Pick Pos NAME Grd/Adj 40 Sol BP Agi BJ PDrl Dev Init Rtg Comments CmpChg
1(22) DT Grady Murray 5.4/5.8 +

+ + xxx 28% 23/55 He was easily the best remaining option at DT. Not excited that he's not well-developed, but he'll do. -13/-30
2(24) S Kirk Bishop 4.4/4.1 ! +
-
+ 27% 27/56 Void or near-void in run defense, but he's a free safety, so I'm hoping that's ok. +5/-2
3(23) RB Dale Ramsey 4.9/5.2

! +

34% 26/35 BPA by my Analyzer weights, and at a position where I could stand to improve. +6/+8
4(22) T Zach Barrett 4.6/5.1 +

+
xxx 41% 17/23 Solid combines. I'm hoping those bars jump up. +3/+5
5(24) QB Carl Mobley 4.0/4.6

40% 12/40 I need a backup QB, and Mobley's development, decent bars, and decent combines give him a shot. +3/-3
6(23) TE Rufus Howard 4.6/4.0

+ +
- 28% 23/54 Looks like he could be a decent blocker, if nothing else. +2/-3
7(22) OLB T.J. Klekamp 4.1/3.9

33% 10/26 Depth pick. Doubt he pans out. +3/+1
UNDRAFTED FA PICKUP: QB Arnie Yancey (15/29-->18/31)
Ouch. 1st-round pick Murray gets hit by the VSoD, really hurting this draft.

OTHER CAMP NEWS OF NOTE
  • Ancient FB Maurice Fairly put up a big +9/+9 in camp.
  • SS Barginski was +10/+10

We look decent at most positions. The only real standout group are the corners. If rookie RB Dale Ramsey can perform well before what looks to be a solid offensive line, and rookie FS Kirk Bishop can hold things down back there, we should improve.

For the first time since putting these house rules in, I feel like we took a small step forward, and could take another next year. Looking at our players' contract status situations, I will be able to franchise the one FA-to-be I really want to keep if he doesn't retire.

2057 OFFSEASON BEGIN

RETIREMENTS

C Bo Stanton--Bo was drafted by as at 2(30) in 2046 as a 29/64 player. He started 6 games that year, and was the full-time starter for the next 10, only missing two starts in those 160 games. His ratings climbed as high as 75/75, and he collected 3 rings. He was a two-time All Pro, and finished his career 2nd in ATL KRB, 3rd in pancakes, and 5th in games started. He does have a capable and creeping replacement in Leland Shepard ready to step in.

FRANCHISE: MLB Trent Bailey
SUMMER: QB Arnie Yancey (undrafted FA)

MLB Trent Bailey--Ouch. Past injustices message, I'm guessing from the holdout. I can't afford him at the franchise price, so he's gone.
RB Jerry Brooks--1st round pick from 2 years ago who just hasn't panned out.

2057 DRAFT/TRAINING CAMP

POSITION NEED ASSESSMENT
QB: OK
RB: Need backup.
FB: OK
TE: Could improve
WR: Could use youngster
C: OK.
G: OK
T: Could use future starter
DE: Only two under contract. Need DE3
DT: Play by ear*
ILB: Play by ear*
OLB: Need backup
CB: Could use youngster
S: OK

*--Right now we have one decent DT, and three decent LBs. I'll pay close attention to what positions are available in this year's draft. It might make sense to switch to the 3-4.

We need someone to step in and start at either DT or ILB.

Pick Pos NAME Grd/Adj 40 Sol BP Agi BJ PDrl Dev Init Rtg Comments CmpChg
1(23) ILB Korey Haskins 5.9/5.7 ! +
+

51% 45/57 Solid development there. We're switching to 3-4. +5/+0
2(22) CB Zack Daniels 5.2/5.4

! -
48% 19/28 Crazy agility (6.78) and some tell-tale bars. He's gonna creep, and creep a lot. +5/+8
3(23) WR Jon Doreski 4.7/4.9 + ! + + -
20% 13/22 Strong combine performance and plays a position where I could use youth. +2/+2
4(22) DE Cornelius Karney 4.7/5.2

+
xxx 43% 19/35 I don't expect him to creep much, if at all, but I needed a backup, and he has solid development. +4/+1
5(23) QB Matt Walters 4.9/5.6

! 31% 14/40 Schultz is in his 9th season, and that Position Drill raised an eyebrow. +3/-1
6(22) ILB Thomas Goguen 4.5/4.4 +

26% 17/41 With the 3-4 switch, I need another decent ILB. +3/+1
7(23) FB-->TE Steven Wright 4.8/3.9

+ + +
19% 19/33-->15/31 I've needed a good TE for a while, and Wright looks like he can convert. Worth a shot here. +2/+4

UNDRAFTED FA PICKUP:
CB Bo Ames (21/46-->25/47)

Draft looking pretty solid. Haskins looks like he'll be huge.

