I remembered thinking he was decent a few years ago, too. But then I looked at his numbers and, despite the 3.40 ERA, he had like a 1.4 WHIP that season. Low ERA probably just an abberation of having such a large sample size (aka like 8 or 9 seasons) of sucking.

Oh well. I'd rather his innings going to someone who may have a future with the team, but it isn't like there are a ton of in-house options, I guess.

His reliever splits in '09 were pretty good:

2-2, 2.52 ERA, 9.4 K/9 in 50 IP out of the pen

vs.

1-1, 7.29 ERA, 5.7 K/9 in 33.1 IP as a starter

Obviously sample size comes into play, too. That said I agree that if the Buccos should probably give his innings to someone else. Yes, Steven Jackson has been atrocious this year but he was pretty good last year. If I were Neal Huntington, I'd keep trying young guys.

Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.

Chipper out for the year. And that's probably it for his career.

Sometimes I really hate sports.

17 years, all with one team. I don't know much about Chipper, but that much I love.

Plus, as Giants fans, my wife chuckles every time they mention his name when we're playing the Braves. She also gets a kick out of...

Marco Scutaro
Matt Diaz (pronounced die-azz for some reason)
Jarrod Saltalamachia
Jair Jugjenns
Kevin Kouzmanoff
Coco Crisp
Dan Uggla

...there are a few others I can't remember...

No name has ever been better than hearing the PA guy in Montreal announce John Boccabella.

Yep, but creative to boot. From Wiki When his career blossomed as a "super-sub" (frequent substitute) on the expansion Expos, public address announcer Claude Mouton would call attention to his name, at each at-bat, by enunciating each syllable with a florid style: "John... Boc-ca-BEL-la".

My dad always described it as sounding like the Friday Night Frights host (y'know, the fake vampire in the coffin doing bits between segments of Creature from the Black Lagoon) had taken over the PA duties.

Agreed.

I dunno - no 2 gets you Gerritt Cole or Matt Purke or Sonny Jorgensen, all considered no 1 types - its really the greatest draft since 05 in many eyes.

Dear Pirates,
remember all those years ago when I went to that shithole known as Three Rivers to watch you "play", and when I did it again the next 3 years? Please repay me by winning today against the Padres. Thx

I think Crap knows that, Bug. He was just responding jokingly to your sarcastic/pseudo-naive post that Cole would stay past next season.

It never gets old watching Broxton blow a save against the Phils. At least for Dodgers fans it won't be happening in the playoffs.

Stupid Dodgers can't even win when we need it.

Way I see it, the NL is a blast this year - there are 4 playoff spots, and 6 teams really competing for them - Giants, Padres, Phillies, Braves, Reds, and Cardinals. IMO, the Reds and Cardinals have to be favored to some extent in getting to play the NL Central heavyweights (unbalanced schedule retardedness again), so today, I'd expect to see the Wild Card come from there. Gun to my head, teams that make the playoffs:

NL East: Phillies
NL Central: Cards, Reds
NL West: Giants (a little homerism perhaps).

Either way, should be a barn burner.

I am pulling for the Giants now that Pat Burrell is on the team and producing. If the Phils don't make the playoffs, or get ousted early...I hope he and the Giants make the World Series.

Speaking of Pat Burrell...up until this past series against the Dodgers, I thought that Burrell was the slowest runner I have ever seen. That is until I saw Mike Sweeney run the bases. He barely got home from second when the ball was hit to the warning track.

I'm screaming at the TV for him to run...having horrible flashbacks of Burrell running the bases when I realized...they both wear/wore the #5 in a Phillies uniform. Must be the uniform number.

Someone please, please tell me that Guillen isn't as bad as he seems. Please? I can't imagine Sabean will do anything other than play him as often as possible, and I really don't think he's a better hitter than ANYONE on the Giants.

I really doubt anyone is going to look back at this trade and say "Oh, man! We would have been ok, if not for that Jose Guillen trade!" It's really no big deal.

I like the trade. We gave up nothing and are on the hook for very little. The bench got deeper and we get another right handed bat which is better suited for AT&T.
