Torpedo Billy Burphy (24-3-0 17KO)

Last Meeting
May 12th, 1888: WBG FW World Title: With Murphy leading by a big difference on all scorecards, he is DQed in the 14th round for repeated low blows. Murphy has fought once since, knocking out Abe Willis in the 9th round last December.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: Pluto comes out strong. Murphy starts putting things together halfway through the round, but Pluto takes over and in the last minute landed a couple of bombs that hurt Muprhy. (Round to Pluto, 10-9 Pluto)

Round 2: Murphy takes full control of the round as he landed from a distance all round long. (Round to Murphy, 19-19 Even)

Round 3: Pluto storms out of the gates again and landed huge shot after huge shot. He nearly had Murphy down on the canvas, but he survived. There's already swelling over Murphy's right eye. (Round to Pluto, 29-28 Pluto)

Round 4: Murphy is warned early for holding and hitting. Murphy dominates the first two minutes of the round as he was just beating up Pluto. However, Pluto lands a shot to Murphy's ribcage and knocks him down. Murphy gets up and survives the round. (10-9 to Pluto - wins because of the knockdown, otherwise it would have been Murphy's round, 39-37 Pluto)

Round 5: Pluto again lands bombs and the swelling is getting worse. Murphy is already looking a bit winded from the beating he has taken. (Round to Pluto, 49-46 Pluto)

Round 6: Another round to the champion as Murphy is quickly losing steam. (Round to Pluto, 59-55 Pluto)

Round 7: Pluto is dropping bombs on Murphy at an alarming rate. Murphy is out on his feet and taking shots. It's over! The ref stops the fight!

The referee stops the fight at 1:32 of the 7th round. Your winner, by technical knock out, and STILL WBG FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, YOUNG PLUTO!

WBG Heavyweight Title Fight
June 14th, 1889
John L. Sullivan (29-1-1 23KO)
vs
Pat Killen (32-5-0 28KO)

Background
This is Sullivan's 4th title defense since winning the heavyweight crown in September of 1885 when he knocked out Larry Foley in the first round. In his title defenses, he has defeated number 1 contender Peter Jackson twice, both times by knock out and a technical decision win against Jake Kilrain.

Pat Killen was getting ready for a possible title fight early last year, but he shockingly lost a decision to Dick Matthews in Feb. 1888. He has fought twice since, beating Patsy Cardiff and Jake Knifton by knock out. Not many people are giving Killen much of a chance. He has a suspect chin and has been knocked down a dozen times in his career, including losing two fight by knock out. However, he does pack a big punch, and could upset Sullivan if he gets careless.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: Look out, bombs are dropping everywhere. Killen starts the round off by catching Sullivan with a shot, but he shakes it off and responds with power shots of his own. Both fighters had the other hurt a few times. In the last minute, however, Sullivan was landing a bunch of shots and Killen was not responding. (Round to Sullivan, 10-9 Sullivan)

Round 2: Killen is taking shots now and it's not looking too good for him. Sullivan dominated the round and avoided Killen's power shots. Byt the end of the round, Killen was hurting and carrying his hands low. (Round to Sullivan, 20-18 Sullivan)

Round 3
: Killen is a displaying a good chin right now, but he's already winded and tired as he is getting beat on. He gets in a shot here and there, but it's all Sullivan all the time. I doubt this one lasts much longer. (Round to Sullivan, 30-27 Sullivan)

Round 4: Sullivan had Killen covering up most of the round. Killen did a good job at it, though, as after he got hurt, Sullivan couldn't finish him off. (Round to Sullivan, 40-36 Sullivan)

Round 5: Another round with Sullivan dominating. Killen couldn't get anything going and is already exhausted. (Round to Sullivan, 50-45 Sullivan)

Round 6
: Sullivan comes out and tries to finish off the job. Killen is show a remarkable chin, contrary to many of his previous fights. He's fighting out there, but Sullivan is just too good. (Round to Sullivan, 60-54 Sullivan)

Round 7
: Sullivan continued to pound on Killen. He finnaly knocks him on the canvas with 11 seconds left. Killen can not beat the count with 1 second to go in the round.

The fight ends at 2:59 of the 7th round, your winner by way of knock out, and STILL WBG HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, JOHN L. SULLIVAN!

"The Nonpariel" Jack Dempsey (18-0-1 14KO)
vs
Young Mitchell (23-3-0 18KO)

Historical Info
Young Mitchell was trained by Jack Dempsey, and while there was specualtion in the media for a long time as to who was better, they never fought in the ring due to their friendship. As a result, Mitchell has been overlooked and largely forgotten while Dempsey's title reign lasted into the early 1890s. Young Mitchell was also a fighter that some champions, including the lightweight champion Jack McAullife, avoided fighting.

