They caught him-looks like police chase his car and eventually stopped and arrested him

It sounds like most of the people thought it was just fireworks at first. It's a 4th of July parade after all. I don't think it hit most of the people in his area until they had gotten into a store to take shelter. Then people came in saying there were dead bodies on the sidewalk.

His girlfriend is a teacher which is why they were there since some of her students were marching in the parade. And she was obviously in hysterics hoping none of them were shot. Lot of people got separated and parents I guess were throwing kids in dumpsters to protect them (which is actually some quick thinking).

For those who don't know Highland Park, it's one of the last places you'd ever suspect violence. Affluent neighborhood with almost no crime. You'll probably hear about how they shot a bunch of 80's movies there (Ferris Bueller, Home Alone, Uncle Buck, Sixteen Candles, etc). It just feels so random now.

From CNN:

Quote:
The suspected gunman was dressed in women's clothing during the attack and investigators believe he did so to conceal his facial tattoos and his identity, according to Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli, a spokesperson for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. After the shooting, the suspect exited the roof, dropped his rifle and blended in with the crowd as he escaped, police say.

I knew he was from Chicago originally and now lived in Highland Park, but I didn’t know he and his family were there in the middle of it when it happened. Just glad they’re all ok.

The guy dressed like a woman and after shoopting everyone, blended in with the fleeing crowd, ran to his mother's house and drove out of town to escape.

Turns out Tony’s wife had taken a little video of the parade just a few minutes before it happened. They dropped to the ground on top of their kids until the shooting stopped.

We were out of town on vacation when this happened (just got back a couple of days ago). Highland Park is where my wife grew up and we knew lots of people at that parade. If we had been in town we might even have been at that parade.

We went to a farmer's market yesterday and honestly I spent the whole time scanning the crowd.

Kind of crazy but the shooter got all the way to Madison and contemplated another shooting before turning around driving back to Illinois.

I'd read about the Madison part, but not the second celebration part.

I don't know if it would have made a difference since the gunman was not confronted for 40-50+ minutes but didn't know about inability to lock classroom doors?

I know at my wife's school, she does have doors that lock. She said she was told not to unlock the door during an active shooter event even if there were kids outside banging to get in.

I couldn't imagine having to make that choice.

Uvalde school's classrooms lacked a basic security feature — and it’s missing across America
Quote:
That’s because Robb Elementary is among thousands of schools across the country lacking a basic safety feature that experts have recommended for decades: classroom doors that lock from the inside.

Despite billions of dollars that have been poured into hardening schools nationally, 1 in 4 U.S. public schools lack classroom doors that can be locked from the inside, according to a survey conducted two years ago by the National Center on Education Statistics, a federal research office.

I watched the whole video. What a shitshow. Every single one of those cops, except maybe the ones who showed up later and took the initiative to move on the shooter (like red shirt guy), should resign in disgrace.

I want to read the investigation and understand what the hell was going on in each LEOs mind during this 40+ min.

The 2 questions I want to know

1) Was there shooting and kids getting killed while the cops waited in the hallway?
2) Did any person in that hallway establish themselves as the officer in charge of the situation? Or was it someone outside the building and trying to manage remotely?

There is something about that officer strolling across the hall to get hand sanitizer just really pisses me off.

Barring a federal investigation, I don't think we'll ever get those answers. The police have repeatedly lied and are no longer cooperating with investigators. The Mayor came out the other day and said their statements directly contradict the evidence he has seen.

Even the video released today was edited.

The irony of the punisher wallpaper on the phone while kids are being shot is something else. The divide in what they are and what they view themselves as encapsulates America.

The edits, based on reading what the (I think it was) Austin newspaper account of what they have in hand, were the entry of the shooter into the building, him making his way down the hall (peeking around a corner at one point) and a scene of him firing shots into a classroom (no students or anyone else are seen in that portion) after opening the door.

But basically the raw footage leaked to the media already, so any discrepancies will surely be publicized. They've posted, I believe, some but possibly not 100% of what they received.

(I'm not justifying the editing decisions that have apparently been made for the official release, I'm just saying that it's probably not going to result in anything remaining unseen)

Yeah, it was the paper that did the edit. They have the rest. CNN edited it further, removing the gunshots of the shooter.

I think (thought?) the edit referred to in the post here was not the ones made for reasons of sensitive content but rather the edits that are being made to the version that will be officially released to the public on Sunday.

Those were what I was talking about at least, whether they were the ones in question I'm not sure (now).

From the article in the paper, they have the full 77 minute video.

Edit: The Statesmen has released the full video on their Twitter account.

After watching the first ten minutes of the full video (there are still sound edits and the kid at the begining is blurred), it really reinforces that the police retreated immediately after the shooter fired at them, and they made no attempt to close back on him while he continued to shoot in that classroom. The guy that think was the officer in charge did go back closer to the classroom and yell at him, but made no move to bring the officers (including guys with assault rifles) in to stop him.

The report on the Uvalde, TX school shooting is one of the more thoroughly damning things I've read in quite a while.

There was no shortage of blame to go around and the legislative investigation spared pretty much no one collectively, though it does single out a few people who actually -- shockingly -- tried to act according to policy, protocol, and basic common sense.

Even if it's just a detailed summary of the 77 pages, I'd recommend reading that rather than simply relying on your favorite media outlet to give you talking points. And I mention that for a couple of specific reasons.

1) Remember how the media told us about the officer who requested permission to fire on the shooter as he was entering the building? The investigation found no credible evidence that such a thing ever happened, and it's believed that the person he did have eyes on was not the shooter but rather was a coach at the school who was herding students inside the building.

2) Remember all the criticism about the officer who was seen checking his phone / reading texts while standing around in the hallway? Indeed he WAS texting .. with his wife, a teacher at the school who was severely wounded in the attack. That officer was eventually disarmed and removed from the building, with the implication that he was taken outside because he didn't want to just stand around with his thumb up his ass like most of the nearly FOUR HUNDRED officers on the scene.

His wife was eventually transported to a hospital after the scene was secured but died en route.

Read the report, or at least read detailed summaries that aren't focused on specific narratives. And that advice goes to everybody regardless of where your spot on the political spectrum happens to be.

No indication of that as far as I've seen.

They were too busy standing around with their thumbs up their ass to shoot much of anybody. (Indeed, the report noted that the ones who did finally take down the shooter pretty much got permission from nobody -- since basically nobody was functioning in any sort of commander role -- and just acted)

Get ready. The shooter in the Indiana mall today was taken out by a citizen with a handgun. All the gun nuts will be publicly masturbating all over for the next week.

Glanced through the report.

Looks like Arredondo is the main screwup for X period of time in not taking charge, or positioning himself in the right place, or not telling someone else to take charge while he was in the school.

Then the report said others should have known Arredondo was screwing up and should have taken some sort of action.

I didn't catch it if it was in the report, but I'd like to know who the commission thought should have taken action knowing that Arredondo was MIA (e.g. is the deputy sheriff typically the guy, or someone from the 10+ different law enforcement entities that was on site).

The sense I got was "somebody, ANYBODY".
