WAVY10 is probably the worst TV station for weather in the world, which makes it even more funny

Still lots of flooding in and around lower Manhattan. They're concerned about sub-level flooding like basements, tunnels and subways. Lots of people move through that area and while the NYSE is dry, will be hard to get to for a couple days, probably.

Will this result in a serious reduction in the urine smell in the subway at least for a couple of days?

Lost power here in NoVa around 6:35. Sustained winds in the 40-45 range from 9-10:30 with gusts well over 60 during that time. 11:15, with wind still around 35mph and heavy rain, power came back on. Kudos to Dominion VA. They're usually horrible, but they did an outstanding job tonight.

Unfortunately, the power was out for nearly 5 hours, just long enough to spoil the meat/dairy in the fridge.

Here's a Washington Post gallery of pictures from NYC: http://www.washingtonpost.com/nation...washingtonpost

Here's the short version (screen capped from CNN) of that ConEd explosion Logan mentioned.

Looks like nighttime footage of bombing during Gulf War I or something.

Wow, east of DC we got our wind and rain (I'd guess 3-4 inches of rain) but I was so mentally prepared for the worst I don't know what to do with power and calm now.

All of the schools and businesses closed here again today. Road crews are out though trying to clear the street. I lost fences and gutters, but avoided any further damage it seems like. A tree fell in my parking space where I keep my car, but I had actually parked in my wife's spot instead and got lucky there.

I'm thinking after spending the morning cleaning up, today might actually end up being a really nice day off for me

How do you fix the Subway? That's the one that has baffled me from the start of this. I mean, I guess you let it drain and see what doesn't work

No idea. But doesn't this have the Fukushima Daiichi problem? If your pumps are submerged or can't get power or were damaged by being submerged, you can't pump. Then again, I guess that goes back to the "wait until the water recedes and then try it" solution.

Yes, there is. It was keeping up in the early part of the storm, but obviously couldn't do it forever. They have a pump system in place anyway, since the subway system is below the water table levels even on a normal day.

Did anyone hear Chris Christies press conference? Really depressing stuff.

I just tried calling my parents and sister and got nothing from my parents home or cell numbers, they live in Freehold, and got my sisters voicemail, she lives in Brick

My parents live in Toms River, on the Barnegat Bay. We just got a text from them--they were taken by surprise by how fast the water rose--their deck and dock floated away, and their cars are underwater. But they are okay--though it sounds like they are trapped there.

It was a voluntary evacuation, and most of their neighbors decided to stay as well. I'm surprised that they decided to stick it out. But then, I wouldn't say that they are usually more cautious: they typically wait for the Toms River PD to drive by with bullhorns telling them to leave before they move. So, it sounds like they never switched over to a mandatory evacuation.

I'm pretty sure the water will just more evenly distribute the urine throughout the subway system.

Edit: So that means the urine smell might go down a bit in the Journal Square PATH station in Jersey City, but it will correspondingly go up some around Rockefeller Center and the Upper East Side.

My folks in Toms River are ok, but seemingly are acting like it was no big deal. They have no electricity, but my brother and sis-in-law who are mile down the road still have electricity (somehow). They were thinking of calling me this morning to let me know they were ok but figured that I "was at work" so they shouldn't. Sometimes I really just don't get them.

Seeing the pictures of the devestation on Seaside Heights, especially the two piers, just made me lose it. That place was a huge part of my childhood and it was one of the things I most spoke about when I would tell people what I loved about my childhood home and New Jersey in general. It has just gave me such a sense of loss .

Power out for almost 24 hours, but a friend only a mile away just got power back so I am hopeful for restoration soon. I am very glad we only lost a tree way back on the property with no significant damage.
