Sorry -- I must have missed it entirely. I'd have no problem playing with some hose rules (including that one), I just missed the original discussion about it. I'm indifferent, in that event (honestly). I'm fine with a self-imposed restriction... though it might require us to re-evaluate some of our recruiting targets. |

Nah, let's go without it. The only one I'll keep is a single phone call + visit per week.

How about DT Allen Castillo? Run-inclined, ranked 6th at the position, good attitude, decent academics, and nobody is after him yet. Compton is also a run-first guy, and is also unpursued thus far. Salcido is likely to be more ready-to-play, but is a lesser player in most other respects. How about Castillo and Compton? |

Sounds good to me. I don't have access to TCY til about 2. What is Castillo ranked and what is his athletic prep?
And does it seem best to go after the two DEs we contcted in week one, for now? EDIT: Visit and Offer(If we should) Compton and Castillo, Craig. Last edited by vex : 09-27-2004 at 11:57 AM. |

Oops - closed the game. Castillo was rated pretty highly -- he's the 6th-rated DT, higher than both of the other guys... maybe an 81/100 rating (from memory)? His Ath Prep was something like 35 -- about the same as Compton, not as high as Salcido.

Here's this week's recruiting update (before the week was run, but showing visits, phone calls, scholarship offers, etc.)
Vex & Quik - I tried to fit everyone in, but we ran out of on-site visits pretty early on. I therefore had to do just call some possible recruits. I tried to spread the visit invites around while staying as close as possible to Vex's recommendations. One thing we missed because of last weeks last of visit requests are scholarship offers to our guards. Therefore, I took a couple phone calls to stay in contact with them. Next week, I'd like to have them visit and offer scholarships and make that a priority. Code:

NC State at Ohio
N.C. State (-7) at Ohio, TV4
67 degrees and raining. Ohio wins the toss and elects to receive. The first kickoff in FOFC's TCY Groupthink travels 70 yards. Touchback. Ohio starts at their own 20 yard line.

