Hrm, just realised I haven't been to the cinemas in a hell of a long time. Last movie I saw was probably Star Wars 3, which I'd give a 6/10.
On DVD the last movie I saw was Seppuku, and it scores a 10/10. One of my top 5 films.

Yeah, it's a samurai film, often titled hara-kiri when sold outside of Japan. It's not an Akira Kurosawa film, but it's every bit as good and MUCH darker than anything Kurosawa did. Stars Testuya Nakadai, who was the "baddie" in Sanjuro & Yojimbo, as well as the main guy in Ran.

Finally got around to watching Four Brothers. Rate it 4/10
Was disappointed in the movie, after hearing so many good things about it. I thought Andre did a damn good job though. |

DVD: Oldboy: 8/10 -- Now THAT'S a twist ending. Of course, I like the films that aren't afraid to push the boundaries.
Movies: Saw II: 9/10 -- Equal in footbal with the original, with higher production values. |

I'm getting the feeling that we may have similar cinematic tastes Groundhog. Have you seen Sword of Doom, also starring Tatsuya Nakadai, and also very dark? By any chance are you a fan of modern director (and actor/producer/write/comedian/game show host) Takeshi Kitano? |

Crimes & Misdemeanors - very good, easily the best Woody Allen movie I've personally seen (not a whole lot) 8/10
Havoc - Very neutral on this movie, couldn't really recommened it, but didn't hate it. The first third is actually pretty tough to watch, you feel so embarassed for the characters (i believe this is quite intentional). 5/10 Storytelling - Liked the first story enough, didn't really care for the second (much longer) story. I'm not sure this movie knew what it was trying to say. 4/10 Survive Style 5+ (Japanese) - Outstanding visuals, some hilarious comedic moments, and a generally good multi-faceted story. Incredibly impressive for a directiorial debut. 8/10 |

Oh, and a re-watching of Jackie Brown. This is an outstanding movie, and now has a pretty sizable lead in my mind for Tarantino's best movie. The characters are real, the world around them feels real and large, and the acting is absolutely top-notch from everyone involved. This is a movie where a great number of little moments put it over the top. I'm more impressed with it each time I see it. Also quite easily his most "grown up" movie, and I'm guessing the fact that it is adapted rather than an original screenplay has something to do with this. It makes me wonder if he wouldn't be even better with a regular co-writer or an editor he can really take advice from. 8/10.

I haven't seen Sword of Doom yet, but that's been on my "must buy" list for a long time. Actually, might go grab it from amazon.com now I'm a big fan of Takeshi Kitano, but really need to see more of his films. I caught 'Dolls' by accident one night and thought it was brilliant, and I liked him in both Zatoichi and Battle Royale, too. Anything you'd recommend outside of these 3?

I'm not thesloppy, but i've seen a great number of Kitano films: You shold check out Brother (a fair amount of which is actually in English), Hana-Bi (Fireworks), and for a more light-hearted movie (but quite good) Kikujiro. I also liked Kids Return a great deal, but it's a pretty big departure for his other stuff, and he doesn't have a role in the movie, unlike everything else where he's the lead. |

Cthomer summed some of his other films pretty well. Kikujiro, Brother and Hana-Bi are all excellent, and somewhat divergent flicks. I'd put Kids return and Dolls on a lvel below those, but that's just personal taste. Violent Cop is pretty good, but I'd avoid Getting Any? which is a screwball sex comedy (?), that's alright but probably wouldn't leave anybody with a special feeling for his abilities. My two favorites by far are Sonatine and Boiling Point (not the Wesley Snipes vehicle, ufortuately) and I'd highly recommend both. They're both pretty much Yakuza movies, although each with a little twist. Sonatine follows a group of gangsters to the beach as they attempt to conduct a futile business trip that slowly turns into an exile. Boiling Point focuses on a couple of odd, apathetic minor-league baseball players who mix-it-up with the local Yakuza in order to revenge the beating of a friend. Sonatine seems to be regarded as Kitano's best film, and stylistically it's definitely a cut above Boiling Point, but I prefer the latter by a hair, probably because Kitano plays a supporting role as a completely over-the-top anti-hero that is a startling change of pace from his usual stoic silence. Moments of ruthless violence punctuate both, but if you've seen Battle Royale I don't think you'll have a problem. While we're on the subject of modern Japanese directors, anybody familiar with Takashi Miike, and specifically 'Ichi the Killer'? Holy crap, that's the most ruthless movie I've ever seen...actually kept me from sleeping, and genuinely horrified me...yet I ended up deciding that I really liked the film, although it took me about a week to come to that decision, and it would probably take another year for me too consent to watching it again. Miike's a freak who makes like 5 movies a year, and apparently every single one of them are completely outrageous, although I wouldn't necessarily say they're all worth watching. |

