You called it. Snow for next Fri & Sat per my weather app. No idea if it’ll be a foot of it though.

In Central KY, we're unfortunately in a zone where we're looking at 2-6 inches of snow, an inch of sleet, and upwards of 1/2 inch of ice. Not good.

EDIT: And they've upped the ice to a range of .50 to .75 where I live. That's no power for a week-type of ice accumulation, especially if you add about 5 inches of snow.

They've got little to no ice where we are, but we're looking at like 12-14 inches of snow instead. I'm not home for it, but I'll be trying to get back on Monday afternoon. Fingers crossed.

We've got at least 12 inches on the ground outside. My neck of NKY was in the region of highest snowfall. I think we were lucky to avoid the bad ice, but without any warmup anytime soon, this snow is going to be here for a few weeks at least. Flights home were few and far between. I was fortunate to get home today.

We got 5-6 inches of snow on the front end, followed by a bunch of sleet and ice from 2pm to 11pm yesterday, topped off with another inch or more of snow today. I spent 90 minutes clearing the driveway and most of it was breaking large chunks of ice and building 6 massive cairns in our yard. I hope the neighbors enjoy the scenery.

Calling for about 1/2 foot of snow currently. I'll believe it when I see it, but I'd prefer not to see it. Still a lot of weak trees from the hurricane and not sure they'll withstand an ice storm.

It hasn't snowed since I started working remote full time, but I guess one of the downsides is no snow day.

Still in hell

DM article shows there are like 3 fires going on, way apart from each other. So, I'm guessing some arson going on?

If true, hope they catch the arsonist(s). Another example of some people just deserve to die.

Apparently Steve Guttenberg (yes, that one) has lived in the Palisades forever and is essentially considered the unofficial mayor. He was out in the streets trying to get people who were abandoning their cars to leave their keys in the car so they can be moved when he was interviewed by a local TV reporter who had no idea who he was.

What a guy.

Wouldn't surprise me if there was some arson, but in those winds there's just a ton of ways for a small fire to start and then blow out of control.

Historically, with these fires, it had been a mix. Sometimes carelessness, sometimes just accidents, and sometimes arson. It could be one, some or all.

Aenima is still one of my favorite songs. But no, I don't want to see all of this suffering.

Reading about some of the "blame game" related to insurance for wildfires, this is the exact situation Florida has with hurricanes that the state has been dealing with since Andrew. I worked at the FL DOI in the aftermath of the legislature's passage of the moratorium law that restricted insurers from cancelling policies. I got to write pieces of the federal court briefs after several insurers sued the state alleging various Constitutional violations. FL has a state-run insurance company just like CA's FAIR Plan. It's still unaffordable. It's something that, like flood insurance, is probably best managed at the federal level, but why should someone in WI care about subsidizing FL beach-front property or multi-million dollar homes in CA?

There are three choices.

People pay what insurance costs either to insurance companies or to government. That's going to mean dramatic increases for people in high risk areas.

Insurance coverage retreats from high risk areas. That's going to mean less housing in the most desirable locations on coasts.

Property insurance is nationalized and the cost spread out to all homeowners. I think this is the worst, but most likely option.

I don't know what the stats are but if you have a house in a big disaster prone location AND that area has reoccurring damages/claims, I don't think someone in WI or GA should help subsidize your lifestyle choices.

I'm not talking about the occasional tornado or earthquake or 100 year flood or a St. Helens. I am talking about seemingly fire prone SoCal and Florida coastline.

So the NFL has a contingency plan to move the MIN-LA game to Arizona, but it has not yet pulled the trigger on that.

At a minimum, it seems crazy to dedicate any law enforcement, etc. resources to crowd control for a game.

Yeah, the setups I've been watching all week looked like the same kind of system as Sunday/Monday here, except further south. We're in the "all snow" (3-6 inches, it looks like) path this time, luckily. Good luck. We fortunately didn't lose power even though our trees/lines are still caked with ice. It sure is pretty, though. Especially today now that the sun is finally out and melting some of it into icicles (although the temps are still in the low-mid 20s).

Had to double check my phone this morning because there was something in the weather forecast I didn't expect to see-flurries this afternoon. The storm from Texas has made its way here now but along the coast we could get some flurries with freezing rain. Doesn't look like any ice along the coast, but inland may not be as lucky

Darnit. Snow has stopped and seems to be melting off some. Less than 2 inches. I was really hoping for a little more.

FWIW. Any ornithologists around here?

We have a metal, squirrel proof, bird feeder hanging off the back deck. We saw 3 birds on the support wiring when it was snowing. They weren't eating, it looked like they were sleeping, hardly any movement.

Wife was scared they were somehow stuck/frozen. So she opened the door, no reaction, she closed & opened a couple more times and 2 finally flew away. I had to take a couple steps for the third one to fly away.

It seemed like the cold made them partially sleep, groggy, and not as perceptive etc.

But even in the snow & cold, lots of activity. Our bird feeder is probably down 20% since we refilled it yesterday.

Wild story too. Neighbors saw some guy with what they said was a flame thrower or something and tackled, cuffed him, and waited for police. Will be interested to see if this person actually started any of the major fires or just a douchebag fucking around when they shouldn't.

I hope by "cuffed" you meant shorthand for tied up or restrained in some other way, otherwise the neighbors had their sex toys at the ready or need to be investigated by the cops themselves.

The flame thrower was a propane torch like you can get at any big box hardware store. Still could have been using it to start fires, but it isn't some illegal weapon.

Yeah, this says zip ties. I guess he wasn't charged with arson though so false alarm.

Snow started falling around 2pm here in GSO. Was intermittent for the afternoon, but now coming at a strong and steady clip. We may be headed for a bit more than the 2-4 predicted here.
Remote learning day today. Around 11am, the 15yo asked us if it would be ok if she had some of the girls from the church over tonight, likely to spend the night and potentially longer because of the weather. We said it was fine and how many, and she said "just 2 or 3." We said that was fine and asked what time she was thinking. Response: "they'll be here at 5." Yeah...she'd already invited them and (we found out later) one had already asked her parents before we knew about it. As the onion continued to be peeled back over the course of the day, it was eventually revealed that she'd floated this invite to the entire group chat of the high school girls who went to camp from our church this past summer--over a dozen of them. "Well I couldn't invite some and not all of them! Even if I just texted my closer friends and invited them in a new group chat, the other girls might have found out later and felt left out!" Little stinker knows our soft spots. Over the course of the day, more replies trickled in, so that's why we have 8 girls in our home--only two of whom belong to us--quite possibly all the way to Sunday or Monday.
