Some places that vote a lot of red sure talk a lot of blue if you really listen to 'em.

A reminder I suppose that no candidate ever wins an election without votes from rather complete morons.

Honestly, people have no clue. I still remember the old Tea Protest with the guy holding the sign that said "Keep the government hands off my Social Security."
Or the lady that was at a Trump rally that was asked why she supports him. She said "I have a bunch of medical bills, and I hope Trump will get the government to pay them off."

Edit: And it is not one-sided. I have seen socialist level liberals complain about taxes being too high or the government being bad. Many people don't really have an ideology other than the other guys are bad.

On this rare point we can agree for sure.

In case anybody wonders, my comment here was part of a much longer absolute rant provoked by me making the mistake of reading comments on an article in my old small hometown newspaper.

JFC, it's so bad I struggle to even visit. I'd unalive myself twice, just to be sure, before I'd ever live even NEAR there again.

Working in healthcare you learn that most of the people that care enough about not having gov run healthcare to go on rants about the evils of universal healthcare to strangers end up having Medicaid, Medicare, or Tricare. In my experience it’s 100%.

It could be the hottest day in history and the AC broken, but if I work from the couch, the dog will still insist on me putting on the blanket so he can lay under it next to me.

Mommy possum sets off our ring spotlight nearly every night walking through our driveway. So we know there are possums around here. We're at a complete loss as to how this baby possum got into our bedroom. I was in the garage earlier in the morning so it could have gone through the side door into the house, but it would have then had to go up a set of stairs to the living room and then another set of stairs and down the hallway to our bathroom. That's with 1 dog and 2 cats in the house, although 1 cat was asleep in the office.

The only other thing I could think of is down from attic crawlspace as the entrance to that is in our walk-in closet. However, it would have somehow had to lift the cover and jump down without really disturbing the cover because it doesn't appear to be moved.

My wife is now convinced every sound we hear is another possum, which made for a great night's sleep.

Baby possum-gate update

I got up at 4:30 this morning because the dog had to go outside. I let him out and wait the 5 minutes or so it takes for him to explore our back yard and do his business. On his way back in I see something small right outside the door on our deck not moving, the dog kind of stops and looks at it, and then comes in and goes back to his bed. I go grab a flashlight and I'm trying to look at it and at first I'm thinking the dog dropped one of his stuffed animals on the deck and left it. Then I get the flashlight on it and it's the same possum, not moving, looking dead.

I leave it there thinking I'd take care of it when I get up and as I get back in bed I let the wife know that the same baby possum I got out of the house is on the deck dead. I thought that would calm her nerves a bit, but no, she says that makes her more paranoid.

Then she wakes me up at 8am to let me know there's no dead baby possum on our deck so I guess our possum friend panicked at some point while letting the dog out and played possum.

Now our back deck is pretty large and elevated about 6-7 feet off the ground. So I have no idea why this possum decided to climb the steps to get onto our deck and hang out at our back door so this leaves me with more questions about what the hell is going on than answers.

My wife woke me up this morning standing in the doorway of our bathroom trying to calmly tell me that we had a possum laying in the dog bed in the floor of our bedroom. This mutherfucker got into the house, into our bedroom, and curled up in our dog bed while the 2 cats and our dog (that was apparently kicked out of his bed) did nothing.

We're going to have a family meeting today to go over responsibilities.

We have an appt with pest control scheduled, but they can't get here until the 28th.

Do you know how he got in? It sounds like you need to live catch him and take him off somewhere to drop him away from your house. For a baby like that, a cheap $30 trap will do it.

We're at a complete loss as to how it's getting in. Today was just about getting him out of the house since he was in the middle of the room in the pet bed and we didn't want to scare him and have him bolt.

I told the wife the next time we're going to get him into our pet carrier and go dump him somewhere away from the house.

We're hoping pest control can give us an idea of how it's getting in. The only obvious possibility is it's sneaking in when I let the dog out in the middle of the night. It's dark in the dining room where our back door is and the light on our deck is out and needs replaced, but I was trying to vigilant last night when I let him out and didn't notice anything.

That would be a good sneak if he did that. I've never known anything that size getting in without a pretty large hole. Mice and rats can get in through a hole the size of a nickel, but not a possum. An open door/vent/pet door would be my suspected culprit. If he is hanging on the deck, then maybe he did slip in when you weren't paying attention.

I bought a ring flood light cam that gets here tomorrow. We have one for the front of the garage and wanted to get one for the back deck. This pushed us to finally take that leap.

So what is it that drives grown adults like me to go on a 16 mile backpacking (one night camping) trip? Its like saying my life is too comfortable so I should go and rough it for a while.

There’s something being out in the middle of nowhere, sleeping in a tent with your own stink, listening to the insect sounds that starts at dusk, wondering if that’s a bear (or ax murderer) rustling in the brush at 1pm.

Don’t forget to bring your flashlight, trowel and toilet paper. Maybe practice squatting.

It's funny what people seem to enjoy on (personal) social media.