OTHER CAMP NEWS OF NOTE
  • P Benjamin Swift dropped -14/-14 to 46/46.

Dominant performance from Schulz and Hill. Hill got hurt in the first playoff game, and we lost to the eventual champs. The fun news is this: I don't think we can keep this team together for even one more season. We will start next season roughly 5% over the cap. Losing 10% of the cap with the few renegs I have is going to be costly in terms of a talented player or two.

2058 OFFSEASON BEGIN

RETIREMENTS

None.

FRANCHISE: CB Kyle Barker. I'm pretty certain I won't keep the number of solid corners I've had, but franchising Barker gives me flexibility.
SUMMER: CB Bo Ames (undrafted FA)

Just start playing with it financially. This is going to be tough. It won't be Empty Cupboard, but it does look like multiple contributors are gonna have to go.

To give you an idea of where things stand, we begin FA1 $89.88M away from where we need to be. If we just plain released our top three guys, we could free up that much...

...but then we'd only have 28 players under contract.

...and the five RFAs I would like to re-sign will cost $18.66M. Minsal is $1.29M. Best-case scenario is freeing up roughly $60M via my three renegs and three cap outs.

Time to get busy.

Given that this is going to be a major dismantling, I'm going to look at this position by position.

OVERALL THOUGHTS
Adding in the undrafted rookies that I'll need to stay legal, and accounting for renegotiations and cap outs, it appears that I need to ditch around $125M in salary to make this happen. I do think that can be done while still remaining competitive. Specifically, if I keep Schultz and two good receivers, I don't think we're a 6-10 team or anything like that.

QUARTERBACK
As mentioned, gotta keep Schultz. He renegotiates, saving me roughly $13.5M

RUNNING BACK
Dale Ramsey is now in his third year, and is 26/35-->51/51. He's not terribly expensive. He sticks.

FULLBACK
RFA Gino Rivers is included in the budget of signees. He'll cost $5.26M this year. I'll wait to do the signing until I'm 100% sure I can afford it, but the plan is to keep him.

TIGHT END
Young, cheap Steven Wright is the future here. Third-year man Rufus Howard is cheap enough to stay in all likelihood.

WIDE RECEIVER
Tito Zimmerman (50/50) is in his 9th year and has never been a big-time producer. (He has been a solid one for a 7th-rounder, though.) He only caught 29 balls for 351 yards and 7.63 ypt last year. He gets released, saving us $12.05M.
Jeremy Hill (57/57) was a 1st Team All Pro last year, and has a career 9.98 ypt. Capping him out saves us around $9M.
Troy Lane (53/53) is a former undrafted FA who is now starting, and only in his fifth season. He's very likely to stay, and is a potential reneg/cap out. He would save us roughly $6M either way.

OFFENSIVE LINE
We're inexpensive at center at guard. Tackle is another story. What I want to do at tackle is extend Richie Orta (70/70, yr7), which would save us $8M this year, and release 10th-year man Edgar Cortez (52/52), saving $11.9M. I may need to release Orta, though, which would save me almost $29M.

DEFENSIVE LINE
DE Ron Rivera (61/61) is in year 10, has the biggest cap hit on the team, and only had 6.5 sacks last year. I release him, saving over $22M.

LINEBACKERS
I could save $10M-$12M by releasing either OLB. It may need to happen.

SECONDARY
No way I can afford to keep franchisee Barker for the price he wants for renegotiation. He's released.

So after that round, I'm estimating that I need to free up approximately $33M more. *sigh*

Looking over everything, I release T Orta.

Hey, I'm wondering what happened here. Did you ever finish this season? Did the house rules you developed stick you into a tight spot enough so you actually had to 'make a push' for a title and 'enter rebuilding' as real NFL teams go?