NC State at Ohio - 1st quarter
After an offensive holding penalty on the first play from scrimmage, Ohio tries to run off tackle and all-everything Herman Sanderson drops him for a one yard loss! Ohio gives it to Matthews on 2nd and 21 and Sanderson again blasts him, this time for a 3 yard loss, bringing up 3rd and 24 at the Ohio 6-yard line. A false start penalty makes it 3rd and 27 (good grief). Ohio's Saleaumua runs a trap up the middle for a 16 yard gain (tackled by Thurman Arnswaldt & Neal Hollins). Big play, but still a 3 and out
Ohio punts, and Wertz calls a fair catch at the Ohio 49. 12:59 left in the 1st. Bring on the offense! Wow, despite Ohio's 8-man front , Orlando Macri takes the handoff and runs up the middle for 15 yards (key block by RT Kevin Miller). Gino Linquist carries the ball next and gains 3 yards. 2nd and 7 at the 31. Macri gets the call on 2nd down and runs around the right end for 2 yards, bringing up a 3rd and 5 at the 29. Looks like our first pass attempt...Kenny Spragan can't find anyone open so does it himself with a 5 yard scramble - first down! We try a pass again on 1st down - Kenneth Wertz is open and Spragan connects - 22 yard pass play to the 2 yard line! On 1st and goal, Spragan finds Pete Dodge in the flat for the 2 yard TD pass! Allen kicks the extra point, and it's N.C. State 7, Ohio 0 - 10:13 left in the 1st. 6 plays, 49 yards, 2:46 Short kickoff by Allen (52 yards) and a 16 yard return gives Ohio the ball on their own 29. Incomplete pass by the Ohio QB on 1st down, and listen to this commentary, "NCST 73 Schmaltz uprooted and discarded OHIO 73 Mandel and hurried the quarterback." 2nd down pass is dropped by the Ohio receiver - 3rd and 10. 8-yard run off left guard - tackled by CJ Schmaltz. 3 and out! Whoa...Ohio surprises and picks up the first down (despite our 8-man front). 9 yard gain around the left end, Neal Hollins gets the stop. 1st and 10 Ohio at their own 46. Another stop by Hollins on a run around the right end - 3 yard gain. Ohio tries yet another run around the right end, but this time CJ Schmaltz and Herman Sanderson drop the ballcarrier for a 2 yard loss. 3rd and 9. An incomplete pass on 3rd down...I assume they'll punt this time. They do, and Wertz returns the ball to our own 10. Will have to be a long drive this time. Let's see how we do. Ohio is staying in an 8-man front, daring us to pass. Linquist gets the call on first down gaining 3 yards up the middle. Spragan fades back on 2nd down and finds Donald Clark open for a 21 yard gain. 1st and 10 at the 34 - Spragan throws away from double coverage in the direction of Kenneth Wertz, but it's defended by the Ohio cornerback. Spragan throws behind the line to Pete Dodge who muscles his way 15 yards on his own for a first down. 1st and 10 at the 48. False start, and somehow we suffer our first injury - Gino Linquist. Doesn't say it's serious, so we're hopeful. Spragan finds Wertz on the short pass and Wertz gains 10 yards after the catch for a 14 yard gain. 2nd and 1 at the Ohio 43. Macri gains 5 yards off the right guard for the first down (RG Cedric Wayne knocked the Ohio defender flat to create the hole). Spragan again fades back and finds the RB Orlando Macri in the flat - Macri twists, turns and rumbles for an additional 17 yards. 1st and 10 at the Ohio 18. BJ Ramirez gets his first carry of the game and takes it up the middle for 5 (key block by Miller). False start again. 2nd and 10, and Ramirez is stopped cold for a 1 yard loss. Pete Dodge gets hurt on the play, and this IS a serious injury. ARGH. 3rd and 11 at the 19. Spragan finds TE Jack Mackie for 11 yards - first down! False start AGAIN. Macri runs offtackle for 3 yards. 2 and goal at the 10. Macri runs around the right end for 4, bringing up a key 3rd and goal at the 6. Controversial call as Macri runs it off the left tackle and is stopped 3 yards short of the goal line. Allen connects on the 20 yard FG to give NC State a 10-0 lead with 21 seconds left in the 1st. 13 plays, 102 yards, 6:51 A 60 yard kickoff is returned 69 yards to the N.C. State 26 yard line, ending the first quarter. NC STATE 10, Ohio 0, end of first quarter NC State: 9 first downs, 47 yards rushing, 104 yards passing Ohio: 1 first down, 30 yards rushing, 0 yards passing

