It sounds a bit like doing Motor-Cross but staying on roads because well you're getting on a bit now and falling off might hurt

In a typically English fashion my heart says we'll win this 2-1 ... unfortunately my rational side isn't wholly convinced.

Although without Carragher at the back I reckon we've a shot so long as we keep a clean sheet the first 15 minutes while we settle in and conquer our nerves, for once I think the longer the match goes on an even keel the more confident England will become .... we KNOW we're not expected to dominate Germany in the way we were expected to win the group matches and in a strange way that'll help us.

Crushing tackle by Ashley Cole - yet completely legal. Non-contact sport my ass.

I think this is the first time I've been able to hear the fans singing/chanting over the buzzing of the vuvuzelas.

EDIT: only briefly, but it did happen!

I dont know if its the fact it is sold as a "non-contact" sport (as is basketball), but its the rolling around on the ground or being carted off on a stretcher then popping up and waving at the crowd. I really dislike that aspect. Its the embellishment of the pain. blech.

Germany are holding back* and waiting for England to be stupid enough to push on and leave them space to use their pace, for reasons I really don't understand we appear to be tactically nieve enough for it to be working ...

*When England get the ball they collapse back towards their own area which in turn pulls England forward, they then try and move up fast and catch us with players forward, especially when our wide defenders move up this is very effective as its them who have the pace in defense.

It is unfortunately becoming more and more 'wussy' with strikers especially being more sheltered/protected - in the name of 'skill', if I had my way fouls would only be given where they're obvious and any ambiguous ones would simply play on - that'd dissuade a LOT of the diving straight away. I also think that diving should ALWAYS be a yellow card offense, even when that means its two yellows and he's off - I hate play acting (yeah I've always played as a defender - you can tell?

(I figure this is why there are a lot more 'mixed sex' leagues over here though, amateur football back home can get a bit nasty at times - whereas over here its generally played in a lot more 'friendly/non-contact' a manner ...)

Why were you not part of MY defense when I played in goal?

PS - As I've mentioned before in prior matches Rooney looks horribly off the pace again, I really don't think he should have been considered an 'instant pick' during this tournament.

We NEED to keep em rattled now, if they settle again and start playing we're in trouble - but if they stay in defensive/nervous mode we have a chance ..

propably a simple matter of how many english/german fans are in the stadium, propably more than half the stadium capacity are fans from either side.

oh, i agree wholeheartedly and am a firm supporter of goal-cameras and/or instant replay on coach challenges (like in tennis maybe like 3 times a match for each team).

my comment was merely recognizing the irony of it all in regards to the ´66 championship and i sincerely hope the german team gets back on track showing they don´t need any referee-mistakes to win, like they did before that 1:2 when they played some brilliant soccer in stretches.

the 1:0 was a brilliant effort by Klose, what a great run. The guy was named "shot" and "done" by people and shows a run like a freaking 20 year old.

The 2:0 was rivalling Argentina´s 4th goal against South Korea for combination of the tournament, brilliant chip pass by Klose, amazing run and by Muller, then the awareness to play the extra pass and then Podolski just hammering it in.

So why was Heskey such a mainstay in the England lineup? Dafoe has been very good for England.

Sh*t happens imho - sometimes its in your favor, sometimes not - main thing is we're playiing reasonably now and making a go of it.

I won't mind us losing, even to a bad call I DO mind us not playing to our potential.

That being said still 25 minutes left .... game on

And its over. Too bad - England's played a remarkably open game in the 2nd half, and that goal is going to detract from a wonderful game at large.

Heskey is generally unfashionable with fans, but he's a hard worker and good at holding up the ball and playing in his team-mates.

When Rooney is on form he'd be a good choice up front, but Rooney hasn't looked fully fit all tournament imho.

Perhaps if Lampard didn't throw his hands up on everything he might have been able to recover on that goal.
