One thing that last night served to do - it made me really dislike Robin now.

Totally saw it coming....
Well, only because I accidentally saw a comment that made me looking for something unexpected so I watched it looking for something. Hell, still getting over last week's ending. |

That was... different.
I'd rather not have it be "Barney is the father!!" and that's why they get together.

That's why I said "I'd rather not have it be..."
Can we get Maury Povich for the reveal?

That was the only good thing friend and I could say about this episode...and we don't usually mind the "real" or otherwise sad ones.

The actual story in the episode tonight I thought was really really good, it was totally unnecessary and completely detracted from the otherwise really strong story to pull the stupid "lol tricked you about the future" device.

It was a bit strange to have that "just kidding" plot device. It doesn't seem in keeping with the usual way HIMYM does things.

Thought that was a heartbreaking episode. Its been of the few consistencies of the character, and giving it away with the whole "but she'll learn to love kids" would have been worse. I agree the trickery may not have been necessary but it didn't ruin it, IMO.

You know what, fuck this show, it's a piece of shit. They have fucked over every character the past 1 1/2 seasons in the own special way. They fucked Marshall and Lilly last year, Barney a couple episodes ago, Robin this episode, and they have been bending over Ted since the show started. I'm really getting sick of this shit and only watch it because I have invested so much time into it already.

I was listening to Firewall and Iceberg the other day, and Dan Feinberg(Hitfix critic) pretty much agreed that the only reason he was continuing to watch the show was because of the invested time. Will be interesting to see if they pull the plug after next year, or try to keep it going for another season or two.

You mean modeled it after real life . People get screwed over but learn to overcome it. HIMYM has always been slightly more realistic in this regard.

One thing I will say is that Ted looks very good in this episode. He is coming back from the land of douchehood very nicely.

Forgot that I still had the Glitter episode on the DVR...
If Glitter's beaver takes 6 inches of wood every half hour and Sparkle's breaver takes 8 inches every 25 minutes, how much wood will I need to keep them full for the three day trip?.... |

Yeah - they can go fuck themselves with episodes like that. Waste of my fucking time. As soon as I saw the narrative setup I was like "oh boy...a waste of my time episode...great! /sarcastic eyeroll" Shit-sandwiches like that episode really make me not want to watch anymore. At this point I don't really "watch" the show though I guess - I just have it on as background noise so if something truly interesting happens I can jump-back on the DVR and see what it was. Last night I don't think I looked up at all (save to find out who the obligatory chick Barney was chasing after was).

I'm weird, I guess. I liked it. I enjoy those multiple narrative arcs things, where things tie in.

Someone needs to fire Cobie Smulders' stylist. Some of the clothes and hairstyles this year have been awful.

I think part of the problem is the moving of setting. Had this episode happened at their apartment in the city would we feel the same way?

The plot of the episode was just terrible. Chris Elliot is a terrible actor and I honestly loath Martin Short is just about everything he does. So it's a one two three punch. |

The structure with the rooms and party falling apart was fine I thought... but none of the actual details of the story were funny. Nothing about that episode made me laugh sadly.

Yes - if the structure had been used for an interesting/funny storyline it would have been great. But it was so unfunny.

I always enjoyed the episodes that messed around with structure, and let's be honest, basically every episode does in one way or another. I just re-watched the episode where Ted is about to miss his flight to Chicago because he was in court, and they keep going further back to figure out who was to blame. One of my favorite episodes because the Marshall/Barney storylines surrounding the marathon, the lead-up, and the aftermath were fucking hysterical. Same with The Platinum Rule episode..."it seemed like a great idea, but it wasn't" was repeated constantly going back and back. It wasn't the structure of those that made it great, it was the actual content.
This was just a big swing and miss. |

I like multiple threaded shows if they are done right and have a good story behind them. I like a little of the show, where each thread revealed a little more about the previous stories but overall the stories themselves were kind of weak.

I'm just about done with season one and I'm already seeing the forthcoming dynamic and how it is going to get beaten over the viewer's head. I hate spineless people in their decisions and I think this is the one almighty rule of will they/won't they type relationships. The sad part is we know they won't. This would have been an amazing series written for three seasons and ending it there. Barney seems to be the only one with a spine and he's awesome.

This would be my reaction. Though I REALLY hope that was drunk train Ted talking and then he has to try to reverse this without really hurting Robin's feelings or something. Though rest of ep was good.

I am almost to the point now that I feel like this show is not capable of being funny anymore. The episodes where they just try for pure humor miss completely and it seems like they are going for serious things about 5x as often as they should and the serious moments have completely lost their impact.