Background Info
Jack Dempsey won the title on May 5th, 1886 against Irish Jack Burke and has defended the title 4 times since. Once in a 6th round knock out of WC McClellan, a draw with George LaBlanche and a decision over LaBlanche in the rematch.

In December 1887 and February 1888, Young Mitchell lost back to back fights with Bob Fitzsimmons, the first by KO and the second by decision. Since then, he has been running over the top fighters of the division, fighting 7 times in little over a year, winning all of his fights, except for 1, by knock out.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: Mitchell starts off strong but Dempsey quickly turns the tables and takes full control of the round. He ended the round with two powerful flurries. (Round to Dempsey, 10-9 Dempsey)

Round 2: Dempsey controls another round, but Mitchell was able to get ina few hard shots. (Round to Dempsey, 20-18 Dempsey)

Round 3: They both trade power punches as the round starts, but then the action slows in the middle of the round. In the last 30 second, Mitchell starts landing at will and has Dempsey against the ropes as the round ends. (Round to Mitchell, 29-28 Dempsey)

Round 4
: Mitchell starts the round by landing a crushing uppercut that hurts the champion. Dempsey covers up and avoids anymore power shots, but midway through the round Mithcell lands another devastating shot and Dempsey is covering up again for the rest of the round. (Round to Mitchell, 38-38 Even)

Round 5: A slow back and forth with not much action. (Round Even, 48-48 Even)

Round 6: Another slow, uneventful round. Looks like the fighters are taking a round or two off to catch their breath. (Round to Dempsey, 58-57 Dempsey)

Round 7: The rounds starts off with a little bit of back and forth, but Dempsey soon takes over and dominates as he landed at will on Mitchell. (Round to Dempsey, 68-66 Dempsey)

Round 8: Dempsey again dominates the round, but Mitchell lands two power shots that hurt the champion as the round closes. A little bit too late to win the round, though. (Round to Dempsey, 78-75 Dempsey)

Round 9
: Mitchell had Dempsey hurt for much of the round. Several times it looked like Dempsey would drop, but he stays on his feet. (Round to Mitchell, 87-85 Dempsey)

Round 10: Back and forth with Dempsey doing a bit better, but in the last part of the round, Mitchell hurt Dempsey and started bouncing shots off of him. With just a few seconds left in the round, Mitchell drops Dempsey who is saved by the bell. (Round to Mitchell 10-8, 95-95 Even)

Round 11: Jack Dempsey answers back by storming out of the gates and raining destruction on Young Mitchell. He went all out on Mitchell and drops him with a minute left. Mitchell barely makes it back to his feet and Dempsey continues the assualt. He drops him a second time and Mitchell can't answer the count this time.

The fight ends at 2:36 of the 11th round, your winner by knock out, and STILL WBG MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, "THE NONPARIEL" JACK DEMPSEY!

The middleweight division has gotten a lot more interesting. Number 1 contender George LaBlanche suffers a lose at the hands of former champion Irish Jack Burke. Billy McCarthy scores his 16th win as he continues on undefeated. However, his apparent lack of knock out ability, as he only has 1 KO on his record, is keeping him out of favor with a public that loves knock out artists.

WBG Welterweight Title Fight
August 6th, 1889
Paddy Sullivan (18-2-1 6KO)
vs
Paddy Duffy (26-3-1 10KO)

Background Info
In December of 1884, Sullivan and Duffy fought to a unanimous victory for Sullivan. Now, almost 5 years later, both men have developed into the best of the welterweight division and compete for the title.

This will be Sullivan's 3rd title defense after winning it from Lonnie Caderass in February 1887 by split decision. He defeated Tug Collins and Don Murphy both by unanimous decisions.

Duffy has only lost once since his early career defeat to Sullivan, and that was to Tug Collins by disqualification a year ago. He fought a rematch with Collins in Paril earlier this year, winning by unanimous decision.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1: A very slow round to start us off, Duffy doing a bit better. (Round to Duffy, 10-9 Duffy)

Round 2
: Another slow round, this time won by Sullivan. (Round to Sullivan, 19-19 Even)

Round 3: This fight is starting out as a real dud. (Round to Sullivan, 29-28 Sullivan)

Round 4
: Duffy is warned twice about leaning on Sullivan's neck during clinches. (Round to Sullivan, 39-37 Sullivan)

Round 5
: Funally, some action. Sullivan opened up his attack and completely shut Duffy down. He landed several clean shots from the outside and dominated the round. (Round to Sullivan, 49-46 Sullivan)

Round 6: Duffy opens up a bit in the round as the action slows back down. (Round to Duffy, 58-56 Sullivan)

Round 7: Sullivan again opens up and completely dominates the round, scoring at will from a distance. (Round to Sullivan, 68-65 Sullivan)