N.C. State at Ohio, 2nd quarter
N.C. State 10, Ohio 0
1st and 10 Ohio at our 26. Ohio runs around left end for a 12 yard gain (SS OJ Brooks gets the stop). Another run, another stop by Brooks - but this time for a 3 yard loss. 2nd and 13 at our 17. A draw play doesn't fool Steve Durham and Henry Westbrook - 1 yard loss. 3rd and 14. A 3rd down pass is completed, but only to the 15 (tackle by Arnswaldt). A 32 yard FG attempt is missed wide right! We escape unscathed! 1st and 10 at our own 20. Macri gets a block by Newt Lentzner and pushes forward for 8 yards. Ramirez goes offguard but is stopped for no gain. 3rd and 2. Spragan fades to pass but overthrows Wertz. Our first 3 and out . McCarthy punts 59 yards (!), returned for 4. Ohio starts at their own 17. Great punt! NT David Finley hurries the quarterback on 1st down forcing an incompletion. Finley gets the stop on 2nd down after a 2 yard gain by the Ohio runningback. On 3rd and 8, we get our first sack of the year! WILB Neal Hollins drops Saleaumua for a 5 yard loss! 3 and out! 35 yard punt, returned 5 yards by Kenneth Wertz. We start on their 44 yard line. Ramirez goes offtackle for a yard. So far I've been less than impressed with BJ's running. Spragan connects with Trent Brodie for a 7 yard gain - 3rd and 2. Jack Mackie collects the pass on 3rd down and takes it down to the 23 yard line. We try and confuse them by running a QB draw on first but it only nets us 3 yards. 2nd and 7. Ramirez gets the call and gains two yards up the middle. 3rd and 5. Spragan finds Trent Brodie again and he's stopped just short of the goal line after a 17 yard gain. On first and goal Spragan throws it to Kenneth Wertz for his second TD pass of the game! Allen kicks the EP, and we're ahead, 17-0. 7:25 left in the half. 7 plays, 44 yards, 3:02 60 yard kickoff by Allen is returned 95 yards for a TD. Good grief. We need to fill the special teams coach position as soon as possible! N.C. State 17, Ohio 7 - 7:17 left in the half. Touchback on the kick. We start at our own 20. I'm hoping the shock of the TD doesn't shift momentum. Spragan has officially found a new favorite target: Trent Brodie. A 21 yard pass on first down proves it . A screen to Orlando Macri, and he finds an opening for a 9 yard gain. Spragan hands off to Macri, but he's stopped cold for a 3 yard loss. 3rd and 4. Macri has 8 carries for 37 yards so far. Ugh...apparently I forgot to hit pause....but apparently we turned it over and Ohio ran a few plays. Sigh - sorry guys, I guess we'll find out what happened in the log. Ohio has it 4th and 6 at our 30 yard line. They go for it, and OJ Brooks stops their RB after a 1 yard gain. Turned over on downs. Spragan to Macri for a 12 yard pass on first down, ball on the 41 yard line, 2:44 left. Macri takes the Cedric Wayne block for 7 yards. Short pass to Macri nets 3 yards and a first down. 1:17 left at the Ohio 49. Incomplete pass to Brodie on first down. Incomplete pass, 1:04 left. One yard completion to Earnest Sweeney. 4th and 9 - 57 secs left. We stay cautious and punt - 33 yarder returned for 13 yards. Ohio has the ball at their 28 with 46 seconds left. Ohio is playing it safe too, content to stay within 10 at halftime. A run up the middle nets 6 yards (tackle by Bubba Flynn). On 2nd down Ohio tries to catch us sleeping, but we have Arnswaldt and Hollins blitzing. Hollins blasts through the line and collects his 2nd sack of the day! 3rd and 9 at the 29. Westbrook defends the 3rd down pass - 4th and 9 - 4 seconds in the half. Ohio punts, and the ball is downed at the NC State 20. End of the second half. NC State 17, Ohio 7 N.C. State: 15 first downs, 65 yards rushing, 188 yards passing Ohio: 2 first downs, 37 yards rushing, 7 yards passing Complete domination on our part. The only thing keeping them in the game is our horrible special teams coverage.

Note to self: Perform writeups in Microsoft Word and copy/paste it to the board. Was just completing my 3rd quarter write-up and I mistyped and apparently hit some bizarre code sequence that closed my browser window. Whatever.

Ohio State? Ohio Schmate, I say! Let's kick their arses!
We're one and OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I was glad to see a good performance by the O-line. I would have liked to see them dominate the game a little more with a couple more key run blocks, but they look good so far. We're going to need to block better if we're going to run on Ohio State. |

Sorry, but I've got a few recruiting questions. Why did we visit Ansell again and we definitely shouldn't have visited Feliciano, he wasted nearly 900 points to visit a player we already knew about. And if we would just visit or phone a player, instead of both, we could spread our recruiting out better.

Vex, I took "phone and visit" as phone him and visit him, not phone and offer a visit. My bad, but we need to think of a terminology to separate "visit a recruit" and "offer the recruit to visit". How about "offer visit" when we want to invite the guy back to our place ?

BTW, check out the Yards After Catch for our receivers. It seemed the entire game Spragan was throwing it short (1-3 yards) and our receivers would gain an additional 10 yards on their own. Very impressive, but I'm not sure that happens against Ohio State.

