I wanted to update the thread with the latest developments but first I have to say thank you to everyone who has sent me well-wishes, good thoughts and prayers over these last 2 weeks. It's been very very difficult and your support has really helped.

Now to the bad news. My wife tried to check herself out of the hospital on Saturday against medical advice but I filed another detention order to keep her in over the weekend. The judicial hearing on that detention order was this morning and I lost - the judge overruled the order and said my wife was free to go. The law in Virginia makes is extremely difficult to detain someone unless they have a documented history of physical violence.

So anyway, my wife got out against the very strong recommendation of her hospital's psych, her regular psych, the social worker, and the independent evaluator for the hearing. The first thing my wife said she was going to do was "go take" our daughter.

Well, I was afraid of that, so I went home, packed up a few days worth of stuff, and me and my daughter have hit the road. We're at a friends house in town tonight but we'll be moving on tomorrow most likely.

Fortunately, I know I have the law on my side when it comes to custody, so I have no fears there. My wife knows that when I hear from one of her doctors that they approve of her being out of the hospital and she has started an out-patient program, only then will I bring my daughter home. I've cleared my daughter's absence with her school with the blessings of the principal, and now I just need to stay aware and keep my daughter safe.

To be clear, this is a nightmare. I cannot believe things have gotten to this point, but my mission is pretty clear and I'm okay with that.

Keep us in your thoughts and prayers. I don't need to crash at any of your places - yet.

Todd

Damn. When is school out for you daughter? I would hate that she's at school and mom comes by to take her out early for an 'appointment' and now your wife has your daughter.

I'm really sorry to hear this and I hope that somehow your wife has a moment of clarity and gets back on her meds and there's no big hassles that you will have to deal with in addition to what you already are.

Holy cr*p, TZ, I just cannot imagine what you must be going through. What sort of judge would overrule the recommendations of the psychiatric professionals and create a potentially disastrous situation?

Hang in there, man.

Sorry to hear things aren't going well, Todd. You will continue to be in my prayers.

King of New York, I used to work at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and saw some VERY psychotic patients.. what laymen would call bat shit crazy. There was one judge in the area who was infamous for releasing everyone. One day, I got him via the luck of the draw. He released a guy who had tried to cut off his own penis just 2 weeks earlier and was still psychotic as all get out. Some judges make bad decisions in these type of cases.

I was thinking about this thread today. Sorry you're going through this Todd, I can't imagine what it's like to be in your situation. Sounds like you're doing the right thing by pulling her out of school to keep her safe.

Virginia is pretty consistent that most schools get out between like the 15th-21st.

The good thing in this situation (although probably questionable academically) is that the SOLs (big standardized test to meet national standards) just finished and schools pretty much stop teaching for the next couple of weeks - so if Todd has to keep her out, it shouldn't have a big impact.

That's definitely a good thing then. If they are all done, I would for sure keep her out of school.

Todd, again, I want to say that it must be brutal to be going through all of that. You are an amazing person for putting your daughter first, and for enduring this horrid situation over and over. You are a man's man, taking responsibility, protecting the weak, and still staying by your wife as you are able. My thoughts and concerns are with you.

Hope that you are able to continue making the right decisions in a scenario where everything must feel like lose/lose. It sounds like you are doing the right things but working against a system that fundamentally doesn't get this kind of situation "right", if that makes sense.

Todd,

If you need a place to crash in the short term and you're heading toward Indiana, I've got an extra bedroom, even it's just for a night on the way to elsewhere.

Take care of yourself and your daughter.

Todd,

I don't even want to imagine what you and your family is going through. Have they ever figured out what caused this? Was it a medical issue, such as a stroke (like you had said) or just a dormant problem that overtook her normal rational self when the catalyst of the break-in occurred?

God bless your family, man. You guys need it.
