I didn't feel anything in Kentucky, but it was picked up on a central KY seismograph.

Earthquakes are weird. They also taught me that I'd be quite terrible in a crisis. I've been through a couple now - I sit there, make a stupid face, am all confused, then its over, and then someone else tells me what happened.

"And are earthquakes really "weather""

They show up as a part of my phones weather radar.

There was an earthquake felt in Philadelphia during WrestleMania weekend there, so yes, obviously, that's just the scientific method playing out.

I wouldn't be doing (or on) anything that had critical need of GPS or electronics at about 8pm tonight.

NOAA says tonight's 'cannibal' solar storm could be worst in 165 YEARS and cause GPS and power outages - as they reveal exact time it'll hit | Daily Mail Online
Quote:
Earth could witness the worst solar storm in 165 years as five streams of plasma released from the sun this week are set to make crash into our atmosphere tonight.

:
Scientists have also predicted that three of the five streams, known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), could combine to create a powerful 'cannibal CME.'

Data about what is in store for our planet will likely be captured around 8 pm ET when the explosions of plasma racing through space will be one million miles from our planet - and NOAA plans to issue alerts immediately.

This could finally be TEOTWAWKI !!!

So I should expect a call from my mother around 8pm when her TV goes off and she can't watch Jeopardy?

"Make crash" is either a typo or the author allowed their 3 year old to write a portion of the article.

Either way, I LOL'd.

That is not what I would expect in Portland. Does it get very hot there normally? I always imagined it pretty moderate.

Back in my youth it would practically never get over 90 degrees, whereas these days it seems like we get two weeks over 100 degress and a full month above 90.

Some AI tells me we had 26 days above 90 in 2023, and 29 days in 2022, versus 5 days in 1989 and 7 days in 1993 (random years I pulled out of my ass)

I was expecting the 90's to be rare, and compared to this hellscape it still is. Portland is that place I dream to live but know I never will.

Yeah it could certainly be worse (most of my extended family lives in Michigan for example), the humidity usually stays bearable regardless of the temperature, and there's practically no mosquitos/cicadas/whatever to speak of.

Having said that, Seattle has the best weather in the NW these days. Since they're on the sound they're typically 10 degrees cooler than when the same system hits Portland.

I wish I could post a pic on here. We had a solid 15-20 minutes of the Aurora outside our house just west of Lexington. Amazing!

Crazy aurora photos all over my social media today. I missed the show. Will jump in the car with the dog and drive around in the desert just outside the city late tonight. Will either see the lights or be eaten by wolves.

About 10pm last night. I'm in Atlanta tonight so they're back home trying again without me. Don't think they were successful since they didn't send me any pics.

She just texted me that the local weather guy said they would be most visible between 4am-7am so she's setting her alarm to check. They were good - not THAT good.

I'll just wait until I have the money to fly to the arctic circle and rent one of those glass condos so you can lay in bed and watch all night.

the track shifted a bit to the east, and it looks like I won't be getting any of the rain that was expected from the storm.

Earthquakes are strange. There was just one outside of Pasadena that 4.7. Not the biggest quake, but because it was a shallow one, people are saying the thought it was the "big one" because it caused a hard felt shaking.

The opposite of severe weather... early-mid August and we are completing our 3rd straight day with the AC off in central KY. Been high 70s/low 80s with no humidity and lows in the 50s for 3 straight days. It's been glorious. Tonight begins a slow climb back to mid-upper 80s and high humidity (and rain). But it was nice while it lasted.

Severe storms came through last night and we lost power around 8:30. Just got a text from Duke Power they expect power to be back around 11... PM. Threw my meat probes in the fridge and freezer and those are already past the point of no return.

And starting later today the remnants of the hurricane are expected to start coming through with current estimates around 7 inches of rain over 2 days. Our basement is almost certainly going to flood, so I'll spend the afternoon trying to to move things out of harms way.

We haven't had major storms (mainly tornados or severe T-storms around here), but due to a couple of cold snaps and wind-related outages that lasted over 24 hours, we had to re-stock our refrigerator/freezer 3 times in less than 18 months a couple of years ago.

And worst part is, the way the electric grid is set up, we're on a separate grid from most of our neighborhood - including the neighbors to our right and across the street. So while we're out of power, we can look out our door/windows and see everyone else's power on.

Now that I had time to think about it, there's nothing really worth saving in the fridge or freezer anyway. Probably be more expensive to buy an extra cooler or 2 and some ice. I did make some kick ass chicken and rice I was hoping to eat more of. More worried about our sump pump not keeping up over the next few days and figuring out the optimal place to move everything in the unfinished basement... assuming I have power to see down there.

The only thing I feel guilty about is throwing away good meat. So if there is a storm and things are starting to defrost, I'll just cook it up on the gas stove. Can always mix meat into meals for the next week.

Our biggest expense was actually all of the condiments, dressings and other perishables in the refrigerator. And having to replace all of it 3 times in a short period. You don't think about how much that stuff costs until you replace it all at once.

We are looking at a possible 10+inches in a 24 hour period tomorrow. We have rain coming in tonight, but the brunt of the storm that is likely to be Tropical Storm strength as it goes over doesn't hit till Thursday night/Friday morning. We haven't been without power for more than a few hours here ever. We are close to the power companies headquarters, our power in the neighborhood is underground, and we less than a mile from where the main power line feed comes in. Hopefully our luck will hold out. More worried about the giant pine trees in our back yard. We just had a bunch of them taken out last year, but there are still some pretty big monsters back there close enough that a bad fall would hit the house.
