I have only seen Messi in games at this World Cup; maybe a few other times that I can't remember at the moment, but he seems like one of the more likeable players out there.

I have seen many times where he seems to be more concerned with trying to keep the play going than diving to try to get a call. In a sport where it seems that it is almost a requirement to fall to the ground when someone even looks your direction that is very refreshing to watch.

So that GK who punched a nasty strike with a ton of zest, when there was guy attacking and way up in the air, if he has puned that ball hard at the attacker and injured him - legal?

As I understand the rules, yes. Same as if you kick the ball as hard as you can directly at the wall on a free kick.

I guess Germany used up all of the quarterfinal goal allotment yesterday.

Di Michelis looks a much better defender now he's got rid of that terrible haircut. Wonder if the look was part of the hapless impression earlier in the season?

And also if David Luiz had a non-idiotic haircut, would he get the same level of criticism?

There's the reason why refs need to improve in conjunction with players not diving. Robben stays on his feet after being checked, but doesn't get the foul. If he goes down, who knows? But it should have been given

Germans have to be loving this. Whichever team they face, they'll have a massive edge in fitness. Extra day of rest + easier match vs. shorter rest + extra time.

The Dutch were really unlucky to not get any goals in the 240 minutes of game play in the Costa Rica and Argentina matches

Not really. We exceeded expectations in both tournaments. The intentions are there, but the extra man behind the ball was necessary to stand a chance in today's 7 1/2 men behind the ball football.

I'm wondering something about betting soccer games -- if you bet for a draw in a knockout game, do you win if the game goes to extra time or only if it goes to penalties?

Boooring. There should be a rule that a 0-0 tie with less than five shots on goal results in the teams from the previous round coming back to play for the spot.

Just horrendous negative eight or nine men behind the ball for the whole game. Guess we all should have seen that coming after yesterday.

Have been wondering to the betting folk--- What are some of the best sites to bet on sports online? I know the legality of which is a grey area but somewhere which allows deposits from the US, easy withdrawals, has strong financial footing and legitimacy and good user base/customer service.

I've tried googling this but seems the only things that ever really come up when you type in "best betting sites for US" are questionable sites that have URLS like "free-easy-sports-betting-online.eu" and so forth..

The guy that bet on Suarez biting someone or threw $20 to a German 7-1 win and returned 48k kind of makes me want to throw $10 into an unlikely happening just for kicks. I realize sports betting is a problem for some people but for me, it gives some of the games that little bit of meaning and I tend to see it as money spent on entertainment and not as loss/winning of income.

Thanks

Damn cable went out at the start of the second half. Came back on briefly... long enough to see the last 5 PK's and then went back out about a minute after the final kick.... back on now...

At least it came back to let me see the end of the match.

Baseball has had multiple live ball and dead ball eras. Has such a thing existed in soccer with more and less offense throughout history?

Aside from the wholesale introduction of the offside rule, it's complicated, mainly because of all the countries involved and the different style of play in those countries (and leagues, of course).

I'd recommend reading Inverting the Pyramid by Jonathan Wilson for considerably more history on how the game has developed over time.

Good suggestion, but let's say I'm probably not going to read 464 pages in the next week or two. Is there more of an answer or does "it's complicated" pretty much encapsulate it, as you said.

Its a fantastic book and well worth reading, especially with regards to the evolution of rules and tactics (and why each occurs).

With regards to tactics and attack/defense over time, this goes in 'gusts' through generation as do styles generally in soccer ... that is a team finds success with a specific style and then that tends to become 'trendy' and other teams attempt to copy it, then another team finds a way to counter it and it goes out of vogue.

One of the most defensive eras involved the Italian style Catenaccio which ground out 1-0 wins continually.

At present the False-9 is the current trend with the biggest clubs and is proving fairly effective when done right, however I expect it to be 'nerfed' in the next season or two ... its not impossible to defend against, its more how used to playing against it the opposition are.

Germany 3-2. I'm hoping for a great game first and foremost...so that seems like a pretty exciting score for a World Cup final.
