I guess I can retire with Semantle now. I use the same 20 words to quickly start each game - from a piece that I won't share right now to avoid spoilering. It gives me somewhat of a variety (maybe not enough, word 9 came in at 953/1000) to figure a couple of things out about the word. Tonight, got the word in 13. Not much chance I'll ever do better.

Yeah, I (too) think it's difficult enough as it is. Even with a good variety of your first 4 or 5 words, it's a close call to then get all the 4 words in one shot.

That said, in a way I made my own sort of house rule as I try to come up with a new set of starter words every day. I find it challenging and fun to keep trying to come up with different 5-letter words on the 1st guess each day and then puzzle my way into other 5-letter words with unused letters in the 2nd and 3rd guesses. Usually I get down to the 4th guess to have 20 or at least 19 different letters. But it still leads to usually getting the 4th word on the final guess.

Thirteen again tonight (guess 12 was 992/1000, so I took the shot). Seems like the developer has a theme.

With Quordle, I've been following the rule that it must be a legitimate guess for one of the four. But that could almost mean anything. Haven't failed yet, but yesterday's illustrates how it could easily happen.

Today's was hard enough 'as is', I think.

I do wordle in hard mode but it doesn't feel like a realistic option for quordle. I just start with three words using 15 different letters and go from there, seems to work well.

I think I went overboard by doing hard mode but also making myself stick to one quadrant until it was solved. I'll just do what you and Jim do and make each guess a "hard mode" guess but let myself jump from one to another.

I do jump between quadrants, but if I have greens in some but not others, the guess has to align with one of the greens - I don’t give myself the out of choosing a quadrant with just one orange

I suppose it entirely falls into the house rules category. I go straight to the quadrant I know least about, as a strategy (no misses yet), but it would be a lot harder doing the opposite.

Is the nine-guess limit too low to be reasonable, then?

I'm finding semantle interesting, but I don't think I would without a thesaurus. The trick there seems to be in trying to simplify from what you have, rather than the reverse.
