Week 10 Stony Brook- 63, Missouri- 54 Fairfield- 57, VMI- 50 UTPA- 63, San Diego- 61 Final Group 53 standings: #1- Missouri 8-2 (+105) #2- Stony Brook 5-5 (-46) #3- San Diego 5-5 (+10) #4- Fairfield 5-5 (+21) #5- UTPA 4-6 (-56) #6- VMI 3-7 (-34) Missouri wins the group, easily, and has one of the better point differentials of 8-2 group winners. A top 30 seed should be good for them. The runner-up spot was a 3 way tie. First tiebreaker (as you know) is head to head amongst the other teams. Stony Brook went 3-1 against San Diego and Fairfield, San Diego went 2-2 against Stony Brook and Fairfield, and Fairfield went 1-3 against Stony Brook and San Diego. So Fairfield, even though they had the best point differential of the 3 teams, drops to 4th place in the group. Stony Brook swept San Diego in their 2 meetings so, Stony Brook gets the second spot in Group 53. With that awful point differential, they'll almost certainly be the last seed for group runner-ups, which would be seed #116. San Diego as mentioned before, gets third place, but not nearly enough to qualify for a wildcard spot. This means that Vermont gets to hang around to see another group. It also means that Green Bay has clinched a wildcard berth. Here are the updated wildcard standings: N.C. Central 7-3 (+63) CLINCHED Jacksonville St. 7-3 (+55) CLINCHED E. Vermont has to be sweating as the Cincinnati-Kentucky game will determine whether they stay in the wildcard hunt or not. |

Week 10 Kentucky- 79, Cincinnati- 75 Utah Valley- 64, Utah- 58 Gardner Webb- 66, Monmouth- 41 Final Group 54 standings: #1- Utah 7-3 (+39) #2- Kentucky 7-3 (+36) #3- Cincinnati 6-4 (+53) #4- Gardner-Webb 5-5 (+37) #5- Utah Valley 3-7 (-26) #6- Monmouth 2-8 (-139) Utah wins the group on a tiebreaker. Utah and Kentucky split their meetings, so we go to point differential. Utah wins the group by 3 measly points. However, 7-3 is the worst record for group winners, and Utah has the lowest point differential of those 7-3 group winners, so if my math serves me correctly, this would put Utah as the lowest seed of the group winners, seed #58. Kentucky gets second place, and should figure in the middle of the group runner-ups. Cincinnati takes third, and has enough of a point differential to get into the wildcard chase. Unfortunately, this does eliminate Vermont. Had Cincinnati beaten Kentucky in Week 10, then Kentucky would have been 6-4 and their point differential wouldn't have been high enough to advance. As it stands, Cincinnati is in.. Vermont is out. This also does clinch a berth for Texas St., with 4 groups to go. All 7-3 third place teams have already clinched their wildcard spots so far. Here are the updated wildcard standings: N.C. Central 7-3 (+63) CLINCHED Jacksonville St. 7-3 (+55) CLINCHED E. They must survive 4 more groups, and the trend of third place teams getting a wildcard berth has been pretty darn good the last few groups. Fingers crossed! |

If they don't make it at all, it would mirror the real season: pretty good but not quite there yet.

Florida 1-8 (-52) Week 10 Schedule: Valpo @ Maryland St. Peters @ S. Florida San Francisco @ Liberty No matter what, the winner of the Valpo-Maryland games wins the group. If Maryland wins, they would win the group outright, if Valpo wins, it would be a tiebreaker, but it would also mean that Valpo swept Maryland, which would give them the tiebreaker. San Francisco must win to even have a chance at a wildcard. The St. Peters game doesn't matter, because even if St. Peters does slide up to third place, they wouldn't qualify for a wildcard. |

