I don't want to make this too serious. I feel like this is the sweet spot for this thread. Yes on one hand, the CHILD is 17 years old, she is in a position of authority, the law etc., etc. On the other hand, especially as a IMG attendee, I feel like this might be the only area of this 17 year old YOUNG MAN's life where he is seriously considered a minor.

Oh and to answer the main question in this case, I say no based on her mugshot.

Agreed, and I guess we have had this conversation before on here. Drilling down to the why: is it that we feel a female is more vulnerable, so we are being protective? is it that we feel a female is some how more gullible? Is it that we feel like since we were all 17 year old boys, we all would have been very happy to have sex with a hot teacher at that age, but we don't have the same understanding of a girl that age? Or is it the trout option?
I believe it is that we relate to the 17 year old boy, but there is also a blend of the first idea as well.

I think it boils down to our perception of power in our society. In our culture men have had, and in most ways, still have a power advantage over women. So start from that vantage point, because even if legally it doesn't matter, here it's about perception.

When an older man hits on the young girls the perception is that he is already in a position of power, then he's a man, and he's using his cultural advantage over her. Hence, she is more deserving of protection.

In the reverse situation, even with a position of power, the 17 yr old male is somewhat still considered to be in a position of cultural power so much so, that many times the teacher might be seen as unable to resist his cultural virility and magnetism (TY VH). So he's not only in a position to reject her with authority, but it's understood that if he doesn't reject her, he is adding to his social bank account by using his power to coerce her into his desires, knowing she could get into big trouble.

So legally, same same. Gender revealed, ages only, should be same result. But when cultural norms and societal perceptions are added, completely different results.

What got me was when the 13 year old's dad confronted her on the phone, her husband got on the phone with him and tried to get him to drop it. Her husband already knew! From the article, it does seem that she has done much to redeem herself. But victim's family is against it and says she hasn't fully accepted her guilt. She's 55 now. I would be more sympathetic if she did a mea culpa so no problem with her staying in jail.