Round 8: Another dud round. (Round to Sullivan, 78-74 Sullivan)

Round 9
: An exciting round, finally. Sullivan starts off with a few clean shots, but Duffy fights back and starts to control the round, but Sullivan wrestles it back and ends the round scoring at will. (Round to Sullivan, 88-83 Sullivan)

Round 10
: A slower round but still a bit of action. (Round to Duffy, 97-93 Sullivan)

Round 11: More action this round as the two fight it out in spurts. Sullivan does a bit better. The referee took a point away from Duffy for leaning on Sullivan's neck. (Round to Sullivan 10-8 for the foul, 107-101 Sullivan)

Round 12: Another dud round. (Round to Sullivan, 117-110 Sullivan)

Round 13: Starts off slow, but Duffy gains control of the round and dominates the second half of the round. (Round to Dufft, 126-120 Sullivan)

Round 14
: Duffy gets another point deducted for leaning on Sullivan's neck. This round, Duffy controled the action and has a way to win. He opened a cut over Sullivan's right eye. He has one round left to make it back enough to get the fight stopped. (Round to Duffy 9-9 for foul, 135-129 Sullivan)

Round 15
: Duffy opens another cut, this time over the left eye of Sullivan. The doctor looked at it and allowed the fight to continue. Sullivan controls the round and finishes strong with Duffy against the ropes. (Round to Sullivan, 145-138 Sullivan)

My score: 145-138 Sullivan
Ringside Expert: 146-140 Sullivan

After 15 rounds of action, we head to the scorecards...

Judge 1 scores the bout 142-142, Even
Judges 2 and 3 both score the fight 144-139 for you winner, by majority decision....

and STILL WBG WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, PADDY SULLIVAN!

WBG Lightweight Title Fight
October 21st, 1889
Jack McAuliffe (24-0-0 20KO)
vs
Billy Myer (34-4-1 26)

Background Info
McAuliffe defended his title against Myer in Sept. of 1887, winning the fight by a TKO in the 7th round. Since then, he has defended his title twice. He fought Billy Frazier in February of 1888, winning by KO in the 11th round, and he defended against Joe Ellingsworth in November of 1888, winning by TKO in the 6th.

Billy Myer is 0-3 lifetime in title fights, losing all by TKO. He lost twice to Jem Carney and then to Jack McAuliffe. Since his lose to McAuliffe, he has fought 11 times, winning all but two by knock out. In July of this year, he KOed Billy Frazier in the 7th to earn a title shot, and still fought a month later, KOing Jimmy Carroll in the 2nd.

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Round 1
: McAuliffe comes out and immediately hurts Myer with a huge hook. McAuliffe beat the hell out of a hurt Myer for nearly two minutes until he dropped Myer with a nasty uppercut. Myer tried to get up and couldn't get to his feet. This one is over already!!!

The fight comes to an end at 2:13 of the 1st round, your winner by knock out and STILL WBG LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, JACK McAULIFFE!

A crushing defeat for Myer. He fought nearly a dozen times in two years to get his rematch with McAuliffe, and he's kncoked out in under 3 minutes.

Young Pluto (22-0-0 19KO)
vs
Cal McCarthy (21-0-0 11KO)

Background Info

The classic battle of brawler (Pluto) vs boxer (McCarthy) and, as an added bonus, a battle of the unbeatens.

Young Pluto won the title from Torpedo Billy Murphy off a controversial DQ in the 14th round. However, he solidified his status as champion with a TKO victory over Murphy in their rematch.

McCarthy has flown up of the charts, defeating everyone he has faced including former champion Bubba Moonshine. Not only has ne never lost, he has never been knocked down. Even the undefeated champion Pluto has tasted the canvas (all 3 times occured in his first fight with Murphy).

Ding.....Ding.....Ding

Condition: Young Pluto is bone dry coming into the ring, usually not a good sign.

Round 1: Pluto comes out and lands a few shots, but a minute into the round McCarthy hurts the champion and backs him up. Pluto can't get much going after that as McCarthy took complete control of the round. (Round to McCarthy, 10-9)

Round 2: Pluto's left eye is already swelling up. The round was even and uneventful until about 20 seconds left in the round when McCarthy dropped Pluto with a strong cross. Pluto gets right back to his feet and finishes the round. (Round to McCarthy 10-8, 20-17 McCarthy)

Round 3: A very close round that goes back and forth the entire way. Both fighters got some nice shots in. (Round to Pluto, 29-27 McCarthy)

Round 4: Pluto starts the round by landing a huge shot, but McCarthy doesn't waiver and he fights back strong and hard and ends up dominating the round. The swelling over Pluto's left eye has gotten very bad. (Round to McCarthy, 39-36 McCarthy)

