He's correct that Santana put himself in a bad spot but saying Santana "deserved it" is in poor taste, especially since we don't even know the extent of the injury yet.

Well, that wording is questionable. But the fact is, he put himself in that position - he was in a very defenseless position that also happened to be against MLB rules.

Right. I still think this happened to him partly because he only moved to catcher a few years ago. You can drill all you want but experience is the only thing that can help you in certain game situations, like that one.

I damn near cheered when OCab got hurt. He has been pretty close to terrible, and I'll accept the same offensive productivity from Janish as that means we'll be starting 3 GG caliber infielders.

Also, Dusty still sucks. Cairo is batting 3rd tonight. Because he's replacing Votto, and that's where Votto bats. Ugh.

And Janish is batting second (GUESS WHERE OCAB WAS BATTING! ANYBODY!? ANYBODY!?) while Haisey and Hernandez will be hitting 7th and 8th.

If you want to blame anyone, blame 3B coach Tim Bogar who's now cost us 3-4 games.

And of course, despite the focus on Santana's horrible bending knee, the worst injury last night was Kevin Youkilis with a (possible) muscle tear in his thumb that could end his season. Just not our year.

As discussed here recently IIRC, Torii Hunter moves to RF, Scioscia says that's not a temporary or part-time move. Bourjos takes over in center.
"Peter's going to play center field. ... You're not going to see Torii flip-flopping back and forth on a given day," Scioscia said.

It was a pretty weak bench clearer but a couple of guys from both teams were pretty fired up. Beckett hit Duncan and Choo in the first couple of innings and the the Tribe's Germano threw behind Ortiz and then Lewis threw behind Beltre and Beltre walked toward the mound and then Beckett led everyone onto the field. I have no idea how Beltre didn't get tossed, too.

Anyway Duncan and Beckett were screaming at each other and then Francona went nuts on Indians 3B coach Steve Smith. I have no idea what Manny Acta was doing during all this.

You are correct, Jon. It was just a week ago that bhlloy and I were discussing this possibility as we sought answers for the Angels' piss poor outfield defense. We just thought it would be a move Torii fought kicking and screaming. It seems from that article that this had occurred to him and Sciosc some time ago and were working out the right time to do it.

Positive move, IMO, especially if it also gets Rivera's underachieving ass out of the lineup. Obviously, this works best if Bourjos can make a decent enough transition to the lineup. He's a nice defender, great speed, makes good contact, but, hey, we're talking a fresh-faced rookie here. Lot of responsibility to hand him. Hopefully Angels management does things smarter than they did with Wood.

Torii has handled this with nothing but class, they interviewed him after the game and he basically said "whatever helps the team to win". Very impressed with him and hopefully Bourjos can really learn at the MLB level for the rest of the year.

For those who are interested, a reporter for the Star-Telegram is providing updates via Twitter on the auction for the Texas Rangers. The proceedings kicked off at 9am Central, but evidently the bidding hasn't started yet.

Let's put in a bid.

Look, I'm not a huge Dusty fan, but Cairo is hitting over .300 in a not insignificant # of AB's this year, and has been a good RBI producer.

Also, Janish has actually batted 8th more than he has batted 2nd this year.

But Janish had some weak-ass AB's last night.

In a minor subplot to today's auction, it was on this date in 1993 when Robin Ventura charged Nolan Ryan on the mound, and it all went terribly wrong for Ventura. Is this a foreshadowing of what will happen in the auction?

Yes, I forgot that driving in runs isn't important, it's all about "OPS+" or whatever the hell it is.

Nope, it is an extremely slow process. The first high bid will be announced in about 15 minutes. Then the other side has an hour to review and decide if they want to up the bid. Rinse and repeat.

Come on, Cuban! If he really has as much money as it seems, he should just purposely overbid and make it impossible for the other side to make a rational business decision to beat his bid. That's what I'd do if I have a kagillion dollars.

Interesting. It happened this weekend when the Phillies played the Nats as well. Only it was Peralta instead Phillips. Kerwin Danley was behind home plate and it was also pretty clear he leaned into the pitch.

Sometimes things just work out. That Ciny lineup should be dreadful after the first three.

Nice to see Francisco living up to expectations. 273 avg/273 obp.

I'm just refreshing the twitter linnk cartman posted up thread. Ryan/Greenberg in evaluation of bid; auction is recessed for an hour, I think.

From what I've cobbled together from that guy's tweets, Greenberg/Ryan are planning to appeal based on the argument that Cuban's bid was not timely filed and is therefore not a legitimate.

EDIT: I guess they are going to go forward, and if they don't win, appeal.

The Pirates claimed Chris Resop on waivers from the Braves. I know he's a bit of a AAAA type, and was recently injured. But I'd much rather see what he can do in the starting rotation for the next 5-6 turns than, say, Zach Duke. Duke's pretty well established himself as very mediocre, I'm over it. Instead we'll send Resop to the bullpen and he can pitch an inning every 3 days. Duke's whole career was defined by his rookie season here, he's really never been very good. I'd non-tender him this offseason to be totally honest.

James McDonald is a far better bet to stick in the Buccos rotation than Resop, a career reliever who has never started a ML game and only became a starter in the minors this year.

That catch is a copycat. Not sure how often they do it in Japan, and I don't know exactly when this one occurred, but I thnk I remember seeing this clip maybe 20+ years ago. Maybe it's not that old, but it seems like it.

I got to watch him for a few innings and he looked pretty awesome. Big, slow mid-70s curve and a fastball that was consistently in the 92-93 (and sometimes a bit higher) range. He looks pretty skinny, so I wonder about his long-term endurance as a starting pitcher, but for 2-months of Octavio Dotel this one is looking pretty good.