Week 10 Maryland- 71, Valpo- 70 (OT) S. Florida- 71, St. Peters- 58 Liberty- 64, San Francisco- 62 Final Group 55 standings: #1- Maryland 9-1 (+91) #2- Valpo 7-3 (+47) #3- San Francisco 5-5 (+5) #4- St. Peters 4-6 (-45) #5- Liberty 3-7 (-59) #6- S. Florida 2-8 (-39) Maryland wins the group and will be a lower seed as far as 9-1 group winners go. Should still be a top 30 seed. Valpo loses 3 out of their last 5 and drops to second place. There is at least 1 other group runner-up that has a 7-3 (+47) mark, so Valpo will have to deal with some tiebreakers once group play is finished. San Francisco was sitting good at 5-2 after week 7, but lost their last 3, knocking them out of the wildcard hunt. LSU is happy about this, as they survive 1 group, but they still have 3 more groups to survive. Iona celebrates, as they have clinched a wildcard berth thanks to the results of this group. Not that any team wants to be on the chopping block, but LSU is hoping that they remain on the chopping block for the rest of group play. If they are on the chopping block, that means they are still in the round of 128. But they still have 3 groups to sweat through. (Sorry StLee, I'm sure I am agonizing you right now. lol) On the flip side, Cincinnati becomes the next team with a chance to clinch a wildcard berth. |

Virginia @ Montana St. It's pretty simple, the Colorado-BYU winner wins the group. After that it gets a bit more complicated. The Colorado-BYU loser will still make the round of 128 with a 7-3 record, but.... if W. Virginia wins their game, they'll be in a second place tiebreaker with the Colorado-BYU loser. As for W. Virginia, if they win, they are in. If they lose, they must lose by only 1 or 2 points to still be in the wildcard chase. A 3+ point loss by W. Virginia eliminates them from further competition. Confused yet? That's the wildcard for ya. |

Week 10 Colorado- 61, BYU- 59 Penn- 63, Savannah St.- 54 W. Virginia- 75, Montana St.- 59 Final Group 56 standings: #1- Colorado 8-2 (+58) #2- BYU 7-3 (+76) #3- W. Virginia 7-3 (+62) #4- Savannah St. 4-6 (-56) #5- Penn 3-7 (-32) #6- Montana St. 1-9 (-108) Colorado wins the group and should get into the top 30 as far as seeds go. BYU takes second, as they win the point differential tiebreaker with W. Virginia since they split their 2 games.. There are a few teams ahead of them as far as point differential at 7-3, but not many. I look for BYU to get a seed in the low 60s, high 70's. And we have a major shake up in the wildcard standings, for the first time. W. Virginia with their 7-3 record and high point differential, has actually clinched a wildcard berth immediately after playing their group. We've had a few teams that have clinched a wildcard berth 1 group after they played, but none on the same group. This means a few things. 1. Every team that had already clinched a wildcard berth moves down a spot in the wildcard standings (aside from N.C. Central, which still owns the top wildcard spot). 2. This does eliminate LSU officially (tough luck StLee, but I'm sure I'll be doing more projects in the future so you can root them on.) 3. Cincinnati, which was looking to clinch a wildcard berth from the results of this group, does NOT clinch yet, and must wait for at least 1 more group to clinch. Washington 4-6 (-23) ELIMINATED You can see the changes I talked about if you compare these wildcard standings as opposed to the last wildcard standings. Also, I've went back and done some editing on N.C. Central. In one database, I had their point differential at +65, but on the wildcard standings I've been showing you, I had made a typo and had them at +63. So N.C. Central is actually a 7-3 (+65), which is included in the updated standings. Any questions? Feel free to ask. For group 57, it's pretty simple: Drexel is on the chopping block, and for the second straight group, Cincinnati is looking to clinch. |