I'm a million miles from being any sort of foodie, I don't cook to speak of anymore, I probably eat 1/3rd to 1/2 of my meals in a week as something nuked from a previous days drive-thru run ... but almost without fail if I post something about food, it ends up with above average engagement from my social media friend base.

Doesn't matter if it's a restaurant, something I've nuked, or some random low-end item that I decided to roll the dice on, food is just one of those universal things people relate to.

And of all the things I've ever posted about, I've gotten more private encouragement to "do more of those" about food posts than anything else.

Life, not to mention my friend base, sure is a funny thing lol

I work remote so we have a company messaging system. Today, our remote desktop was dead, so everyone posted in the company wide system every time the couldn't log in... Nevermind that IT had emailed about it.

Now that it's finally working, someone posted we had a new hire so everyone then replied welcome.

Then someone posted a birthday, and now it's happy birthday spamming.

Like, can't it be implied that a person is welcome or if that we hope someone has a good birthday? I don't need 75 messages pour in that literally say nothing.

Now I'm just waiting for someone to post about a work anniversary so I can complete my bingo card.

My Facebook Memories had a hella shocker for me today.

It's a photo (of me) that was shared by an old girlfriend 14 years ago.
The picture was originally taken in 1988, so it was 21 years old then, now 35 years since it was taken.

That ex, sadly, passed away a couple years ago.
Y'all know the rest of the shit that's happened since then.

I'm left wondering, how in the fuck can it feel like more shit has happened in the 14 years since that was first posted than in the 21 years that preceeded it?

We mistakenly had someone from another site send out an email enterprise wide instead of site wide. It led to 2-3 weeks of people using reply-all to respond in various ways. From what they thought were funny responses, to people asking others to stop responding, to people asking to be removed from the email chain, ect. I had to set up an email filter to delete them because, at its peak, I was getting 50 emails a day from that chain.

Our state bar setup some mailing list for something or other, and hilarity ensued. There was dozens of responses asking to be removed, then dozens of responses telling people to stop hitting "reply all", then dozens of responses trying to explain that "reply all" wasn't the issue because sending any email to this single email address resulted in an email to everyone, and then one guy started sharing cooking recipes, another guy sent some photos of his dog. Every so often we're tempted to get that whole thing started again

$17 thousand dollars later, we now have a working septic system. How does the universe reward me? Our dishwasher is no longer working. We are getting to a blood/turnip level situation.

That does sound high. Did you have to replace it completely or fix it up?

FWIW, with kids out of the house, wife and I hand wash and maybe use the dishwasher once every 2 weeks or so.

I was wrong. It is $18 thousand. I forgot thousand dollars to have the soil test and county permit done. That is not including any additional landscaping.

It was technically a fix, but the only part of the old system we could use was the original tank. We had to put 200 LF of new fill-lines along with a second thousand gallon pump tank. The new lines had to be added up hill from the tank for reasons, which also required about a quarter acre of trees to be removed. My back yard now has a handful of trees left and just exposed dirt.

Turf Masters came by with their last treatment of the year.

The guy had his hose over his shoulder as he sprayed the backyard. No mask. If this is his SOP, I suspect he'll have health issues in the future.

It depends on what he is spraying. It is all based on labeling requirement. I don't use anything that requires a mask. Lawn guys actually have more products that require one than we (pest control) do. But my guess is this late in the year they are probably using something pretty light right now.

We had a surprising twist in the possum mystery that was solved by the new Ring Floodlight on the back deck. The threat was coming from inside the house.

This is a pretty interesting map. It is interesting how almost all are Football teams. The only baseball one I saw was the Yankees in Rhode Island, which begs the question "why?". The Celtics being the most hated team in California is classic.
Blocked

Edit: I didn't see the Yankees was basically all of New England, not just RI. And there are other baseball. Just noticed the Cards and Cubs haters.

Definitely friend. He thinks everyone and everything is a friend. I don't think he's capable of harming anything living.

When did porch lights off stop meaning candy was over at a house? We've gotten several groups since we turned off our lights.

Times like this I wish I had a stripper's support monkey to stay on my porch.

We had one trick-or-treat visit. One. It is sad how that tradition has died.

Halloween made a huge comeback in our subdivision. We had our table setup with candy for the little kids and wine for the big kids. From what I have heard, more households combined to hand out candy. 2 or more households get together at one house, have food and drinks on hand in the driveway area and give out candy. I am not sure if the kids get the same amount of candy they would have gotten if they had went to each of the individual households. There was a definite increase of groups of teenagers taking their younger siblings out while their parents stayed home. Usually we would get the younger kids with parents early and then the older kids later. There were a lot more younger kids with the older ones during the second wave.

We had 51. About average for recent years, way below average from the 2000's when it was a new neighborhood with a bunch of young kids.

If/when we move, told my wife no way we'll move into an "active adult" neighborhood. I want to be in one with a bunch of young families.

We had a good amount of kids stop by. This is the first year in awhile that we've handed out candy. We are usually out with the kids and leave a bowl with candy out front for trick or treaters to self serve.

Very nice to see the young kids come by as well as some of the older ones that I haven't see in awhile.
