My front lawn is a disgrace, patchy and what is there is mainly weeds. Decided that this year was the year I'd do something about it, bought a bag of Scott's Weed and Feed. Plan was spread that in April to do the weeding business, then in the fall reseed and it would all be better for next year.

Now we're in late June and the bag of Weed and Feed is still unopened in the garage.

One of the things about living in a subdivision.

Your front needs to be "respectable" looking.

I've had decent "natural" experience by overseeding with a hardier grass seed more suited to my climate, like this: Combat Extreme™ Transition Zone - Transition Zone Grass Seed

Plus using something more natural like iron chelate to kill broadleaf weeds: Access denied

Our front yard is at least presentable, but our back yard was a DISASTER AREA. Blank patches from tree shade and the now-removed trampoline which had been overrun by some rapidly-spreading chain weed along with all sorts of other crap. Mostly weeded and beat back with a weedwhacker (last year yet another mower decided to not start, got fed up and bought a push reel mower, which unfortunately can't cut anything over 4-5" as it just combs it down). Put some new soil down in a low area which had basically become a frog swamp, and over the dirt patch/litter box trampoline area. I'VE ACTUALLY BEEN ABLE TO GROW NEW GRASS! And that's just from some cheap seed picked up at Ollie's. There are still patches to be worked on, but this is very exciting for me, as usually everything we plant dies.

We've lived at our house 3 years and our backyard is still just dirt. We have two massive oak trees that just soak up nutrients.

I learned today that the studio site that Marvel movies are largely shot at are wholly owned by Dan Cathy of the Chick-fl-a Cathy's. He is also building a town near by (which I have actually been to several times but didn't know the background) that is tied to the studio site, with a couple of screening auditoriums and a movie theater.

Watching the USFL semifinal end-game here... it's being played about 10 minutes from here. I had no idea it was such a bad product. Decent major-college level talent, penalty flags on almost every play, and much more could be called.

No imagination or variety in play-calling. No defense aside from clutching and grabbing. They structured with two four-team divisions, and this semifinal is between two of the three teams that finished 4-6 in one division.

I guess television can support it. It outdraws most sports on television - kinda like mid-major college football in terms of ratings, except on networks rather than cable.

The final is out here as well. Can't see going, even if the tickets were free.

I am surprised that I haven't watched a second of any of the spring FB products out there. I thought I would. But there's been plenty of other sports to keep me occupied and I realized that I don't need to watch FB until the fall.

I haven't been to a USFL game in person since the '80s. Just caught the end of last night's since it was on network television and I was curious.

Apparently, two USFL teams (Pittsburgh and New Jersey) use Canton as a home stadium, and it seats only 23,000. There are plenty of good seats available for the championship game. It's a nice little stadium - my wife's university uses it for graduation ceremonies.

But I doubt the league would exist if not for the television deal. Even the overtime seems more television than football (they go immediately to alternating two-point conversions, minimum of two).

On one hand, networks are desperate for live sports content people will watch, and football is America's top sport by an extraordinary margin now. On the other hand, it's impossible to follow these teams. They're not really local to anywhere and any breakout player will be in an NFL training camp next month. One of the starting quarterbacks yesterday (a name I recognize as a fourth-stringer recently in the NFL) joined the team right before the end of the season. So the players are decent, but everything else that makes the NFL a professional product is only half-there. I don't see this as a long-term league or something people will really care about.

I generally keep a sharp eye on my insurance explanation of benefits vs healthcare provider bills. Its amazing that I see lots of errors, but none of them ever seem to be in my favor.

Okay, had some Modelo tonight. Glad I tried it but eh.

Pilsner is Pilsner but do think Modelo has more "taste" than a Bud/Miller lite.

Woke up Monday and got ready as usual. Went to my car and pressed the button to open the garage door to my condo complex. No response. I couldn't drive out without the remote working.

I dropped my remote on Friday afternoon and didn't think much more about it because it still worked in the elevator. I didn't realize that it used a different element for the elevator and garage.

I keep my spare remote at work so I ended up catching the bus to work.

So embarrassing - especially when there were students from my school on the same bus.

I was in Melbourne and love the transit system. I stayed at a couple different locations and it was always convenient to travel on the tram/rail.

The only problem I had was being confused on the tourist 5/7 day pass. I thought it was all you can ride for the 5/7 days but apparently not. Didn't realize it until I was on the tram and card didn't beep.

TIL the creepy producer of the Nickelodeon shows (iCarly, Victorious, ect) that's accused of pushing sexual situations on the actors and generally just being creepy was the chubby guy on the late 80s show Head of the Class.

Also, my kids just told me that they are rebooting iCarly and apparently she and Freddie getting together is the end game and they and all their friends who grew up on the original are outraged.

Then you'll likely also be surprised to learn that the CEO of Paramount (and Nickelodeon) was the 'cool' kid from Head of the Class

Random thought:

Kids these day have it easy when it comes to getting.. ahem.. adult content.

When we were young, it took 6 minutes to download a picture of the Budweiser swimsuit girl, and you didn't know what to guard first, the monitor to prevent your parents from seeing it come in line by line, or the phone line because someone was going to pick it up and knock you offline.

Now adays, you enter any term (and a lot of them don't have to be explicit ones), and you get 250 pages worth of videos, VR, etcetera.

Pepsi is making a "condiment" called Pepsi Colachup. I have no thoughts on how it tastes, but the name is terrible because if it would happen to catch on Coca-Colachup is going to put Pepsi's product in the ground based on the name alone.

I saw them at MSP on the same flight as me going to LA one year I was traveling as a kid. I couldn't believe it. They all had their show "letter" jackets on and were just hanging out together. I didn't see Howard though, I would have wanted to talk to him since I loved him watching WKRP in syndication. I must have been 10 or 11 at the time.

I finally got to try Coke Ultimate and I like it. Probably second on my list after Starlight, but the others have not been good (although I've never tried the one that was only available online and supposedly tasted like "bytes").

I taste citrus or peach or maybe bubblegum? Hard to pin down.

Wife likes it though. Everyone I've seen online says it's like a Runts banana flavor but I don't see it.

That might be one of the most appalling flavor notions I've ever heard.

If accurate, dear Lord, why would anybody do that on purpose?

This is pretty neat.

Archaeologists in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii have uncovered a painting which depicts what might be the precursor to the Italian pizza.

The flatbread depicted in the 2,000-year-old fresco "may be a distant ancestor of the modern dish", Italy's culture ministry said.

But it lacks the classic ingredients to technically be considered a pizza.

The fresco was found in the hall of a house next to a bakery during recent digs at the site in southern Italy.

But we know US pizza > Italian pizza

And now, in stories that involve breaking the law WITHOUT people getting shot..

(Short version: Guy hires people to trespass into remote area owned by neighbor to cut down trees because he wants a better view of NYC (theory is "Eh, the fine is $1,000 per tree, and my house value will go up by more then 32,000, so, just cut down 32 trees, and voila!). Except the the fine applies to him, the contractor, AND the sub contractor (Up to $96K)... and there's the the catch. As part of it, you have to pay for the tree removal AND planting of trees of the SAME SIZE.. Between building a road, removing the trees they cut down, putting new trees of the same size in and taking care of them for a couple years, (oh, and the fines for doing all this), the would be NYC-View owner is now looking at $2 MILLION. Actually, now that I think about it, the guy probably wishes they had shot him.