If they lose, they are eliminated from wildcard contention. |

Week 10 Oklahoma- 80, SFA- 70 GW- 60, E. Tenn. St.- 50 Wake Forest- 78, UNO- 61 Final Group 57 standings: #1- Oklahoma 8-2 (+56) #2- Stephen F. St. 2-8 (-96) #6- Nebraska-Omaha 2-8 (-123) Oklahoma wins the group, and doesn't have as good of a point differential as some 8-2 group winners. Stephen F. Austin has a decent point differential, but they will be in a tiebreaker with at least 1 team when it comes to determining seeds. George Washington takes third, and gets into the wildcard chase, edging out Drexel by 1 measly point. Sadly, we say goodbye to Drexel, and we welcome Cincinnati into the round of 128, as they clinch a wildcard berth. Here are the updated group standings: N.C. Central 7-3 (+65) CLINCHED W. This group will be a little different, with only 5 teams. Weeks 1-10 will have just 2 games a week, and those will be all the home and away match-ups. After Week 10 every team will have played 8 games. Weeks 11-12 will be neutral site games and will have 2 games a week. Week 13 will be a single neutral site game. Here are the teams: Montana (Big Sky, 25-7, 19-1) Davidson (Southern, 26-8, 17-1) Northwestern (Big 10, 13-19, 4-14) Hartford (America East, 17-14, 10-6) Miami (OH) (MAC, 9-22, 3-13) ----------------------------------------------- Week 1 Montana- 63, Hartford- 60 Davidson- 75, Northwestern- 55 Week 2 Montana- 77, Northwestern- 57 Miami (OH)- 61, Hartford- 48 Week 3 Northwestern- 68, Miami (OH)- 58 Davidson- 84, Montana- 74 Week 4 Davidson- 73, Miami (OH)- 57 Hartford- 68, Northwestern- 62 Week 5 Davidson- 81, Hartford- 63 Montana- 66, Miami (OH)- 57 Here are the standings after Week 5: Davidson 4-0 (+64) Montana 3-1 (+22) Miami (OH) 1-3 (-22) Hartford 1-3 (-28) Northwestern 1-3 (-36) |

If Davidson loses, then it'll be a tiebreaker situation. No since talking about the third place team, because none of them are even realistically close to a wildcard. Group play is done, now it is just a matter of finalilzing the seedings, hopefully I can work on that a bit later, but need a break right now. If I don't have the seedings and first round pairings announced tonight, I should have it tomorrow for sure.

Round of 128 Seeding
It is time to figure out the seeds for the round of 128 Group winners seeded 1-58 Group runner-ups seeded 59-116 Wildcard teams seeded 117-128 I have went through and looked, and while we do have some 2 way ties to figure out, there doesn't seem to be any 3+ team ties. So here is the tiebreaker that will be used for the 2 team ties: 1. Winning % Of Teams Defeated 2. Total Points Scored in Group Stage 3. Coin Toss As there are a lot of ties, I will not go into telling you guys how the tiebreakers figured into a particular seed, unless you guys want me to. I can. I think I counted 10 or 12 2 way ties, give or take. Also, I am not going to adjust the seeds, so teams from the same conference may be playing in the first round, and teams that played in the same group could also be playing in the first round. That's just the way it will be. So let's get started with the seeds! Group Winners 25 teams were ranked to begin this tournament, and if those teams advanced, they will be bolded so that you guys know which teams were ranked. #1- Kansas 10-0 (+199) #2- Ohio St. 10-0 (+171) #3- Syracuse 10-0 (+160) #4- Wichita St. 10-0 (+156) #5- Gonzaga 10-0 (+140) #6- Notre Dame 10-0 (+132) #7- Michigan 10-0 (+124) #8- Southern Miss 10-0 (+115) #9- VCU 10-0 (+106) #10- Duke 10-0 (+104) #11- Oklahoma St. 9-1 (+172) #12- Colorado St. 9-1 (+166) #13- UNLV 9-1 (+163) #14- Oregon St. 9-1 (+152) #15- Indiana 9-1 (+136) #16- Minnesota 9-1 (+134) #17- St. Marys 9-1 (+131) #18- Michigan St. 9-1 (+127) #19- UMass 9-1 (+126) #20- Iowa 9-1 (+126) #21- Pittsburgh 9-1 (+123) #22- Davidson 9-1 (+122) #23- Florida 9-1 (+112) #24- Miami (FL) 9-1 (+107) #25- California 9-1 (+107) #26- N.C. Rock Chalk picks up the #1 seed with last year's team. Clearly the algorithm doesn't take point guard play into account

