Having fun so far. Pretty cool to just float the river down to Whiterun. Haven't been close to getting killed yet though. Pretty easy to kick ass. You guys finding the same thing? Might've helped that I got an elf in that 1st city to become a follower by helping him trick some hot chick into hating some other schmuck. I had him follow me through the whole Gold Claw mission and he was taking fools out with his bow. Also, I paid him 300 for an archery mission, and was able to just take that 300 back from him since he's a follower!

For those playing on XBOX, I just read that if you installed the game to your hard drive, the graphics are scaling down (not up as would be expected). Bethesda says a fix is in the works, but if you are just getting the game, you may want to play off the disc until then.

I installed it to HD almost straight away because it is easily the noisiest 360 game I own in terms of what it puts the system through.
FWIW, what I read was that the issue was mostly involved with 'if you install Skyrim to the HD, but play other games in between sessions.' If you're just marathoning Skyrim, it shouldn't be a problem. |

Reporting from a slow, old, crippled man:
I had blast on this last night. Got through Black Claw, Riverrun, and even made it to "title level" (no more hints than that) in Whiterun. Going around collecting things is a blast! First game I ever played where the big strong hero takes 20 minutes off because he was catching butterflies. Tried making some potions (mostly ended up with poisons), cooking (seems straight forward with a cooking pot), improved some armor and even made a piece. Tanned some leather, and made leather strips. All seems pretty straight forward and fun. Combat wise, I am a sneaky archer. I love sneaking up and hitting someone unawares with the big multiplier. I thought using the bow was going to hard (and it somewhat is), but it is not nearly as hard as it could be. I am thinking of creating a "scout" or "spy" like build (focusing on sneak, archery, lockpicks, and one handed combat). I might dual wield (again simple enough), but I am still lost on what penalties there are for what, what bonuses, and etc. Like, how much of sneak penalty am I getting in heavy armor? Should I be trying to outfit myself in light armor? Will the bonuses I saw you can get in stealth mitigate needing to downgrade? Will the speed of two weapons make the armor bonus of a shield less important? Another question if anyone knows, what happens to a horse you buy when you go into somewhere you can't use it (like a city or dungeon)? Will it just come back to you? |

My honest, albeit less than crystal clear, answer would be that it probably depends upon what you like about those games, as in what draws you to them. If it's the ability to get yourself into the RP aspect of them, like with D&D, then it's probably just a matter of what you need for immersion. I play my Bethesda game characters very true to how I perceive the character, not just what's most expedient at the moment (drives my son crazy when I use that logic in Fallout) so that helps me a lot.

Little thing that drove me slightly crazy: I couldn't figure out how (on 360) to pick up items to move them around.
Googling finally found a description of all the controls & taught me that in Skyrim you press & hold the A button to "grab" an item. It's as though you were going to put the item in inventory but instead of just A button, grab is A & Hold. Figured I'd share that in case I'm not the only person frustrated with it.

BTW, xbox controller is the only way to go on the PC for me. I can't use the mouse for long without pain, but I can use the controller just fine.

Excellent news. I'm almost a little bit OCD about grabbing/moving/piling/rearrangement so that was making me really crazy. Plus I kind of enjoy flinging worthless crap around the room so this helps

Hey, anyone have a hint on alternative storage sites? Are there like banks and stuff? I know I can buy a house now (though I don't have the coin yet) and I imagine you can leave stuff there, but is there like a universal bank anywhere?

I don't think my trick will help you with that. I haven't noticed an on-screen designation for that off-hand, I usually just rely on memory for the differences. Big shit - broadwords, battle axes, etc - are 2-handers, smaller weapons are 1-handers.

Haven't seen anything like that, typically it's going to be houses (although I believe there were a couple of sidequests in Oblivion that gave you extra options). Just be sure to trust no container that you do not own, nearly all of them respawn. I'm dealing with the same thing, focusing on getting the 5k needed for the first house (if I ever regain custody of the game from my son who's finally getting his first hands-on today).

Ouch. Just watched my son get completely stuck in the terrain inside a dungeon mid-combat (360). Glitched right into the middle of some sort of oversized root, had to revert to last auto-save.
A Bethesda trademark really.

As I understand it, the monster leveling occurs with some creatures/situations/areas but not in others.

I know there's one sidequest that requires one, not sure about the rest of the metric quantity though.

Nope that's not where I'm at, but thanks. I'm in a smallish cavern where water runs down one side wall, forms a small stream through the center of the room, and runs through an iron bar gate. A draugh woke up when I came in, and there was a chest in the far end of the cavern. Haven't had the chance today to go back in the game yet to check on the help given to me in thread here. |

I'm playing with a 6950 HD 2GB and having no issues. Only had 1, maybe 2, crash to desktops in my 15 hours of playing.

Personally I've found that it is annoying but it just means you have to go back to town from time to time. There are items that increase your carry limit thogh - I found some steel boots "of lifting" that added 20 or so to my carry limit. |

Also, whoever was saying the game is too easy, I agree- I turned up the difficulty because as a heavy fighter at least, there are few things so far that are tough to kill.

BINGO! Thom it was like one of the first Text adventure games. I know this is a hard concept to grasp considering you are watching waterfalls and fire breathing dragons at the moment, but once upon a time, there were games without pictures. |

Haven't gotten that far in Skyrim obviously, but in Oblivion I had a full set of enchanted armor that added strength (and therefore load capacity) that was my mainstay.
