I'm pretty sure in that situation I would just flatten myself to the floor by my seat and hope for the best. Unless I was with my wife and kids, then I'd try to flatten them under me or the seat and hope for the best.

It also strikes me reading this thread and the comments by that jackhole in AZ that we might be being a little unfair - who is to say some of the dead or injured didn't try to rush him and got blown away trying? In the chaos I'm sure nobody would notice who was running where and what their intentions were. In a theater your options would be either go over the seats or into the aisle which would pretty much make you a sitting duck.
I also notice that a disproportionate number (3 or 4?) of the deceased were servicemen, who would generally be the ones trained to go after the shooter. Just because nobody succeeded in taking this guy down doesn't mean that nobody tried |

Fight or flight is a very powerful instinct. And fight is almost never an option until you're cornered.
It's hard to train your mind to be aggressive in these situations.

At the time I remember thinking "thank god he didn't have access to grenades or other explosives".
Now reading that he rigged up 30 home made grenades at his apartment I think we can be very thankful he didn't use those in the theater. I can't imagine how destructive and devastating that would have been tossed into an unsuspecting packed movie theater. Very scary thought |

Just a guess, but that seems to suggest he wanted a more direct and personal attachment to the massacre by using the guns and shooting people, rather than slipping in through the exit, disorienting them with smoke or tear gas, and then lobbing 2-3 grenades and running out the door.

You know, I think this was a laudable, humane gesture on Bale's part, but I have to wonder if he consulted with the psychiatric team before showing up. I'd imagine at least some of those victims have a bit of PTSD that would be triggered by anything Batman related at this stage in their recovery. It's one of those weird situations where I think his heart was in the right place and it says a ton of good things about his character (when he's not screaming at light guys)...but I have mixed feelings about it. |

I've always wondered this, not being a psychiatrist and all: how often does stuff like that happen. You know, stuff that makes you go "hm... this person is not in a good place"? I have to think that happens daily to most psychiatrists, right? Their job is to treat people will real mental illness. But not all go out and "go nuts"- in fact, most live normal, productive lives.

It's definitely sad what happened, but this is ridiculous. In what shape or form is this the theater's fault? Are we going to require undercover US Marshalls now for each moving showing? Do we need to ban midnight showings?

Exactly. Nowhere in the article did it say they were suing the gun manufacturers (which I think has been tried in the past unsuccessfully), or the companies that sold the ammunition or anything to do with the weapons or clothing used in the crime. Nope. Lets sue the movie theater because an alarm didn't go off and Warner Bros for making violent movies. Fuck, why don't they also sue the manufacturer of the vehicle that he used to drive to the theater? Sue the gas station that allowed him to put gas in his vehicle. Sue the bank where he deposited his money and then withdrew it to pay for his arsenal. Sue the state and city for building roads that allowed him to be able to get to the theater. Sue his parents for conceiving him. I'm sure there's some ambulance chaser out there that could come up with plenty of other things to sue for other than the person actually responsible for the whole thing.

Why would a door that is used to allow the theater to clear out faster (that every theater I've been to has) after the movie ends have an alarm attached?
God, I hope that goes nowhere. Edit: You're going to sue Warner Bros. for making a "too-violent" movie that your client paid to see. Fuck you, sir. Last edited by bronconick : 07-25-2012 at 03:35 PM. |

I do wonder how someone gets shot in a theatre like this, and then gets handed a 2 million dollar hospital bill. That just doesn't remotely seem fair at all.

It isn't fair and that shouldn't happen. Any insurance or property or anything of value that the guilty party has, is what should be paying for it.

Article makes it look like the package with the evidence of guy's intentions to kill people never got to the psychiatrist, and languished in the CU mailroom until police came across it. More generally, though, as for psychological worker's professional duties with respect to patients that talk about committing crimes/violence... The general legal rule is that clinicians with serious concerns that a client may imminently harm himself or others must warn possible victims as an exception to the general rule of confidentiality. The clinician may notify law enforcement in order to try to reduce the risk of the danger. tl;dr - an important professional judgment on the part of the shrink, but when s/he's pretty sure that a client is going to harm others, s/he should tell any identified potential victims and the police. |