Interesting twist -- since the file has the same name as the last one, FireFox seems to insist that I don't actually need to download the new file, I can just unzip the old one. I'll figure it out, but this seems to be a little bit too idiot-proofed. |

Checking my 2nd quarter commentary where I lost track of hitting the pause button...it wasn't a turnover, they blocked our punt. Hmm... again, special teams mistakes.

I'm not overly experienced with TCY, but might our short passes be a bit high? Passes completed to the 3 WRs averaged only 3.79 yards in the air. They gained an average of 11.57 YAC on them.

Cool - we are still the only school pursuing DT Allen Castillo. I like him a good deal, and it would be awfully nice to bring down a solid run-stopping DT prospect, even if he'd have to redshirt before being ready to play (an unknown). I'd like to follow up with him - a couple calls, at least, over the next couple of weeks.
I think we are a longshot to land Ansell, but Feliciano might not be impossible. Ohio State is the gorilla in the hunt so far, but they don't have an offer in -- we do. I fully expect Feliciano will attract extra attention in the next couple of weeks, but right now, we're right in there. (He's the #8 prospect nationwide) We probably have an outside shot with DT Salcido as well - we're tied in prestige on his list. But we don't have an offer in, and GaTech does, along with four other schools. DT Leonard Compton is probably heading to Indiana - better academics than us, and a much closer school. Too bad, but I think we walk away there. DT Bo Connolly - forget it, Michigan wants him. It's over. So, depending on how much capital we have to invest at the DL positions, I'm thinking: Keep after DT Castillo - calls in week 3/4 and 5, perhaps. Let's get calls in to DT Salcido and DE Feliciano for week 3 - and see how their lists develop If we could bring own two of those three, we'd be in very nice shape along the DL. |

FWIW: We have the screen pass set to 12%, short pass to 50%, 11-20 yard pass to 20%, 21-30 at 8% and long pass at 5%. I think our OC was looking for a ball control passing attack against Ohio - it certainly worked

I wanted ball control, no turnovers and to get the ball to our playmakers, which seemed to have worked. I'll wait to see our scouting report on Ohio State before I make any changes. I'm a little weary of throwing the ball downfield with our QB. |

Hmmm...we're mostly using the FB as a blocker as well as an occasional receiver...unfortunately Withers stinks as a blocker just as much as Sweeney does. I know Withers' pass catching is better, but Sweeney is a converted TE and he did have 2 catches last week. I'm for keeping the redshirt, but I'd like to hear from the backs coach.

Great opening game everyone. (Just got home from work and didn't have time to check today). I think we did what was expected on both sides of the ball. Well maybe not on special teams. I can rip them cause we don't have a coach right??

To all my defensive coaches...
First off...congrats on the shutout of the Bobcats. Secondly...do any of the three of you have experience with the 50 defense? I noticed that the Buckeyes run the Double Wing and I am contemplating switching it up for this game. Both of our DE's and OLB's are great at stopping the run so I think we may have a shot at "controlling" their running game a bit...but I am really worried about their two great WR's. So would switching to the 50 really open up their passing game? Even though they only passed it 12 times in their opening game.

I think our only chance at beating a team like Ohio State may be to overload the run defense and make them beat us with the pass. We'll get killed if we spread our personal all over.

First. Go Kenny Spragan. Thank you. Second, the quick report on our walk on, Jimmy Bush. Aside from being about what you'd expect from a walkon, he's our best academic QB (which ain't saying much, but at a fair aspiration and good intelligence, he won't drag us down). Could have been much worse there. As far as next week's playbook for my QB...I think he can handle a little more on the longer routes, if Ohio State looks week against the pass. Obviously we played a weak opponent, but a 75% completion rate and no int's is impressive no matter what. If you're wavering on letting him throw downfield a little more, err on the side of aggresiveness. We're gonna have a rough time vs Ohio State anyway, may as well see what this kid can do. Quick recruiting check...odds are we ain't gonna get Conrad Kramer, as he's visiting Michigan and Miami of Florida. Prolly not worth trying to fight those two off. I think we've got a very good shot at Nate Fink or Ben Robinson, however. |