Round 5: McCarthy lands a few nice early shots, but it goes back and forth until the end when Pluto lands 2 devastating shots that sends McCarthy to the ropes and covering up. (Round to Pluto, 48-46 McCarthy)

Round 6: Pluto completely dominates the round and now McCarthy has swelling over his left eye. Pluto dominates and hurts McCarthy. However, he is looking tired while McCarthy is still looking like he has some fuel left. (Round to Pluto, 57-56 McCarthy)

Round 7: McCarthy dominates this round and scores from a distance. (Round to McCarthy, 67-65 McCarthy)

Round 8: McCarthy complately controls another round as Pluto looks like he has run out of gas. McCarthy still going strong. (Round to McCarthy, 77-74 McCarthy)

Round 9: The is even through most of it, but Pluto gets cut on his forehead. As the round came to a close, McCarthy landed a few huge shots that hurt Pluto. (Round to McCarthy, 87-83 McCarthy)

Round 10: Pluto may be tired, but he's not stopping. He continues to fight. This round was slower, but Pluto got enough done to try and get back into this fight. (Round to Pluto, 96-93 McCarthy)

Round 11
: Pluto goes down for the second time. McCarthy loaded up the punches, but Pluto was able to survive the round. (Round to McCarthy 10-8, 106-101 McCarthy)

Round 12: McCarthy sends Pluto down to the canvas again early in the round and this time, Pluto can not answer the 10 count.

The fight ends at 1:08 of the 12th round, your winner by knock out and NEW WBG FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD, CAL McCARTHY!

Retired Fighters - 1889
A total of 13 fighters retired this year. Here are the biggest ones

Heavyweights

Paddy Ryan
19-18-0 (17 KO)
Ryan seemed to have a really hard time. He won the World Heavyweight Title in 1880 by defeating Joe Gross with a 2nd round KO. He spent all of 1881 fighting non-title fights, going 6-1-0 (6) in those fights. In his first title defense, he lost to Larry Foley on Marth 7th, 1882 by KO in the 14th. He would go on to lose more fights than he won, and quickly fell out of the top 10. Finally, in 1889, he wins his last two fights and retires.

Charles Lange
30-30-4 (15)
Lang quickly rose to top 10 status, and was considered a possible challenger for Larry Foley in 1882, but a lose to journeyman James Robertson Couper and then a shocking TKO lose to Hall Rolston, who only won 5 fights in his entire career, took him far down the rankings and he never could recover. Lange spent most of his career on the fringe of entering the top 10, but an untimely lose always sent him down the rankings a bit. In 1886, age caught up to him and from 1886 to 1889, Lange would go 3-17-1 (2) before finally retireing after his lose in September to possible new contender Bill Bradburn.

Lightweights

Walter Edgerton 21-18-1 (8)
A journeyman fighter who spent the vast majority of his career ranked in the top 20. He could never quite close the deal against the best fighters, or put together a streak of wins to put him in position to fight for the title, but he was a challenge that a lot of possible contenders could not get passed.

George Taylor 28-17-4 (9)
Former WBG Lightweight Champion. Won the title from Billy Edwards in May of 1883 and lost it in his first defense to Jem Carney 5 months later suffering a TKO in the 15th round.. He would get a rematch against Carney in August 1885, but he was TKOed in the 5th round. In early 1886, he loses two fights that drop him to the fringe of the top 10 and he doesn't make a run to the top of the rankings again. He was ranked in the top 3 from 1882 to the end of 1884. From late 1886 to late 1887, he would go 1-4-1 and and wouldn't get close to the top 10 again. He officialy retired in May.

Javier Malkin 28-31-3 (12)
Malkin spent a lot of his early career ranked in the top 10, however his overachieving would catch up to him and he would win only 1 fight out of 13 between April 1884 to February 1886. He retired in April.

Featherweights

Stirling Stomp 16-12-2 (8)
Former two-time WBG Featherweight champion, although both reigns were short as he didn't have any successful defenses. His first reign started in August 1883 when he won a DQ decision over Bubba Moonshine but lost the title in his first defense in June 1884 against Fernando Juarez. He would win the rematch vs Juarez in December 1884 to start his second reign, but in his first defense, he lost the title to Torpedo Billy Murphy in August 1885. Soon after losing the title for the second time, he lost 2 in a row that sent him to the bottom of the top 10. In late 1887, he peaked into the top 5, but then went on a series of loses that effectively ended his chances for a 3rd title. He retired in September.

Lawrence Wald
25-28-2 (12)
Spent a lot of his early career in the top 5, but could never get a title shot as he would lose a crucial fight whenever he had a chance at a title shot. In the middle of 1886, he would start losing a lot more fights than he won, but he always fought the best fighters out there until the very end. He retired in August.