You should watch Audition if you like Miike. Also, Eli Roth got some advice from Miike in the making of his new movie Hostel, which from it's initial appearance is VERY Miike in the way it's filmed. |

Well, I'm still not sure that I would say I LIKE Miike, but I do find his stuff incredibly intriguing. I've seen Audition, and liked it (again that doesn't seem like the right word to use), but it didn't effect me as much as Ichi. Same for the Dead or Alive's, although I found those much easier to laugh at, even though I've heard some people describe Ichi as comic...I never want to be alone with those people. Have you seen Happiness of the Katakuris? Really, REALLY weird. Just think Miike musical.....with claymation. Aptly described as The Sound of Music for serial killers. I'm so happy to find out that there's some Asian cinema fans on the board, I can rarely convince my friends to watch the stuff, because I think they associate foreign films with art-house movie snobbery. On the contrary, my attraction to Asian cinema simpy boils down to the fact that I enjoy gangsters, action, war, unhappy endings, and a somewhat slower pace than that offered by the typical music-video director. Hong Kong and Japanese flicks fit the bill perfectly. But if the ladies ask, it's all aobut my dedication to the art. |

thanks to Netflix, have seen a few recently. all 3 were better than I expected.
First: Mr and Mrs Smith. 7/10. Not too bad. then it was Fantastic Four. I don't get why this one is getting so blasted so badly. it was decent. not great, but decent. 7/10. and, finally, The Island. I knew nothing about it going in except that it was a disappointment. And when the opening credits rolled and I saw the words "Michael Bay" I figured I was in for a stinker. But heck if the thing wasn't really good. Story was good, acting was good, effects were good, Johannson was SMOKING hot. Bay is a hack, but his style actually worked well here. A pleasant surprise: 8/10

Havoc: This movie really wasn't very good, but it had what it promised, Anne Hathaway's breasts. The story was boring, the acting was boring, and Bijou Phillips should probably have been shot 6 years ago. As it is, the movie is a 3/10, but a 9/10 for Anne Hathaway and her breasticles, probably in the top 5 of hot hollywood actresses.
Serenity: I enjoyed the movie, it blew the shitty Sith out of the water. I hadn't really seen an episode of Firefly, but its somewhere in my Netflix que. I think the movie stood up on its own. It was easy to follow, the dialogue was sharp, and the characters were engaging. 7.8/10 The Polar Express: I really didn't enjoy it, watched it to placate the missus. Boring 2 hours or so. 2/10. The 40-year old virgin: Already saw this in the theaters, but watched it again on DVD. Even better the second time. Hi-fucking-larious. 10/10. Sleepers: I hadn't actually seen the movie all the way through. I generally jumped in around the same time and more or less watch most if it. Watched the full thing for the first time the other day. Solid movie. Good story, decent acting, nothing spectacular though. It was compelling, and I can see why people has Brad Renfro marked as a future star.. that didn't really work out, did it. 6.6/10. |

Tonight I watched two movies.
One in theatre - Hostel: Got what I expected, drom the director that did Cabin Fever. This was a fucked up gory flick. Lots of nudity. Decent amount of humor. 6.5/10 One at home - Man on Fire: Compelling plot. Good movie. 7/10 |