Round of 128
#128 George Washington vs. #1 Kansas My Prediction Gotta go with Kansas in this one, can't really see the Hawks having too much trouble. Game Result George Washington- 70, Kansas- 66 Guys, I'm absolutely stunned at this result. Kansas was not even tested in group play. This would be the equivalent of a #16 seed beating a #1 in the actual NCAA tournament. GW had an 8 point halftime lead and shot 52% from the field. |

guys, I had planned on using a different format with a little more info for the round of 128 and future rounds, but quite honestly, I would like to get this project done, so the format you saw for the first 2 games will be the format for the rest of the tournament. I know that it isn't flashy or anything, maybe a little too simple and doesn't capture the excitement that a tournament should.. but to be honest, group play burnt me out, and I'm ready to get this done, take a couple months away from Whatifsports, and then come back with something fresh after basketball season! Hope you all understand!
The other reason I am keeping it simple is because, honestly, simple is what works for me, and I wouldn't even know how to spice it up. So I hope you guys are ok with this |

Round of 128
#97 Detroit vs. #32 Texas A&M My Prediction Based on the results of the first 2 games, I'm tempted to go with Detroit.. but I won't. I think Texas A&M gets the higher seeds back on track. Game Result Detroit- 66, Texas A&M- 51 This is becoming quite comical. Could it be possible that the lower seeds will win every single game? Surely not. This one wasn't even close. Detroit led by 19 at halftime and never looked back. |

#96 Washington vs. #33 Wisconsin My Prediction I figure if I pick Washington, then the higher seed Wisconsin will win. So I'm picking Washington. Game Result Wisconsin- 70, Washington- 50 Wisconsin becomes the first higher seed to win, and they did it in convincing fashion. The big difference was on the boards, as Wisconsin outrebounded the Huskies 43-21. |

#80 Mercer vs. #49 Weber St. My Prediction This is an interesting match-up. I'm going with Weber St., but it should be a good game. Game Result Mercer- 66, Weber St.- 62 Weber St. led by 5 with about a minute to go but just couldn't make free throws. Mercer hit a couple threes and before you know it, they walk out the winners. As I've always said, you can separate the good teams from the great teams by one thing: free throw shooting. |

#112 Florida Atlantic vs. #17 St. Marys My Prediction There seems to be a major talent difference between the teams. I've gotta go with St. Marys. Game Result St. Mary's- 73, Florida Atlantic- 65 This one was a lot closer than I expected. 21 points from Stefan Moody kept Fla Atlantic in the game, but they had no answer for St. Marys' Matthew Dellavedova, who had a game high 23 points. |

#81 Valparaiso vs. #48 Oklahoma My Prediction This one is really tough. Valpo has a history of being a Cinderella team at the NCAA tournament, and Oklahoma has been pretty inconsistent over the past few years. I'm going out on a limb (which I like to do) and picking Valpo. Game Result Oklahoma- 86, Valparaiso- 52 Boy did I look stupid with that prediction or what? Oklahoma led by as many as 29 in the first half, and shot over 60% from the floor. Very tough to beat teams that are shooting like that. |

And, like that, Kansas is done. Sigh

#121 Toledo vs. #8 Southern Miss My Prediction Hard to go against Southern Miss in this one. They just have a stronger team all around. Game Result Southern Miss- 66, Toledo- 46 Southern Miss led by 16 at halftime, and Toledo never could get it below single digits in the second half. |

#72 Florida Gulf Coast vs. #57 Fresno St. My Prediction FGCU were the darlings of the 2013 NCAA Tournament, and I feel like they can win this game as a lower seed. Game Result Fresno St.- 68, Florida Gulf Coast- 66 (OT) FGCU got a tip-in from Bernard Thompson to send the game to OT, but they couldn't get it done, as a last second heave fell well short, and Fresno St. gets the big win. |

#104 Ball St. vs. #25 California My Prediction Cal all the way. Ball St. may keep it close though. Game Result Ball St.- 69, California- 67 (OT) Another upset early in the tournament, as Cal came back from an 8 point deficit with 3 minutes to go. Justin Cobbs had a chance to complete the comeback but missed a buzzer beater in regulation. |

#89 Robert Morris vs. #40 Boise St. My Prediction This is a tough, tough game. We know Robert Morris upset Kentucky in the 2013 NIT, but I think Boise St. will take care of business here. Game Result Robert Morris- 74, Boise St.- 49 Wow! Didn't see this coming. Robert Morris led by 17 at halftime and never looked back, shooting 51.8% from the field. |

