I hate it too. I've read that it's not good for your engine, either.

I don't hate it. It just takes a little getting used to. I have another car that's a hybrid and I promise that engine turns on and off 20x more often than that one does.

Absolutely loathsome tech.

You might be happy to know that the new head of the EPA is looking to rollback the incentives that increased the popularity with manufacturers, that should be a solid step in the right direction to ending perhaps THE single dumbest fucking thing ever added to the automobile.

Yes, if you want to incentivize manufacturers to make cars more efficient (not necessarily Jon's point, I know), then there has to be a way to write into that legislation that the efficiency has to be tied to the underlying engine's mechanics, not a gimmick like auto-off.

Auto-off is the SECOND worst recent "advancement" in car tech. The first is the evolution of cruise control to "consistent following speed" tech. THAT is the fucking worst.

Cruise control no longer stays at a consistent speed, it adjusts to the speed of the car in front of you. So if you have your speed set at 75 but the car in front of you is doing 70, suddenly you've been driving 70 for 5 miles before you realize it. And because it slows you down too far behind the car in front of you, when you want to pass, you end up cutting off other cars because you have to get into the next lane so your car will speed up, thereby pissing off cars in the left lanes because you have to wait for your car to speed back up plus make up all that distance to pass. It's a terrible system that IMO encourages road rage, but seems to have been adopted for most new cars..

I really don't get that. I love adaptive cruise control. I have no problem hitting the gas and speeding up to pass slower cars without cutting people off. It is especially great in heavy traffic to keep consistent speeds as traffic ebbs and flows. I'm also constantly on back roads that change speeds every couple of miles, and it helps keep me from speeding in a company GPS tracked truck. It is actually one of the greatest recent inventions IMHO. I use it constantly. When I have to trade out my work truck in a couple of weeks with a vehicle that doesn't have it, I am going to go crazy.

Dola: I will add how well it works depends on the system. My current work truck is a 2019 Ford Ranger, I feel like it system actually accelerates too fast. It also tends to tail gate at times, even with the car distance adjustments. It also doesn't hold lanes as well as my Tacoma. My Taco basically drives itself. It might give too much room for the car in front if anything.

The whole point is to be at a consistent speed. I don't want to have to use the gas/break often, nor do I want to have to constantly look at my speed to make sure I'm not going way slower than I thought I was. It's a horrible concept, full stop.

Is the reason for it so they can say their car gets an extra 2 MPG or something?

If we're talking car features, I want the newer one that tells you how long is left on each red light. Saw Audi offering it but I guess there is a monthly fee.

Actually doesn't save much in gas. It lowers emissions. At least that was what my son's research on it was when he bought his car.

Adaptive cruise control is great. Ksyrup is objectively wrong here.

Although the quality of implementations do vary.

I don't understand any of you. The entire purpose of cruise control is to drive a consistent speed as long as possible without using gas or brake AND to go the speed you want to go. Adaptive cruise control does neither of those things.

No it doesn't. It keep a consistent speed. If a car slowed up in front of you, you change lanes. The difference is if you can't change lanes immediately, it slows you up so you dont have to disable the cruise control the cruise control. That way when you can change, you turn the wheel and hit the gas. Boom, on your way again. Even better, if you are stuck in slow traffic, it will keep you at speed without having to make adjustments yourself. Driving in Atlanta, that is fantastic.
Also, you can turn it off in every vehicle I have ever seen it in. What exactly Is the complaint?

When you change lanes, you are much farther behind the car you are passing, and you're going slower because you're already slowing or slowed down, so you can't quickly pass. Instead, you often cause the cars you pull in front of in the other lane to have to slow down. It's a terrible system.

Just never have had that problem. Change lane while applying the gas. Do you never slow down with regular cruise control? Just weave in and out of lanes at full speed? I just don't get your complaint because I have never seen it, and I drive all day every day.

I very rarely have to use gas or break. But, I live in KY. I'm not talking about driving on a six-lane congested highway in downtown ATL. I'm talking about typical highway driving. I can easily go an hour or more without touching either pedal. When I drive to work from Lexington to Louisville, I turn off cruise control about 5-10 minutes from my office, and my typical drive is 65 minutes.

My car has a feature where it will stop the car if it thinks you are about to back into something. Sounds like a great feature except when you are in a parking garage and the car won’t allow you to fully back it into a parking space because it keeps alarming and coming to a complete stop. It also can’t tell what snow is and if I back into my driveway in winter to make it easier to leave in the morning it’s constantly slamming the car to complete stop because it doesn’t understand that I’m not actually going to hit that white stuff.

I think the closest I've come to a cardiac arrest in my entire life is a few months ago, when my wife's car decided to do this in a busy Trader Joe's parking lot. That plus the thud of the emergency brake kicking in made me think I'd run over a kid who had run behind my car, as I'd looked and knew there was nothing there that I had seen.

Turns out... there was absolutely nothing there. But that was an absolutely awful experience. Had friends with us and one of them screamed as she assumed the same.

Second favorite is when the car decides that you are leaving your lane and need to be thrown back into it. We a ton of roadwork on I-95 by us with temporary road markings and different types of roadway and it just can't handle it. Even when indicating it will fight you. Even when you are merging into traffic at speed and there's a wall where it wants me to be. Absolutely great.

Why does the check engine light never come on for the mechanics? I'm beginning to think car makers conspire with auto shops to have lights come on at random intervals in hopes you take it in so they can charge inspection fees.

Vuity Eye Drops: Eye Drops For Vision Improvement

Are you tired of never having a pair of reading glasses handy when you need them? With Vuity eye drops, you won’t need to take your reading glasses everywhere you go. These FDA Approved, prescription eye drops for vision improvement help you to see life through clear eyes.
I assume it works since FDA approved, but does it really, really work for real world customers? Interested in their opinion.

Vuity is an eye drop solution you apply in the morning to have better vision throughout the day. We recommend applying one drop to each eye daily. The drops start working after 15 minutes, and the effects last for up to six hours. The drop’s effectiveness will increase after 30 days of use.

My wife says that it helps reading vision at the cost of distance vision. She asked one of her doctors, and in her opinion it is more of a gimmick that hasn't had enough regular users to know the true side effects.

I think we discussed those drops somewhere here a couple of years ago. I don't remember what my brother said about them though. He's drinking wine somewhere in France right now. But I'll see him this weekend.

Probably a long shot this late, but I’m headed to New Orleans tomorrow and looking for some food options. I’d be most interested in mom and pop smaller places rather than the usual fare you get when you look up places to eat. Will be starting in Slidell so I’d consider places outside of the city proper if it’s worth the drive. Will be eating two meals out.

TIL that someone just made up that "Idaho" meant "gem of the mountains" in a Native American language, and everyone just believed him and started using the word until we made it the name of a territory and then state.

Idaho is a made-up word.

Did a class this morning on stinging insects. I brought up the fact that in 22 years, I have never been stung by a paper wasp. Guess what happened today?

So this is just a local funny, but this house was listed for sale for $5.25 million 6 months ago:

https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...1_M68668-96182

For context, it's a new build in an area where 99% of the houses would sell for at most $130k... and thats only because people would buy the land because the city REALLY wants to gentrify it.

2 weeks after it went up for sale, a local paper posted a piece about the "developer" with such quotes as:

Quote:
While others may consider him a real estate visionary or creative, he doesn’t define himself.

2 months later, a different paper wrote a piece about it with the headline:

Quote:
They didn’t cut any corners.

As you can see from the Realtor link, the property is currently listed for $2.5 million and in foreclosure. I would have to guess this undefined visionary cut the most important corner... Paying people.