I rented the documentary " Grizzly Man " this afternoon. This was put together by Werner Herzog.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427312/ Timothy Treadwell lived with Grizzly Bears in Alaska during the summer for 13 years. He never took a weapon. In his 13th summer, he and his girlfriend were killed by a grizzly bear the last day of the 2003 expedition. He believed he was protecting the bears from poachers, and other human interactions that would harm the bears. There is much debate as to whether what he was doing was more harmful then good, such as making the bears familiar with humans and therefore making them an easier target for poachers. I do not know how I feel about whether what he did was right or wrong, but I do know that this documentary is amazing. Treadwell had a camera with him for what I believe was the last five expeditions into Alaska. His footage is absolutely amazing. Some of the scenes left me in awe. Treadwell at times came across as an amazingly compassionate man, a very funny man, and very intelligent, but at times he also came across as almost crazy. Some of the things he would do made me think of his mental state. One such instance is where one of the bears he named " Wendy " took a dump and ran over and touched it and he was in pure ecstacy over the fact that this crap just came out of Wendy. Then there are times where I feel such admiration for this man, because for 13 seasons he lived in perhaps one of the most dangerous areas of Alaska, where any normal person would probably die on their first camping trip. To watch him touch a wild grizzly bear and speak to it like a fellow human was amazing. He was also extremely close to the foxes that lived in the area. They were like his pets. Treadwell actually had the camera rolling when they were attacked, but they did not have the lens cover off. All they got was audio. This audio I believe has never been made public. Timothy's best friend, and one time lover, had the tape and she never even listened to it. There is one scene where Werner is listening to the audio with headphones while Timothy's best friends holds the camcorder the tape is in. Werner's back is to you, and at times he would describe what he was hearing. The lady obviously got emotional, and eventually Werner asked her to turn off the tape and he took his headphones off. He tells her that she must not ever listen to that, and that she should probably destroy the tape. That scene alone I think did more, I feel, then if they actually played the tape in the documentary. It was a very powerful scene. I could go on and on about other such scenes. I HIGHLY recommend viewing this. 10/10. Last edited by Scoobz0202 : 01-23-2006 at 04:38 PM. |

Saw "4 Brothers" recently.
2/10. Wow, what a bad plot. Grandma gets killed so 4 adopted brothers decide to shoot up half of Detroit. Of course the cops don't seem to even take notice. Wait, one cares but he's crooked anyways (hey, it's Detroit), and he's easily removed by one of the wold's dumbest cons. Bah, I was expecting a better movie from Marky Mark. |

The first hour was horrible. I know what he was trying to do with the cheezy dialogue and slow pace, but it totally didn't work. Once we meet Kong, things picked up and I really liked the scenes with Kong in NYC, but overall, it was only okay. |

Flightplan: pretty good I thought. I had fairly low expectations for this 7/10. Red Eye: I enjoyed it but it was a little hacky for me. And the villian was like a super wimp. 6/10 instead of 5 because I likey Rachel McAdams.

Red Eye: Rachel McAdams is gorgeous. A solid movie. Edge of your seat kind of thing. I like that they spent so much time setting up the characters before getting into the real meat of the movie. 7.3/10.
Grizzly Man: Herzog's narration: 10/10. The rest of it: 4/10. Probably about a 6/10 in my book. Man that guy was fucking crazy. |

Last two I saw
Grizzly Man: As mentioned above, I'll give it an 8/10 or so I think. I actually rate Treadwell's parts higher than Herzog's. Herzog's "documentary" portion was very sporadic, it went all over the place. There was some beautiful footage on there though. Very interesting movie though, what an odd character. Herzog did have some good stuff in his narration, but the actual cut and documentary portion of it was very jumbled I thought. Today I got a chance to see Capote, which I'll rate ohh..lets say an 8.9 or so. I think Hoffman will win the Oscar this year, and it was a really interesting movie. I read In Cold Blood years ago, and really liked it, but I knew almost nothing about Capote. Good stuff. I'm trying to run through all the "big" good movies of this year, so Good Night, Good Luck is up next and I'll probably try and see Brokeback after that. |

Anyone see that Paul Clinton died over the weekend? I don't watch many movies, but did recognize his name as one of the movie reviewers on CNN.com. He was in his 50s.