#120 Eastern Michigan vs. #9 VCU My Prediction E. Michigan had a nice run in group play, but I think their luck is about to run out. They can't match up with VCU's havoc defense. Game Result VCU- 73, Eastern Michigan- 57 VCU forced 17 turnovers and got a nice all about effort from Darius Theus (14 points, 4 rebounds, 8 assists.) |

#73 BYU vs. #56 Purdue My Prediction I like BYU to win this one as the lower seed. Game Result Purdue- 62, BYU- 56 Tyler Haws scored 30 for BYU, but it wasn't enough as they couldn't get a key bucket down the stretch. |

#105 Tennessee vs. #24 Miami (FL) My Prediction Tough one to call. Although Tennessee is a much lower seed, I've always liked Cuonzo Martin as a coach. However, Miami has a pretty good coach too in Frank Haith. I think I'll go with Miami, but I could see this one going either way. Game Result Miami (FL)- 65, Tennessee- 60 This was an outstanding game, neither team led by more than 7 points the entire game. Shane Larkin was the difference for Miami, as he had 17 points, including a big three pointer late. |

#88 Illinois-Chicago vs. #41 Coastal Carolina My Prediction I can honestly say I'm not too familiar with either of these teams so I'm just gonna go with the higher seed and say Coastal Carolina. Game Result Illinois-Chicago- 70, Coastal Carolina- 58 This game was won in the first half as UIC jumped to a 19 point lead and led by 14 at halftime. |

#125 Texas St. vs. #4 Wichita St. My Prediction Of course being a Wichita native, I'm biased. But I would like Wichita St. in this game no matter what. Game Result Wichita St.- 72, Texas St.- 56 Cleanthony Early led the way with a nice double-double: 17 points, 11 boards. |

#68 Ohio vs. #61 Cal St. Northridge My Prediction Good mid-major matchup here. I like Ohio though. Game Result Ohio- 91, Cal St. Northridge- 87 (OT) D.J. Cooper had 23 and Reggie Keely had 21 to lead Ohio to a big OT win. |

#100 Louisiana Tech vs. #29 Memphis My Prediction Hard to go against Memphis here, they are a well coached team. Game Result Memphis- 69, LA Tech- 49 Memphis held LA Tech to just 29.8% shooting for the game, and a dismal 16.7% shooting in the second half. |

#93 Kansas St. vs. #36 Missouri My Prediction Obviously I'd like Kansas St. to win, but in reality they were quite inconsistent in the 2012-2013 season. I'm going with Missouri by single digits. Game Result Missouri- 86, Kansas St.- 75 (OT) An amazing finish in regulation. With 5 seconds left, Missouri's Jabari Brown hit a three to tie the game at 68. With 1 second left, Kansas St.'s Shane Southwell gave the Wildcats a three point lead with a trifecta. But Kansas St. forgot to play defense and gave up the home run ball as Brown just beat the buzzer for Mizzou, hitting his second trey in 5 seconds. The Cats couldn't recover and were dominated in the extra period. |

#116 Stony Brook vs. #13 UNLV My Prediction Short and sweet, UNLV in a rout. Game Result UNLV- 59, Stony Brook- 56 Stony Brook led by 5 at halftime but UNLV tightened up the defense late, not allowing a basket in the final 80 seconds to hold on to a game that was much closer than expected. |

#77 Murray St. vs. #52 Richmond My Prediction Tough one to call here. Murray St may be the lower seed but they are still a very good team that sometimes makes noise in March, so I'm going with them. Game Result Murray St.- 82, Richmond- 72 Isaiah Canaan led Murray St. to the victory with 20 points, 5 boards, and 6 assists. |

#109 Charleston vs. #20 Iowa My Prediction I think it'll be a lot closer game than the seedings show, but I like Iowa. Game Result Charleston- 69, Iowa- 62 Despite turning the ball over 18 times, Charleston found a way to win this game. Free throws were the difference. Charleston shot 71% from the line, Iowa shot 55% from the line. |

#84 Tulane vs. #45 Morehead St. My Prediction As this is another matchup where I don't know much about either team, I'm gonna go with Morehead St. Game Result Tulane- 74, Morehead St.- 66 Morehead St. had no answer for Tulane's Jordan Callahan, who had 26 points, including 5 three pointers. |
