checked just to make sure Winslow didn't happen to get two feet in bounds anyway, came out of the booth, and then made the correct call.

It looked like a force out to me, but it was very close.

Exactly.

It's not 1960 anymore. I would be pretty pissed if one of my teams players got hurt because they were plaing on a crappy sub par playing surface.

I agree football is a messy game, etc... but I would rather have the talent on the field determine the outcome. Not the field itself.
